New GW figure cases

As you all probably know, GW has completely revamped their foam figure case designs, with this weird sorta zigzag pattern to hold stuff. I'm not sure how well it will work, but the video they just posted to their youtube account sure looks pretty cool. I have to admit, I was pretty impressed with what came out of there at the end of the the second box....

I'm pretty happy with my current, magnet sheet lined storage bins which let me store entire units in formation, but I do have some larger models that just don't fit and have to lie on their sides on foam beds at the moment, so I could see myself picking up one of these eventually to handle them, if they work as well in real life as they do in this video.

Not sure about the zig-zag foam, I prefer individual slots and go to great lengths to neatly cut and arrange the tray layouts to maximize the economy of space.

I'm also wary of some of the newer cases on the market as they use a foam that's much too coarse for miniatures. I bought some of the newer black foam trays from GW and noticed that they are coarser than the old red foam, but not too bad; about the limit of what I'd tolerate for my models. Hopefully this new GW zig-zag foam is nice and soft.

Given that I more or less did this with my old red GW cases by gutting them and re-arranging the foam, it's pretty cool to see these.

I would imagine that the foam is going to be quite soft in order to properly bend and compact around a variety of shapes- i'm not sure the old stuff would be capable of doing that too well.

They look pretty good to be honest, and the price is fairly reasonable considering how much they can store.
I'm gonna have to see some in person though before I buy.

That's not so bad. I can't do the individual slot cases anymore, though. They take ten years to set up a horde army out of. I actually started laughing when the video went to fast forward.

Yeah, these look really good and are priced well. GW is getting a lot of praise for them which is nice to see. I'll be interested to see them in person. Whoever picks one up first, try to post a review and do some video showing it off or something.

Is that the rat chitterings and whispering voices I keep hearing in my head? I found some strange dark green obsidian like stone, I keep craving to chew on it too...

So if I'm seeing this foam right, if you don't have it jam packed your stuff will move more than you'd want. Not saying it's bad, just that it may require a full army.
I've used the old cases from GW, then switched to Battlefoam for 40k when my army approached 10k, but for fantasy I'm still looking. Gonna keep my eyes on this and see what the reviews are before I hand over my money. Getting by right now with magnetized bases on cookie sheets(not elegant, but effective)

I'm getting the middle-sized one next month. I'm already thinking that whilst great for plastic/resin models metal ones will simply slide through the zig-zag foam and bounce around...

My contact at GW says these are one of the best products he thinks GW has ever made, everyone is really excited about them and the foam apparently hugs the miniatures and its firmer then it looks. So it holds them in place well. He personally had not held one yet, but he spoke to people who had. Supposedly they are going to have a supply issue too, so grab them as they could be OS for 3-4 weeks after this weekend. My advice is go check them out this weekend and grab one if you like it.

Any idea how these will go with models with large pointy wings and other delicate bits? I'd never go back to a foam storage system for my models, it's simply so inferior to a magnetic storage system, but for some of the larger models (terrorgheist, I'm looking at you) its not practical. This looks like a really neat system, and I saw they pulled Nagash out of one of them, so who knows?

Well, the bring Nagash, one of the Dread Abyssal riding Mortarchs (who is that, Arkhan? I can't tell), and an archii out of the middle sized box, all varying degrees of large / fragile / pointy.

Then again, it's a promotional video, so exactly how well the box holds those models will still be an open question until we start seeing some customer accounts & more detailed reviews. Until then, all we can say is that they're theoretically able to handle such models.
