RE: Mousillon army blog

After looking jealously over your pictures several times, you do take the cake. I will only point out a few things since you already seem to know what the heck your doing.

First is the mud on your horses, the closer the barding is to the ground I would make it either a darker color or more heavily placed color. The main reason for this is that they've probably been in the field for a while. Therefore, the older stuff has dried and the newer stuff hasn't because its still wet. If you've ever spent some time doing a field training exercise during a rain you can see what I mean. The further up the pants the mud, the dryer it is.

A fantastic job! You truly are at a level a lot of us aren't. Keep those pics coming.

RE: Mousillon army blog

thanks very much!

I did consider the 'dried' effect with the mud. There is actually two colours there, although it didnt turn out as defined as I wanted with the barding (probably the main bit where I needed it!)

I am working on my first vamp now, and will try the two tone mud effect there. Its terribly stressful, to take a tank brush and just stipple brown over your carefully painted yellow, especially when your not entirely sure how its gonna turnh out!!!

PS: BTW anyone can paint to this standard. Half the work is in the bases; choosing a good complimenting colour and adding some nice touches (flock, leaves etc). the rest is just neat painting. And if you value your sanity dont go for yellow! even with foundation paints it takes me forever to get a solid colour, and the paint has a habit of turning really grainy....

RE: Mousillon army blog

Aye! I agree. I was to start 40k once with the imperial fists. Those dang space marines looked like they had a ton of yellow makeup on. Almost reminded me of a dragqueen. Either way I have to hand it to you for sticking in there.

Keep up the good work.

RE: Mousillon army blog

Great work on the Fell Bats unit.. they look great. Very dynamic poses, great bases, and really nice painting.

Your first character looks really good also. Really nice painting on that one, the yellows, as they were on your standard troops, are amazing. Well worth the effort that you have put into it.

The only criticism that I have about your first character, is this. Is it meant to be a Vampire, or a Wight Lord? There is just nothing about it that screams Vampire, or Undead for that matter. No damage to the weapon, or shield, or the armour or helmet. Nothing about the mount to indicate that it had once been dead, no apparent wound(s) nor decay. Nothing about the model to distinguish it from any Bretonnian Knight. The colours of Mousillon are there, granted, but for someone not familiar with the colours, they would have to look at the rest of the army to realise that it was an Undead army of Vampire Counts. Looking at the character alone, you wouldn't know. Perhaps some weathering/aging to the barding and armour would have helped.

RE: Mousillon army blog

:| Wow this is truly amazing, but as Darknesseternal stated, it doesn't exactly look too vampiric (exept for the sword, though. It reminds me of good old Blood Drinker).
Blood splatter, skulls, weathering etc. It all works well for vamps. And if you "filled" that vial with blood instead of... green liquid...

RE: Mousillon army blog

Superb! Those dire wolves look like they were designed that way - their 'leaping' poses actually look better as flying ones.

The character is very well painted - I would echo darknesseternal's words though - it really is unclear as to what type of character it is - vampire, the colours could still be bright as Blood dragons for example would take care of their amour etc. However if it is meant to be a Wight King, then it needs making dirtier and rustier.

RE: Mousillon army blog

Cheers guys

To answer the main point raised: the character is meant to be a vamp, hence the horse is solid, and the armour etc well maintained. One of the things I wanted with the army was for people to have to 'look twice' and make sure what type of army it is. Hence the characters do look almost undistinguishable from brets except for more chaosy armour and heraldry etc. its only on a second glance when you realise the infantry is infact hordes of skeletons and the knights are quite as chivalrous as you first thought....

RE: Mousillon army blog

Ahhhhhhh ok, I get what you are going for now.. in that regard then, the character model is done very well.. the phrase 'hiding in plain sight' comes to mind.

You could almost imagine the army coming over the hill, and people seeing the brave Knights leading the army, feeling safe that such honorable and chivalrous warriors are there to protect them. Until they pay closer attention to some of the units of foot soldiers, noticing how they seem to shamble and stumble forward, sunlight gleaming off bleached bone, then recognising the colours and heraldry of the cursed land of mousillon.. by which time it is too late to run as savage undead winged beasts fly in for the kill..

Can't wait to see this army at it's completion..

RE: Mousillon army blog

I like the look. Even if it is a very subdued VC look. It would only seem easier if you were to change to the bretts. Or maybe a border prince Empire army. Then you could just keep the models and no one is any more wiser for it.

Will there be anything you add to the metallic shield on the horses head? It just seems that you may have lost interest in painting it. I would suggest maybe trying for a smaller Fleur if that's possible.

Great job as always, I look forward to seeing more!

RE: Mousillon army blog

The first vamp looks ace, and I would say he is kinda creepy. As stated, when you first look he seems to be a ordinary knight, but still. Creepy. Love the pose he has. Menacing.

May I ask what head you used for him?

Great work! :D

RE: Mousillon army blog

Ah, I thought that was what it was. Really good combination then. Looks like you didn't have to do very much/if any conversion work.

RE: Mousillon army blog

AWESOME! I'd love to see move pics, no joke.

The Skeletons look great, just what I thought they'd look like in that part of Bretonnia.

RE: Mousillon army blog

I really enjoy looking at your work. More-so due to how nice and clean the painting is. Just be forewarned, I an stealing your fellbat idea to an extent, that is truly ingenious. Also, I never thought of using the wall and fence set for basing like you have done. Its already stolen! Thanks for some nice ideas. Your work is definitely top-notch!
