[Master Vampire]

Ok ok, us Noctemites sometimes do get out of the house (coffin?) and we sometimes end up in a cinema! I guess it could help each other a bit about the new movies coming out. Because we aren't all that rich and we spend all our money on miniatures anyhow.

I really hate it when I download a movie and it just doesn't seem 'right'. A movie that was better to watch in the cinema, despite paying for it. And vice versa.

So I guess it could help if we post a short review and the final opinion about whether it a good movie to watch in the cinema or not.

I'll kick off with 2 movies I saw recently:

Toy Story 3

Lee Unkrich did it: making a third movie that surpasses the first and second movie in quality and style! The great thing about this movie is that you could even watch this movie as a standalone version. There isn't much background information you need to know, yet the story being told is incredible.

I've seen this movie 3D and it all starts when Andy is 17 and nearly ready to go to college. He once played with his toys with a lot of dedication. Woody, the cowboy, and Buzz, the spaceman, are the main protagonists. The toys hear they will be dumped at a day-care centre. Woody is suspicious about it but the rest, having been alone for so long, look in anticipation. And that's where the real terror starts...

Final opinion: the movie is very well structured leaving little to no unanswered questions, along with the ability to get you to sympathise with the toys, makes it a really good animation movie. Possibly the best in my opinion (but I haven't been a fan of the new era animations).

Despite this, it could have been watched at home. The cinema didn't really add anything special to the sphere. Nor did the 3D experience.

Predators

Are you a fan of the original Predator the Movie with the old Governator? Then you will love this movie, as Nimrod Natal really took out the guns. I guess it's a kind of a niche public for this movie, but I saw lot of women too at the cinema. Odd really. Or is it not?

Waking up in the sky, Royce (Adrien Brody) fights for his life to open his parachute. Having been mysteriously knocked unconscious, he finds companions of the same fate. The group slowly gets to know each other's background and the story of the forest, and from there infer what's really happening. In a big forest where strange things happen, it is bound to get ugly.

Final opinion: must-see in the cinema. This movie is too good to watch on your little screen (scream all you want, the movie theatre always got a bigger one). If you loved the first one, you will love this one. This one stays true to the concept of the Predator, and it gets intense.

The movie stays to it's original idea, so there is bound to be a few predictable things to happen. I usually let the story unfold and not think too much, but I guess it can be a spoiler for some. Nevertheless, it was well worth my money!

ah cool i work in a cinema at the moment as the day time manager... and sadly i cant stand watching films any more lol. but i saw Toy story 3 and it was brilliant was an emotional rollacoaster :'(

Predators was an amazing film. I'm glad I saw it, but the cinema just doesn't do it for me anymore (even the VIP seats (you pay like £1 extra and get niiice leather seats and more leg room) and the people there, who are my age but less mature, ruin the whole thing by talking the whole way through. But, if you like the cinema, I recommend Predators. The director and producer did a good job.

Also, anyone who just watched a new movie, be it in the cinema or downloaded, you can write a short review of it you want!

Anyhow, new review:

Inception

I guess Christoper Nolan can add another hit under hit belt. Rating at 9.0 on IMDB, placing 3rd only after the Shawshank Redemption and the Godfather, this movie is to be reckoned with (ok ok, there are less votes for Inception, but 134k already).

What's the worst virus a person can have? Is it a bug? Is it a parasite? No, it's a thought. It's as simple as that. How do you plant them in? With dreams.
Dreams can be your best experience but also your worst time ever. Cobb (Leonardo di Caprio) is able to penetrate minds, reaching into the unconscious without the person knowing it. Information, thoughts, emotions, nothing is safe in your memory. Equipped with a deadly ability, Cobb learned how to perform a whole new style of crime and exploits it fully. But, isn't Cobb just a simple family man?

Final opinion: superb movie, not cinema worthy. Why? Because it's a downright nasty movie to understand. You want to have fun at the cinema, watch the movie, go home and sleep. Problem is, if you don't focus the first 30 minutes about how it all is happening, you'll probably have a hard time to understand the rest of the movie. And then you'll think "why did I pay money for this?".

