Finally got around to painting what I have and mainly am at a loss at what to buy next besides grave guard. I have:
30 ghouls
1 vampire
1 necromancer
3 banshees
40 zombies
mortis engine
5 hexwraiths
10 dire wolves
need advice for list, and I'm building to around 2000

Why not have a look at the army list section for 2000 point lists and see what you like?

It always depends on what style of list you want to play, of course.

thanks, just started to do that and it looks like one if not two vargulfs are in most lists. they seem pretty good and they are chead compared to a terrorgheist.

Along with the Grave Guard you mentioned, I would recommend adding Fell Bats in units of 2 and Spirit Hosts in units of 1 or 2. Also, you can never have enough Zombies! :Vampire1: Having another Vampire would be nice too. As said above, you really should try to hammer out a list or you'll end up with way over 2000 points if you are like me, because you'll add everything.

Thanks Soren, Just got to painting some random guys as spirit hosts, but do you have any recomendation for how to make some cheaper bats, they are stupidly expensive!
Thanks

Varghulfs are a must. I would also get some skeletons. They are a decent way to get some core points despite what people say about them. I have had them work well for me in the past.

You need more vampires. One necro is enough but a couple more vamps would do well. I would drop the Mortis Engine though. Maybe invest in some vargheists. Really there isn't anything in our book that is bad if used right.

MORE ZOMBIES!!! Do not buy skellies untill next book/edition they are terrible unless you just want to look at em. They are nice models. Mortis is an amazing model and great support item if a little pricy and full of odd rules. You are seriously laking in chaff. I reccomend fell bats in units of 2, dire woves in units of 5, and the single spirt host(dont buy theirs they look rediculous, any model painted blue or green with a white drybrush looks better). Vamps are great but by no means neccicary. I am not a fan of Grave Guard as they are very inflexible and loose to similarly priced foes. Terrorgeists rock.

In the end make lots of lists, try em out with proxy models (bits of paper cut to unit size works fine if you have understanding opponents) and use what makes you happy. Too much interweb tailoring of lists can leech the fun out. Also most top players don't seem to publish their most successfull lists at all. Alot of what I see online for list making makes me cringe.

the hidden one,

No problem.

Remember that Advanced Search is your friend. I searched "alternative fell bats" and it pulled up a lot of the threads I remember:

From what I remember, 40K gargoyle wings on ghouls look the best. If you go outside of GW, Reaper Minis has quite a few bats and bat-winged beasts (Make sure you know what size they are before you ortder them though.).

And make sure you work up some lists and proxy what you do not have until you know what you like. You can spend a fortune on minis if you buy everything just to try them out.
