Im thinking of trying 2 mortise engines with 26 GG with 2 Banshees and 2 Wraiths.

Now if I understand make way properly if Im in horde formation and charge a smaller unit my heroes will not be in combat but his will allowing me to make way wherever I want but avoiding the magic weapon carried by his heroes and denying attacks from the regular troopers.

This sound correct?

I could be wrong but... To make way, the model physically moves(so will be in base contact, and suffer all benefits and penalties of bieng there)

You are right it does move....into b2b contact but that contact doesnt have to be with the chara with the magic weapon. Can be corner to corner with rank and file for example.

Yes, you can put the ethereal characters on the side at the start of the game, and then when you charge/get charged, you can put them anywhere you want as long as they get to basecontact with an enemy. This way you can design a pattern to block a couple of files from attacking. With 4 ethereals you can effectively block two 20mm files.

Just thought of something though. If opponent is 5x5 for example, then he'll be XXCXX, with C being the character. If you want to block one outer file, you'll need 3 ethereals sort of around him, so the one near the middle will be corner to corner with the opposing character.

I wouldn't be too worried though, if he attacks your wraith, he can take 60 points from you, but it will still be hard for him to gain enough combat res to withstand combat with your horde (presuming you're not using zombies :)) so I wouldn't be too concerned about magic weapons in general.

If you touch a character with 1 cairn wraith, he can attack 1, if you touch a character with 3, he can also attack just one of them. I don't think magic weapons should be your big concern. If he has a 300 point character, and he uses it to put two wounds on a 60 point cairn wraith, that's really not so horrible for us.

Not technically true as he can allocate attacks to more than one ethereal.

Ok sounds like a winner then since I was having monsters, cavalry and 6 wide chaos warriors in mind for this tactic.