It's a very well-built movie. A lot of directors have struggled to make anything about the concept of mind-change, mind-twisting or mind-altering ideas. Christopher Nolan made it happen. Or does he want us to believe that?

(Additionally & personally, the special effects are of no higher level of some old movies. But it's more about the idea and plot, really. For this movie, I didn't know what to expect. If mind-changing or alteration has always been part of your fascination, I guess going to the cinema will add to the overall sphere. Lack of special effect and genuine interest are the main reasons why I wouldn't want to view it in the cinema, along with the stuff above)

I have to disagree with you on Predators. The first movies were AMAZING. Aliens Vs Predator, Predator with Arnold, etc. They were amazing, had depth, and were great fun to watch with the explosions of blood and Gore.

Predators was just Gore. There was NOTHING to the plot, no depth to the characters, and they tried to milk the franchise for all it's got. Honestly, if they just had some character that could identify with the audience it would've been better, but it was just a sub-par attempt at a movie.



Inception was amazing, though. Spot on review.

I have to disagree with you on Predators. The first movies were AMAZING. Aliens Vs Predator, Predator with Arnold, etc. They were amazing, had depth, and were great fun to watch with the explosions of blood and Gore.

Predators was just Gore. There was NOTHING to the plot, no depth to the characters, and they tried to milk the franchise for all it's got. Honestly, if they just had some character that could identify with the audience it would've been better, but it was just a sub-par attempt at a movie.

The movie lacked any kind of depth. There was only one big question to answer (not writing it up here for spoiler reasons). The movie tended towards 'a nightmare come true' than any much action. The movie starts slow as well.

But honestly, a group of commando's in the jungle in the first movie isn't something to relate to either as an audience... Not to mention Arnold on steriods' appearance...

AVP 2, *shudders* Not matter what I watched AVP 2 on, whatever the time of day, whatever the screen brightness, it was dark. Not in the good, 'scary' dark, in the what the hell is happening sort of dark. Anyone else notice that? So, is Predators worth watching, even if you did not like the original?

Well, it's definantly more realistic-based in that extent. It's not as if the humans dropped there are totally clueless what's happening and then die because of that. There seems to be some sort of ''balance'' in it and not like, ''These things are going to kill us anyhow. Runnnnnn!''

Yeah I agree with this. Original Predator was a classic etc, but the last one, whilst ok to kill some time would not be something I would watch again.

Ok this is the first time I've ever reveiwed a movie

Piranha 3D

Plot: Prehistoric Piranha vs. dumb drunk collage kids on Spring Break.

Violence & Gore: I give it a 8 lots of people getting eaten, caught in boat moters, ect. and the Piranha bites look realistic but theres parts that take it waaaay to far (Theres a part where two Piranha fight over who gets to eat a Mans Reproductive organ, then the winner chokes on it).

Nudity: 10 pretty much whenever someone isn't getting eaten there bikini clad women dancing around flashing their goods.

humor: 5 it has its moments one guys last words are "Wet...T-shirt contest......Wet T-shirt Contest"

Jumpy parts: 5 it was really good with these they where well spaced out but a bit predictable.


Ghoulys point: If you go see this, go with a bunch of buddys, I wouldn't go see it with a girl, just go enjoy it for the gore and nudity but don't expect much from it.

I saw it, mindless violence, automatic AA-12, go see it and grow chest hair just from watching it.

I did yesterday, as a matter of fact. Following the Standard review format, here we go.

Plot: A mercenary team is hired to kill a General in Vilena. Once there, complications arise, forcing a decision by the Expendables leader (Stallone) that puts the entire team into a position they aren't meant to survive. Or are they? Muahah!

Action: Great. Some decent CQC fight scenes, a whole lot of explosions, and some nifty guns. If you like brainless explosions with minimal plot, go for it!

Gore: People's heads get shot off, get shot in half, knives are repeatedly stuck in peoples faces (Courtesy of Statham), and there are some pretty psychopathic people in the group that really, really love killing people. Lots of people dying, but very little realistic blood. The few blood shots that are directly shown are obviously CG'ed, and CG'ed badly. A 'Meh' rating on overall gore, but on the positive side of Meh.

