How to search for bands/music?

Hey all,

I've been gaining an interest to explore my musical taste a bit more. And I've got my way to find music, although it often proves insufficient.

What I usually do:

- go to the top40 of my country's popular radio station
- search the list for songs I don't know
- listen them on Youtube
- usually listen to other songs 'related' to them in video suggestions list
- continue doing that because when you listen a new song, the list will be renewed

Etc.

Afterwards, I usually look up the band on Wikipedia and find out what albums/singles they produced. If I like the band/artist enough I'm tempted to download the whole discography.

But I wonder if there are better ways to find music. Is there some sort of online database with all, or nearly all, artists/bands listed?

Youtube often shows suggestions from the same band, while I'm trying to discover new ones

I listen to alot of music on Youtube. Then I download the Songs off Youtube using DVDVideoSoft Free Studio's Youtube to MP3 Converter. I like to set the settings for MP3 Quality on the highest setting and my last 4-5 cd's ive burned have been really good quality. I also use that Last.FM website to find music similiar to music I already like or to decide which songs to try from a specific artist.

Spotify is an awesome source of music. Whatever artist you search for you will have a tab called "related artists" and it is remarkably accurate(though sometimes it can get a bit wonky...). There is also the radio function and "what's new".

Found quite a few bands I like there, indeed, I even found music from genres I didn't know I liked or existed.

Pandora Radio.

Pandora.com

Enter a Song you like, an artist you like, album, etc.
And it will make an "Internet Radio" for you based on what kind of music you would like.
You can thumbs down a song to prevent that artist/style from playing often, and obviously thumbs up a song to likely get songs/artists related to those.
It will basically tweak the Radio to your liking.

Bookmarking songs on there for periods of time, then searching for them all at once on Youtube, then proceeding to download them via DvdVideoSoft is a great way to fill up your iTunes/Ipod

I pretty much do the same thing as MV, but I also ask around and look at the recommended bands on these two certain hubs for DC++(P2P). I sometimes recommend some bands as well, but having people on the hubs that have a fairly good idea of what I like makes it easier for recommendations. The problem for me is that I like a lot of black/death metal, some of my friends are into death, but really only the bigger ones. As for black metal I'm pretty much on my own so none of my friends can recommend me any BM. Forums on certain genres of music can also be a big help as everyone there is pretty much listening to what you are or something like it.

@Chunky: Pandora.com only provides it's service for Americans It could have been useful, as far as I can read.

@Boo: I tried last.fm and I wasn't too impressed. I believe it's paid-for too after some time.
