With the new horrific miscast table scaring everybody and their dog away from magic, I was wondering if we could possibly use it to our advantage.

A necro on a horse costs roughly the same as 8 skellies (10 if you go for a second spell). March forwards between two über-blocks, and throw 5 dice at Raise Dead.

You've got a 19.5% shot at blowing up something most egregiously.

If you miss, there's zombies hanging out behind enemy lines, waiting for things to flee.

It's a gamble, but it could be fun if there's a couple of blocks we haven't been able to handle up to that point.

Thoughts?

I really don't think that the *chance* to blow up a few models will counter the cost. You may just end up rolling a loss of d3 magic levels on the chart and then give your opponent a free 75 points.

It's an interesting conceit, and perhaps someone could chance it, but I don't think I'll be that someone.

I'd rather have several Necromancers sticking with my army, spamming Invocation and channeling dice. Necromancers will be our primary Invocation guys, keeping our army together. 3-4 of them for the cost of a kitted vamp, and you can spam Invocation or Vanhel's... and if they fail/miscast... who cares? You got a few more.

I can't see this being a very viable tactic- I know lots of people have suggested it with a lot of different wizards, but really, how likely is it going to happen? I believe it's only 2-4 that sees the large template come out to play, the other results only use the small template (if at all), and with the 1" rule you're very unlikely to cause massive damage to anyone but yourself.

Ooh! Ooh! I just saw a common item that causes all doubles to be IF ( or whatever the new term is).

And S10 abuse happens in a variety of flavours: Large template, small template, and BTB.

So the 'cheap' Necro missile now costs 98 points on a horse, charge into combat (you're going to die anyways) use the book and kill 2-15 models.

I suppose this would work best if you were playing empire and got doubly-countercharged.

It's still almost 100 points, but against the right enemy target, it could well be worthwhile. You've still got a 15/36 shot at rolling something juicy on the miscast table.

In addition to the arguments already presented, 8th edition has a rule prohibiting units from moving within 1" of an enemy unit they are not combating. So the tactic advocated in the OP would effect less enemy models than you might think.

And if you use 5 dices and roll double 1, is spell casted or not? If yes, then you will have 19.5% chance of not doing anything and just die :)

Why couldn't you charge a flank with him (preferably with a friendly unit to their front) and then just go crazy with your magic? You can cast VDM on the friendly unit, summon Zombies behind the unit you are attacking maybe even go mad with a handfull of dice on something like Curse of Years if you were that way inclined?! with charging you don't need to worry about the 1" rule and if you do it right you won't have to worry about your own troops.

I see a lot of potential for this daring thinking Fodder-my-boy, nice idea I will try it tonight against some Ogres and some Lizzies. I'll post my results tonight.:zombie:

I might try Wind of Undeath. Might be cool to pull out an ethereal unit instead of a load zombies. Higher casting seems more likely to give us the desired effect oooohhhh wait Necro's can't have those spells can they? I might try it with a Vamp in that case, Talisman of the lycni and FL, what's that around 145/150. I normally lose the game to stupid reasons and bad judgment, might as well at least do it on purpose!!

Can't wait to answer my friends patronizing "why would you do that", and "that's just stupid" remarks by leaving a F@#$ing great hole in his ranks ha ha.

Can anyone think of a good strategy so that if I don't pop and take out half his unit as "planned", I at least might survive the combat in some way so I can try again next turn? :zombie:

lol i heard the idea with goblin bombs (Fluffy Too!). Sounds hilarious but in practice it might not work well, let us know how it goes.

Goblin bombs don't work as they have thier own miscast table in the O&G book. If someone tries it on you with gobbos hit them with the rulebook

The Funny thing about reality is when you want something to happen really bad it usually doesn't and I can see this happening with the wizard bombs.

AAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH I lost!!!!! I got the vortex off in my last magic faze and sucked 5 Saurus and a Salamander into oblivion though!!

I left my Lords unit out in the open and paid the price with a bull charge from 6 Ogre bulls and a Butcher turn 5, what a dick!:zombie:
