RE: A New Evil Arises

Well, I just always have imagined zombies as everyday people who got infected so why wouldn't they wear a variety of different colors of clothing? I held back a little on the blood with this batch though as I wanted a few "freshly bit" zombies who hadn't had their first meal yet.

As far as the basing goes, I just thought of a large battlefield or town where there would be a variety of different patches of ground from heavy grass to bare dirt. I based them to reflect this variety. I want my zombies to look very ununified and random with no theme of colors or anything to really tie them together.

Wow, never used dipping before and it is great to see some examples. Is the shine an inherent by product from dipping or did you use a gloss varnish?

I know how you feel about not having many players in the area to keep you inspired ! 40k is the big thing around my area as well. At any rate keep motivated and keep painting

RE: A New Evil Arises

the gloss is indeed from the dipping. It's great and sort of annoying at the same time in that it does give a nice hard coating to the mini to protect it but even after spraying a matte finish on it at the end of the process, they still have a little bit of sheen to them. I think pictures accentuate this a little as I don't think they look as shiny in person.

RE: A New Evil Arises

Haven't updated this in awhile. Been distracted from my VC army mostly due to actually wanting to play. I've had a really hard time finding fantasy players around here and have since taken up Warmachine just to be able to play. Picked up PP's 2 player battlebox and have been working on my Protectorate of Menoth force and a couple pieces of terrain for a game table I'm building. I hope to get back to my undead at some point but for now here's a few pics of what I've been working on even if it isn't undead related.

Ahhh! Someone from the Iron Kingdoms, Menoth no less! Great work on your zealots there. I like the color contrasts you've used on them, even thought I hate Menoth ;). I run a Legion army myself. We should play on the online version of it if you want! PM me if you're interested!

All the best,

Jake

Black, red and gold. Classic colour scheme that is bold and imposing. Don't feel bad about not painting just undead, it is good practice to swap to a different medium/style from time to time to stop things from getting too repetitive.

I like your Zombies, how did you paint them?

Sorry about no response to your question. Haven't checked this in awhile. Look back through the posts. Pretty easy and fast really. Just base coated the skin using several different flesh tones, some watered down gray, left some white primer. Then basecoated everything else in various colors. Used blood red and mephiston red for blood and guts. Brushed on Minwax polyshades antique walnut over the entire model, do the bases, sprayed with dullcote, went back over some of the blood with gloss varnish. Done!

RE: A New Evil Arises

Been quite some time since I updated this. It's taken me awhile to finish painting my starter Menoth force. Just haven't had a whole lot of time to paint. But I should be back on here more and posting up some new models. I finally found someone to play fantasy with so I have some fresh motivation to continue work on my undead.

Today I started a skeleton unit filler. It's nothing special or terribly original but I think it will turn out nicely once it's all finished.

Also, here is some pics of my first couple pieces of terrain.

I like how the unit filler turned out. The dirt/grass on top of the heads of the Skeletons is a nice touch!

Workiing on a few pieces right now including an old school necro, spirit host, and this reaper mini to represent my Varghulf. Decided to experiment with JB Weld as a putty for modeling. It's much much cheaper than green stuff and while it's not really for sculpting, JB Weld works great for things like this.

Here it is with the JBW all dry and the entire model primed and ready for paint.

I've never actually been a big fan of that model, but by the look of it so far, it looks like you might do something interesting with it. You may just sway me lol. Are you going to be doing some kind of swamp basing? That's just the image i get from where its at right now lol

RE: A New Evil Arises (updated August 16th 2012)

lol @ gw varghulf. i dunno how i feel about it. i know enough im not gonna buy one. I'm considering maybe forge world skin wolves, just cuz i love the models. they could work as a ghulf. i think most people seem to rather have a wolf type of varghulf than a bat-thing lol
