A swedish vampire movie(!) with intelligence, depth and emotion.

I've yet to see it, but I really enjoyed the book, a dark and moving tale. I know that the film only scratches on some (controversial) things outlined in the book, but I hope it's a good movie anyway.

The sad part is that a Hollywood remake is already planned for 2010, for those that can't be arsed to read english subtitles.

I hadn't heard of this film before, and just read the synopsis on the rottentomatoes website (the link for the imdb is not working for some reason), and I have to say I really like the plot idea behind this movie.

I can see where it may be deemed to be a bit controversial, but I like the dark humour of it. It's a new and unique way of looking at the teenage angst tale as well. If it gets a release over here in the cinemas, I know I will have to go to an independant/arthouse cinema to see it, but it sounds like it would be more than worth it.

Oh, and I agree N.I.B. about it being sad about the Hollywood remake being planned. They will probably end up turning it into some sort of 'the little vampire' hideous thing and completely lose what makes it so interesting and great.

The IMDb link works fine for me, anyone else having problems?

I hope that the remake will also be a unique film, but I have my doubts, I'm anticipating another cash cow streamlined formula 1A Hollywood product. Director will be the one who made Cloverfield.

The synopsis looks half decent, though I would want to read the book first. I find so much is lost in translation from book to film that it can a shame.
NIB - is the book easy to get hold of?

They only have deliver systems for scandinavian countries, but if you drop them an email (down to the right) you might work something out. You could try ebay too, or just wait.

I sometimes prefer to see the film first, to not be disappointed after having read the book (which almost always happen).

According to a friend who has recently both read the book and seen the movie it's supposed to be great, at least the book. So, if you are interested in reading it I can strongly recommend that you do so ;)

Well it's only my own opinion N.I.B. and one without having read the original book (after having seen the movie, is reading the book still worth it do you think?), but I watched the movie earlier tonight, like finished watching it 10 mintues ago, and wow......

Seriously, WOW..... :|

Fantastic movie, absolutely brilliant.. I got to see it after having you mention it, and then checking out the trailer for it, and I mentioned it to my Team leader/manager at work, and he went out and found it and downloaded it (total pirate :P), and his response was it was totally awesome.. this coming from someone that you couldn't say has a Vampire fetish like the rest of us, but one of the 'normal, common' folk.. but he leant it to another team member before I could get ahold of it

But this weekend, it was all mine, and tonight I finally gave it a spin.. and again.. wow.... loved it.. was absolutely brilliant.. as my manager said, it has no special effects or any of that stuff that you are used to seeing with a vampire movie, and that just adds to it completely. The fact that one of the characters is a vampire is almost secondary in alot of ways to the story.. I mean, it's definitely a big part of the story, but it never overtakes it, it just adds to what to me is an incredible tale.. I loved every minute of it.. the dark humour that runs through it was brilliant.

I cringe at the idea of a hollywood remake of this one. I just think so much is going to be lost in the translation of it. Being a westerner, for me part of what I enjoyed so much about this movie was it's europeaness (making up words I know), just the feel of it and just the different culture and all. A remake would lose that, it would lose the edge that for me really makes it. I really fear that they would make it far too PC and friendly to the familys.

Personally I don't think it needs to be remade at all. Any westerners that just cannot appreciate this film in it's current form (let's be honest, the hollywood remake will be aimed at the western market) are not worth the time and effort. This film is brilliant. Easily one of the best films that I have seen in a long while, and I would say not just as a Vampire film, this film just as a film on it's own has made it into my top ten favourites.

Boo: can't comment on the book, but the movie definitely deserves the accolade of 'Brilliant!'

Oh, that's a really great description of the movie! Now I have to see it. And as I'm Swedish and the movie was actually filmed very close to where I live I think it would be cool to recognize the surroundings :)

I would recommend you reading the book. It will be a great read, I promise ;)

Holy threadomancy Batman! :)

Glad you liked it darkness, kind of makes me proud that we can do the occasional great movie in my little country. Having seen the movie I wasn't too disappointed although I wanted more emotions from the actors, they appeared a bit too life-less in some scenes (pun not intended). Understandably some part of the book was cut, and I doubt they figure in the remake.

Speaking of the remake: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1228987/

I'll definately see it, I'm curious to see if Matt Reeves could find another good angle of the story. Looks very true to the first film tho.

Ohh, shiny new avatar, look at you!

