As the title says, I've reasontly found out a few interesting facts about the laws in both Ireland and England. Here they are:
In 2006 Ireland it was illegal to add sheep dung to your coffee
If someone was accused of witchcraft, they could still be put to the stake
If you were caught stealing, you could be thrown into a lake while "tied to a millstone or other heavy weight"
And a law ("Police Act.") passed in 1285, that set up a Corps of Watchmen, with a single task: to arrest "suspicious strangers" -- presumably even English ones.
Sadly these laws have all been ammended, and now we Are allowed to add sheep dung to our coffee..
However, it is still legal to excrete in a public area (even under the watchful eyes of the GardaÃÂÂ, who are ment to carry around blankets to put around a person doing their business in public), while you can be arrested for urinating in front of a Garda (Irish term for a "Copper")
As for the english ones:
It is illegal to die in the Houses of Parliament (because you get a free state funeral)
It could be regarded an act of treason to place a postage stamp bearing the British king or queen's image upside-down
Eating mince pies on Christmas Day is banned (I think this was finally taken down by Cromwell)
In the UK, a pregnant woman can legally relieve herself anywhere she wants
The head of any dead whale found on the British coast automatically becomes the property of the King, and the tail of the Queen
It is illegal not to tell the tax man anything you do not want him to know, but legal not to tell him information you do not mind him knowing
It is illegal to enter the Houses of Parliament wearing a suit of armour
Are there any "interesting" laws where you are then? Do tell me!
Know your Rights, because so many of them are so wrong
