Too bad, though, I really liked the old WD, I just don't feel like returning to the store every week for an issue. :/
Oh well, I might pick one up every once in a while if I feel the need.

On a different note, I do understand why they might have opted for a weekly magazine and I encourage the idea- personally I look forward to weekly "updates" of hopefully even weekly new releases!
Also, WV isn't so bad in my opinion, it just has a very specific market I assume- I'd pick up WV every once in a while because it contains all of those pictures without the added text, I consider myself experienced enough to be able to find out how to get the same results and besides, sometimes all I need is a little inspiration that I might not find online.
Besides, I'm a big sucker for a filled book case.

The thing is does anyone here think that they would want one EVERY month? I subscribed to white dwarf for batreps, new releases and generally something to read that dealt with the hobby I like. Visions won't be able to deliver that, so for me it doesn't cut it.

If I've got it right weekly will be more text, but you can't subscribe?

Well sunny, i can understand that bashing gets tiresome even though i indulge in it as well.

The thing is though, this thread stopped being interesting when the video of Warhammer Visions got posted. That just shone the light on what a waste it truly is and acknowledged all the fear of the cynics and destroyed every opportunity for the optimists to be optimistic.
Guess thats when the bashing started, for good reason.

Maybe all the bashers (including me) are hoping that one highranked GW employee accidently took the time to read this and realise what a missed opportunity they made.

I was in one of my local game stores yesterday (ironically buying the new issue of No Quarter) and I had the opportunity to leaf through the new White Dwarf. Yeek. I think I counted maybe three pages of what I consider valuable content, by which I mean content that enhances my gaming experience, my hobby skills, or my understanding of the setting.

I also noticed a hardbound book from GW called "Armies of Renown" that came in under my radar. It's profiles of various people's armies (a quick internet search informs me that it's reprinting material from White Dwarf), so mostly pictures. It's a neat thing. The armies are interesting, though not jaw-dropping. I'm not sure why it needed to be hard bound and given a $30 price tag.

What's puzzling to me is why this was released so close to the release of Warhammer: Visions, which is doing pretty much the same thing, but with less text and more redundant pictures?

To be clear: I love miniatures. I love looking at pictures of really well-painted miniatures, especially if they've been approached creatively and/or heavily converted. Put all of that in a book for a reasonable price and I might buy it. Instead, I feel like I'm being offered a lot of overpriced, poorly edited material that isn't as interesting as what I can look at on Cool Mini or Not for free.

Armies of Renown was released before Christmas, presumably to serve as a potential Christmas present. It's just a collection of the Armies of Renown articles from the last year or so in White Dwarf.

It's not bashing to simply give your opinion. I didn't see a sign in this thread saying fanboys only.

I went back through some old White Dwarf magazines, and I realised they were not very good back then either. It was new back then, I was more into the hobby, and everything was far more exciting. New background stories, new armies, and so on. I didn't know anything about the stuff before it so it became the staple of my knowledge about fluff and lore. That's another thing I've noticed, the lore of GW tend to shift and change quite a bit over time. Some things stay the same, some does not. Today, I'm older and things aren't as fresh, indeed, time seem to go past quicker, and I find myself spending time on other stuff.

The changes I see before me now with WD and Vision is that WD will turn more into a model catalogue, and Vision will have more meaty and hobby related stuff in them. Isn't that what people have complained about before? That WD lacked the interesting articles and battle reports?

While I am not sure I agree that gamers hate change, internet does have a way to letting the most vocal people seem like the majority. Same can be said for PC gaming forums where the most vocal whiners will cry for nerfs against anything that they lose against. However, just because someone doesn't agree with you does not make them a troll or hater. If we all sat and agreed with each other things would get stale very quickly.

Well. I will be the detractor here and say I like the new format. This enables me to buy just the ones I want. The ones that pertain to WHFB. I don't play 40K or Hobbit so I don't appreciate content related to those games. I don't even like the miniatures. (Well, I like the Hobbit miniatures because they COULD be used for WHFB.)

I can quickly flip through the magazine and then if I like it I pay my $4 and I buy it. Before if I wanted to read only one or two articles I had to put up with all the rest of the rubbish and pay three times as much. I haven't seen a Warhammer Visions so I can't comment on that one yet.

Are the mags not sealed in plastic now, Thindol? Same as army books. I went in to a shop to show a friend (and I hoped potential new player) the new Lizardmen book as I had been hyping them to him for days, only to find the damned thing shrink wrapped. Yeah, he was super impressed by the army... Totally... Not.

every store is supposed to have 1 book of each army unwrapped so you can look inside or if u go to the store with rules/lore/whatever related questions.

The new mags have been around for a while now.

so far my experience is follows:

Mainly a Dwarf player, so picked up the first 4 with Dwarf content.
Bought the last couple due to imp knight and black templar content.

Bought the first visions to see what it was
Bought the second visions due to dwarfs

The two stores where I live both display all their WD mags not wrapped up. All unwrapped on the shelves.
Visions is wrapped up, but there are always a couple of display copies.

WD Changes:

Pros:
No more new store here
No more direct advert for whatever
Better painting guides than I have seen in a while
Can pick and choose the ones I want

Cons:
More expensive
Subtle advertising of "isn't the new model great"
Terrible battle reports
Very shore

Visions:

Pros:
Pretty
Lots of model pic content
Themes and ideas in one place

Cons:
Large amounts of similar content on the net for free


Generally, I prefer what we have now to what we had prior to the change, and it does free them to move to more ad hoc releases so we don't need to wait for waves or such like. Generally, whilst there are many issues at GW, I see some improvement as well. Rules for units included in the box set now, Ditching Finecast in favour of good quality plastic models. (I still won't buy any Finecast models. I bought one, and won't buy more.) Putting forward mini games and hobby content again. Their skirmish game for deciding fist turn for example, it was trivial, 99% non-tactical but simple, cheap, required no purchases and replaced a dice roll with something with a bit of interest, and might have inspired a few people to do something. Genuine hobby content again that won't make them cash.

Until they sort out their approach they will struggle but they are debt free and profitable which is a good starting point. Would it help if Ward left? Probably, but we don't know who would come in so its an unknown quantity. I don't like there being any iTunes only content. I really hope they sort it out, and hold their prices for a while. To put it in context though

10 Skeletons on GW = £15.50 in store, £1.55 each.

20 Skeletons from Mantic (Old unit, warriors) = £14.99, £0.75 each; less than half price
10 Skeleton archers from mantic (New unit) = £14.99, £1.50 each; almost identical

It's not just GW that are settling on roughly £1.50 a model at the moment.

But yes, minor derailment aside, I prefer the new formats. I won't now be running a sub or buying every one now. Just the ones I want.