Nudity/Sex: None. But the female lead is -GORGEOUS-. In my opinion of course.

Humor: Oh lord this one surprised me. The entire theater laughed at 'The' Governors cameo appearance. There are a few one liners there that simply had me dying. Jet li has a bone to pick with another part of the group (Gunner, don't know the actor name) the entire movie, and is constantly the butt of a lot of jokes, but he takes it well. I'd give this movie a surprisingly strong rating for humor, as a matter of fact.

Verdict: Go see it with the Boys. My sister really enjoy watching it, but she's a special case. There's a lot of humor, a lot of shooting and violence, and a plethora of nifty one liners and ridiculous situations. It's a well directed movie, in my opinion, though I admittedly have little knowledge of such things.

Here's mine:

Avatar: The Last Airbender

Plot: To avoid spoiling it, it's a classic good vs bad, based on a mythical world where certain special people can "bend" (in otherwords control) the elements, either of air, water, fire or earth.

Action: Not too shabby. Has some decent hand to hand scenes, the "magical" element fight scenes are the highlight but they are not has often or perhaps as big as they could have been.

Nudity: Don't bother

Gore: I think someone has a nosebleed at some point.

Humour: Not really, it keeps things quite serious.

Overall: The move is just an "ok" for me. The basic concept (based off a TV series on Nickelodeon IIRC) is actually ok though of course a little predictable. The big issue for me with this move was that it felt rushed. For example when you watch a Star Trek movie, the movie is just one big extra episode. However this instead felt like it was trying to take a full series and squeeze it into two hours. So the story seemed to jump a lot. One minute their fighting, a bit of talking squashed in to keep the story on line, and then onto the next location. The very small piece of romance really didn't work as once minute they met, they next scene they're
hand in hand.

The saving grace are the effects which are pretty good, and the fight scenes using the elements are good, especially water. So I would say ok if there is nothing else you really want to see more, but not something I would watch again or buy. Kids might like it more.

I agree for the most part DoN. Bad acting though IMHO.
The cool part was that I actually saw how they shot the final water tribe scene (the big wave thingy) as I was visiting Kerner (the company that did some of the effects) at that day as part of a school trip to San Francisco. Made for a very spectacular day. 20 containers of water all dumped into a ramp at the same exact moment looks very cool.

Gunner was played by Dolph Lundgren.

There were quite a few Hollywood insider jokes that were pretty funny, but it was definitely a throwback as far as style and plot. I saw it and felt a little nostalgic for the Rambo II/Commando/Delta Force days of the mid-80s. I think it's the first movie I've seen in the theater in over a year.

 

[Craken]

Scott Pilgrim vs the World

Plot: Pretty much what you see on the preview. Guy falls in love with girl, all is normal except for the video game music, till he has to start fighting his new gf evil ex's in arcade style battle

Action: Very unique, very stylized, awesome for anyone that ever had a love for early 90's video games.

Nudity: No nudity, but lingerie in one scene is pretty nice

Gore: Don't think there is any actual blood, but they do some cool things without it.

Humor: Pretty funny overall, not as funny as I thought, but had some laugh out loud moments.

Overall: Scott Pilgrim was a very unique movie, very much different from the cookie cutter mold Hollywood has been producing. If you loved videos games from earlier days there is no reason you shouldn't like it, also if you like anime, comic books, or comedy or even action flick you should enjoy seeing this one.

Solomon Kane (older release 2009)

Plot: An evil man that has done terrible things and is destined for hell, decides to try and change his fate and redeem himself, and does so by vanquishing evil.

Action: Gladiator/conan style fighting, with very cool fight scenes, and great special effects.

Nudity: I don't believe there was any but there could have been some in the backgrounds.

Gore: Tons, again think gladiator, but more brutal or assassin like in some parts.

Humor: Not really any at all

Overall: This movie surprised me how well it was actually done, as I had heard nothing of it. There are some pretty unique to film monsters and villains, believe it was the first movie that I have ever seen ghouls in. There where all sorts of evil undead type monsters and demons, so if your into any of that as I assume most are on this forum you should like this one.
