Nagash Does Khemri (Nagash + TK) W.I.P

After a rather fun go at some VC I decided to focus on Nagash and slowly fell into obsession over his magnificent miniature and scenarios for armies to accompany him.

I decided to start working on some Tomb Kings to depict Nagash slowly conquering his way through Khemri and towards Settra and his legion.

I have already began the process of converting and basing but need some tips on spot colours and how to paint the tiles on their bases.

Without further ado here are the first few models to grace my painting table:

I am still debating whether to do sandstone for the stones on the bases or to paint them black like pieces of obsidian. I need some contrasting colours for the minis as well and maybe a spot colour.

I vote for sandstone. Even tho it's a little less original I always feel like things that are black look slightly unfinished. Also, the desert theme looks so nice imo. Looks nice so far btw. Looking forward to seeing some finished stuff.

Pretty slick use of the movement trays box for those tiles. Honestly, I'd do up a test model with the black. I can see points for both sides.

@ElementZero Obsidian tiles would look cool, glossy black stone glass with a purple or blueish hue would look awesome in my opinion. You could even paint some characters weapons as obsidian too...

As for contrast, the standard colours people seem to use are blue & red, they work nicely together. Dark green & red work nicely too. Black & white look decent but may not add the contrast you're looking for (especially if you go for the obsidian idea). Orange & yellow tend not to look too great on TK and purple seems to be quite striking. I was thinking of doing a TK army and looked at the World of Warcraft zone of Ahn' Qiraj for colour inspiration; dark brown & red with either purple or aquamarine coloured gems/small details. Back again after a productive-ish day of painting I have come up with my base, colour scheme and army list for my army and am pumped for the rest of the army. (once I get the shields for the unit)

Here are the dudes:

Questions I have:
1. Where can I get just shields for my tomb kings dudes
2. Suggestions for scarab colours
3. What to add to the bases to make them stand out more
4. Have seen many converted hierotitans with scales and was wondering if I have to convert that or can kit bash it from somewhere as it would be much easier. (my buddy has a nice giant model with a luminark of hysh leaning on his shoulder that looks great but I wanted to do something more TK-sy)

I am planning on doing a Tomb King/prince, 50 skellies, 3 chariots, a warsphinx (where I will get the tomb king model to convert) and finally NAGASH.

P.S. I washed the sandstone with about 4 layers of green wash and the effect, although not the desired green, is very old and broken down which was nice and unexpected.

After much time procrastinating and doing exams in no particular schedule or order. I went down to my local GW and got a nice warsphinx as a treat. I found as I was building it that it came with the full upper body for the necrosphinx and a tomb king/prince

That is what I have worked on this week and some of the painting updates to the scheme. I redid the sandy bases of the NK and have finished on rank of skellies and built another one

Moving on to a new miniature added to the range and a conversion that I am very happy with:

Hierotitan

Scales of Usirian with a heart anda feather from the egyptian myths

Base and spirit swirls (The green stuff is W.I.P.)

That is my new hierotitan conversion from the necrosphinx and a box of spirit hosts
How would you fill in the hole at the bottom of the necrosphinx torso as I cant find a way to do so that looks good

@ElementZero Excellent use of that TK kit with the VC spirit hosts, they look awesome.

For your scarabs, it depends on whether you want them to be plane black or to have that blue/green tint to them. I suggest the following:

Black scarabs: Basecoat Black / Dry brush Eshin Grey / Highlight Dawnstone / Wash Nuln Oil
Blueish scarabs: Basecoat Incubi Darkness / Dry brush The Fang / Highlight Russ Grey / Wash Nuln Oil

For blue/green scarabs (I haven't tried this following technique) try giving the second method a glaze of Waywatcher Green to give them a blue green tint.

Just spitballing here since I'm not sure the scale is right, but could you use the legs of an action figure underneath the hiero to make him look like he's climbing up out of the sand? Something like marvel legends (6") or GI Joe (4")?

Have you looked at the storm of magic scenery? There was a piece that was a whirlwind with skulls in it

Can't remember what it was called, but think it would fit really well as the "legs" of the giant
