Today is Anzac day here in australia. Anzac day is a day when we commemorate the australian and new zealand soldiers who gave their lives in various conflicts around the world. The root of anzac day is in the battle of gallipoli, when allied forces, including anzac forces (australia and new zealand armed corps)

So all I ask today, is that you all take a moment to remember those who gave their lives for their countries.

A little late, but first heard about that battle a few weeks ago when I came across a WW 1 documentary on the television.
The first world war wasn't that highly priotized in my schools history lesson. And what was told was about the trench wars, first tanks and west and eastern front. Compared to the second world war, I feel the first one has slipped into the background, just being a prelude to the second war.

No matter what people think of wars, conflicts and governments. Soldiers past, present and future, that have to do the fighting will have my respect, even thou I might disagree with the ruling body that tell them to fight.

This I fully agree with. The leaders who made the decision to go to war may not be right, but the soldiers who go and fight deserve our respect IMO.

Pacifism only works if everyone does it. A powerful nation should not sit by and watch in situations like libya (a country bombing its own civilians with fighter bombers and gunships?)

Unfortunately I believe the caution western governments are showing with the Libya situation is well-founded. This was how our involvement in places like Afghanistan and Iraq begun (I think so, perhaps it was another country, I forget the name) and now there is all sorts of trouble. This is why they're sitting on the fence over the recent crises.

I do give thanks to our ANZAC allies in the World War, Korea, and other conflicts. Especially during WWII, they fought for my freedom as much as my fellow Americans.

A poem I wrote some time ago would be good here, I think...

Glory?

“Death or Glory” was the cry
That went through the minds
Of medieval soldiers at war
“Death or Glory” was the cry
That sent many medieval men
To their deaths
For these brave troops
Glory was not gained but death certainly was
Knights on horse back
Foot soldiers too
All were sent to die
For one man's glory
But is glory glory
When achieved through the deaths of others?
