I have just been bought Zacharias on a zombie dragon for my birthday :D My friend who has a HE army has said we should have a 3.5k game and bring my VP lord on zombie dragon vs his prince on star dragon.

Any tips on how to bring that down ive kitted my lord out as follows i wanted to have a one on one duel in the heat of battle my ideas are as follows probably wont work but i like trying funky things:

Avatar Of Death
Red Fury
Infinite Hatred
Nightshroud
Sword Of Kings
Cursed Book
Crown Of The Damned
Mounted on a zombie dragon of course.

Can i use the Cursed book during combat in his turn or only my own?

So if this works he looses ASF and has his initiative reduced to 1 for both the rider and mount, He also gets his WS reduced to 1 for one round, and with the -1 to hit from the zombie dragon that means he hits on 6s with no reroll or am i confused?

Thanks in advance for any replies

try this on for size. as a secondary lord of course. (but dont tell him that till the game starts ;P)

vampire lord
+1 magic level
forbidden lore (beasts)
infinite hatred
frostblade
zombie dragon

have a necromancer behind for vanhels.

you charge in and do all your wishy washy with beasts and vanhels to make sure you stick around and hit harder, then you take a beating and slaughter in return. a single wound gets through (which is pretty darn likely to happen) then the dragon dies. your dragon then focuses all its attacks on the (now no longer a) rider to tear him to shreds.

I think ill try them both although frostblade is tricky incase he has vauls unmaking the whole plan falls apart very easily. If the lord is wearing nightshroud and someone attacks the dragon do the rules from nightshroud still apply or is that only if they attack the lord directly?

The nightshroud is only vs attacks on the vamp. He'll take out the dragon from under you and you insta-crumble due to combat rez.

His Prince will likely have a 2+ rerollable AS and 4+ ward save (Armour of Caledor + Vambraces of Defense), so doing what you can to negate that will make a difference. Either negate the armour through raw power or deceit.

Decide what you want to kill first, the Prince or dragon, and resign yourself to the fact that his Prince is going to go before your lord. But your lord gets to go before his dragon. I'd suggest Red Fury, Potion of Speed, and Sword of Bloodshed and Trickster's Shard. Coupled with either Van Hel's cast into combat or Infinite Hatred, and you've got 7A (re-rollable) at S8. Anything you can do to boost your WS by 1 or drop his by 1 (Lore of Shadows, Light, Beasts, Metal) will increase your chances immeasurably. You should be able to come close to instagibbing his dragon first turn, as with hex's and buffs you can hit on 2's and wound on 2's, putting the bonus attacks on his lord.

Van Hel's while you are in combat gives your lord and the dragon hatred and ASF.

Killing his dragon first means he gets no Thunderstomp. If you're going for all-out offense with your lord, you can't afford adequate protection against D6 S6 wounds on top of the dragon's normal attacks.

Don't forget about the ZD's "Cloud of Flies" rule. It means both the Prince are hitting your lord on 5's and the dragon on 4's. If you go for "Glittering Scales", he's only hitting your lord on 6's. Even with re-rolls due to Speed of Asuryan, the Prince should hit the zombie dragon 3 times and the star dragon another 3. With average rolling and no strength bonuses, the dragon's 5 wounds should hold out.

Of course, if he's got the Talisman of Saphery, you're screwed.

I've beaten a Star Dragon in a duel before. The key was using IoN every chance I got to bolster my dragon, as well as using VHD if the opportunity presented itself (giving yourself ASF is a great way to negate the Prince's re-rolls). Another thing to keep in mind is the Blood Drinker sword. If your Lord is toting that around, he'll only be doing two or three wounds per combat phase against the high toughness of the Star Dragon. However, every wound he inflicts will heal either himself or his mount. The wounds you put on the Star Dragon, on the other hand, don't seem to heal up quite as easily.

I like to use this set up to kill characters riding monsters.

red fury, inf hatred, deathknight, sword of anti-heroes, pot of str, crown and cad cuirass. If you not worried about KB you can change out the cuirass for the dragon helm and get a 1+ armor save .

With the potion you are getting 5A at S9. With red fury you should get enough wounds to kill the dragon. But like anything in this game the dice gods can be fickle........

Cadaverous Cuirass gives a 2+ armor that can't be improved upon by any means, unfortunately that just means a 5+ AS for when the lord attacks with his great weapon, and a 6+ when the dragon attacks.

I would not be taking a zombie dragon at all, honestly. With a frostblade on a dragon like that, you're just asking for your lord to get himself sniped by the first bolt thrower he sees. I would give him red fury, inf hatred, giant blade, crown of stupid, enchanted shield and dread knight. If you really want it dead, you can give him the strength potion on top of that ogre blade, but that's just starting to get silly!

That would be the flayed hauberk. The cuirass grants immunity to KB.