Best. Film. Ever. My favourite film since I saw it in the cinema. Its best to consider the film and book separate entities though (as is often the case, such as with Bladerunner for example); though the film leaves quite a bit out, it has its own beauty. Just a shame I can't read Swedish so have to make do with a translated version.

I would rather shoot myself in the face than watch an American remake of this tbh, really pisses me off that they insist on doing that :mad2: Bad enough when they did it to the Ring and the Grudge, but this is just sacrilege.

It's great being an Admin sometimes: threadomancy ahoy!

Recently read this book, and it was bloody great. Very disturbing but well worth the read. Can't wait to see the movie when it comes on Sky.

I watched the movie a few months ago; it was pretty good, better than expected. I wouldn't put it on my top 10 or even 100 list though, but it definitely was worthwhile and recommended to watch.

Yepp, I rather stab myself in the face than watch the remake... Ok, I wouldn't but I am sure as hell not going to waste my time on a movie that lacks the cinematography on the original and having scenes from the original for the sake of having them(Hey, mr Matt Reeves, it helps to have a point to the scenes in a movie).

Don't pay to see remakes, make them lazy bastards give us new movies.

I actually have to say Danceman that the remake 'Let Me In' really surprised me.

I was expecting it to be crap in the way that the american remake of Death At A Funeral is crap ie. americans can take something that is fantastic and turn it into something you never want to watch.

But.

It wasn't.

It was in fact really, really good. Surprisingly so. The two main leads did really well with the roles, and in fact in some places it kept closer to the original book than Let The Right One In does. Though that said, being american they avoided one of the more controversal scenes from the swedish film (they left out the scene where oskar sees eli getting dressed).

It wasn't as good as the original, it never was going to be. But it was really surprising just how well a job they actually did of it. I can honestly say that I can watch both the original, and the remake, and really enjoy them both.

I'd go so far as to say you should give Let Me In a chance. It may just surprise you too.

I saw the original in our local arty cinema place and thought it was awesome, got it on DVD. I liked the subtley, and thought the child actors were perfect (I have a tendancy to either really like or really despise children in films!)

The "new" one looks good, and it got raving reveiws, but i'm not quite sure why a remake was done so soon, and with seemingly little changes? For me with... whats the genre... not really horror, erm, supernaturally type films... i find having it subtitled enchances it, as theres no whiney american voices, or american voices doing the english thing, which just never seems to fit.

darknesseternal; That may very well be but it isn't just that. I am tired of remakes. 'Let the right one in' didn't need a remake. To me remakes represent artistic laziness, where creativity comes to die. It is like we're entering some era of creative decay, all you hear on the radio seem to be remixes and re-imaginings of older songs.

You're bound to "rip-off" someone when making anything these days BUT attaching new names and creating a new story is important. While not a remake, take the Resident Evil movies. They have nothing to do with the movies bar arbitrarily giving actors and monsters the same names as in the video games. They're effectively unrelated movies riding on the name of a successful video game franchise. It could have been something new and exciting on its own right. On their own they wouldn't have to bother justifying the many plot holes and stupid twists. They could probably have been able to take the action even further.

In short, if the movie industry don't care then I won't either.

Hey folks, long time no see. Time for some sweet threadomancy again. Been busy with RL and all that jazz. Haven't touched my vamps since a tournaments 7 months ago, all my Warhammer time has gone into my developing Tyranid army (tomorrow I'm going to my first 40K tournament).

Thanks for the heads up darknesseternal, just finished downloading Let Me In. It looks really good, looking forward to see it.

I'm feeling kind of melancholic tonight, reading this thread, looking at the old familiar nicknames, sipping a whisky and listening to Anna von Hausswolff on youtube (check her out if you're in that mood, Track of Time, I Am Leaving and more). Amazing how time flies. These last 10 years have slipped by so fast, so much has happened around me, and yet I feel I stand still.

Welcome back in to the warmth (cold?) of CN N.I.B! :)

This is indeed a good night to be reminiscing about the past. Life does jazz on, life plays it's tune, but the important question is, do you dance or not?

you see, there are far older and stranger things than you in this world, things you were not meant to know about Darvy.

Hey, I just watched Clash of the Titans (yeah I'm slow with movies) and when he said "Release the Kraken" I was like "ZOMG". And I'm pretty sure the Kraken is better than this thread.

Well... I suppose if somebody had the head of Medusa, then.... erm....
