It's that time of the year again, when you're able to swear semi-official oaths of self-improvement that will take effect on January 1st and onwards. The seriousness of this can of course be discussed but striving towards the better is always a commendable effort. Share Your resolutions here!

My own resolution is simple: be more productive. Right now I have two ambitions of the creative kind in motion. One of them is to get my Warhammer army painted and the other is to get cracking on programming my own Shoot-Em-Up game(s). As enthusiastic as I can feel about both these things, I've always had trouble with seizing the initiative to get started, and then also to keep the pace up. What I need is to lay down some discipline on myself and form a week-to-week structure/schedule which will have me regularily progress my stuff in at least some way, barring any unforeseen/special events or occurances.

Hey MS, I have my plateful, but I have friends that have done what you're doing (non-professionally, but did take a 2 year degree in it after a Computer Science degree).

Have you selected an Engine or anything?

Looks like we have a number of programmers on this forum. Maybe we can collaborate

Edit: and to not derail the thread, my resolution is to get back into shape, and read more books (half and half between programming books and books for enjoyment).

I shall be just as randomly indecisive as I've been this year, why? Cause it is fun!

@Grish, I'm using a game-maker called Touhou Danmakufu which lets you create your own stages and bosses through a C-like programming language. Thankfully, I'm a registered member at a site where a lot of seasoned Danmakufu'ers share their stuff and experience. However, this entire project also includes learning how to draw some decent sprites as those can be used as character models, custom skins for bullets and more.

I did create a trial-sequence earlier this month by using "borrowed" material for the sprites and background. Check it out. :)

For another (and a lot more impressive) example of what can be done with Danmakufu, take a look at the link in my signature.

Some kind of collaboration between people here on CN might be an idea though.

Don't worry, that's a common misconception. I believe the usual (or "correct", if you want to) term for those 3D-shooters such as Halo, Call of Duty etc. is FPS, due to them being First Person Shooters. Building one of those from the ground up must be a lot harder! :vampire2:

I might be a programmer someday - at the moment I'm merely a student of "systems development". I started the education this fall and before that I've had zero programming experience, although it's coming along quite well since I can invest that which I've learned into something game-related during my free time. :)

Nah its not too hard with an engine. Just have to model the character, and enemies. Put in the relevant information into the weapons. That's what an engine is for; building an engine sure is difficult. With an engine, you could create a FPS in about 200 man hours. A crappy one, but you'd have guns, extremely basic levels, and could do some basic enemies in that time. But you could still run around and shoot things.

Ah ok. I've been programming for about 12 years now. Good luck!

Well, I've got two resolutions that I can share. The other resolutions, well...DoN would approve of them!

Anyways, simple enough stuff.

I -am- going to be debt free by my birthday. It's going to happen.

I -am- going to get back into the oh so excellent shape I was in by my birthday. That's ten months from now. To the day.

I've already started working on them. Got a budget written out, and running 2+ miles a day and doing 45 minutes of my Gung Fu/Ground work besides, and eating healthy.

Money is going to be really, really tight for 6 months or so...but oh well. I'll feel good once I'm done.

Hapy new Years!

my 2010 New Years Resolutions

make the switch to 50% less caffeine coffee

Get serious about my painting, this is a two fold goal that includes getting off my butt and paint my army and getting back into my artwork and trying to do something with my talent to benefit my life.

that's about it I like to keep it simple so my goals are attainable, worse way to start a New Year is to have a whole bunch of New Years Resolutions and then feel disappointed in yourself for not reaching them.

And it is all about the thought behind it, I could of easily said I want to make a bunch of money off my art and if I couldn't attain that goal I would feel my artwork has no value and it would also be a hit to my self esteem.
And using the perspective of Benefit allows for more scenarios of success , I could meet some new friends, make some money or best yet some hot looking lady will want me to draw her in the nude :devil2: if you've seen Titanic you know where this road takes you.
But you can see the logic I am using well enough of the Vampire's Secret. I hope everyone has a fun and safe New Years Eve.

Making sure it's better than this year.

Damn right xd

I want to get fit and get rid of my podgy belly (curse my desk job!) and get back the 6-pack I had a few years ago, so I'm starting the gym next week.

Get a job in Leeds, so I can move there and finally get a decent sized house.

Get out more, go to some concerts.

Most importantly - have even more perverted thoughts and sex xd

I might squeeze in some time between all that to do some more work on CN as well ;)

I'll second that you need to have more perverted thoughts, DoN - your perviness just isn't as inspiring as it was a year ago. I guess I've become accustomed to it, which is why it won't impact me like it used to.

You need to step it up a notch or two, oh great perverted one. :D

Resolutions ???, for warhammer, make the time to get back to gaming with my Vamps! I've lost so much time to the job! :(. I was just getting into them and now I feel lost, time is so fleeting o_o. And secondly is get to finishing my builds and painting, at least to tabletop standards. Thats it, so I hope to be around more and hopefully count on this site and fellows on getting me and my army up to speed. Happy New Year !!! :skull:

- Finish my VC up to 3.000pts (got them but oh the painting!)
- Finish my new Skaven units (easily done but it needs to be DONE)
- Be a good uncle to my upcoming nephew or niece (any day now and it's going to be a challenge because I hate children:zombie1: )
- Finally finish my own website I've been working on for far too long(damn CSS coding is driving me nuts)
- Loose more weight and get healthier; I'm getting there but first surgery is already coming up this month and the second one in March (unless I'm too fat as it's plastic surgery)
- Learn Hebrew and Italian (already know loads of languages but I've wanted to learn these two for years now)
- And I'll join in the more perverted thoughts although according to my friends that will be an impossible task:devil2:

I have 2 main goals:

1) Step up my dedication to college work. I need to start putting effort in, otherwise I can kiss goodbye to any ideas I have of going to Uni. So, starting tomorow, its revision time!
2) Get back into Warhammer. Over the last year I have found myself drifting away from the game as a player, and turning more towards the background/story side of it. And despite how fun that is, I really want to start playing again, it's a great way to make friends, plus it might motivate me to paint up my models!

Well I already got an early start on my first resolution :thumb:

1.) Have a fresh and completely new start with both 40k and Fantasy, only one army each, every time I get new models I must completely paint and finish them before I build/buy new ones, aside from bases. I do bunches of those together to ensure consistency. No more backup and piles of unfinished work!
40k: Imperial Guard ( First Priority )
Fantasy: Vampire Counts ( Second Priority )
Also, ensure that they are all well maintained, organized, and always in great condition.

2.) When Track finishes, that I continue to stay in shape and do 10x better next for Cross Country season in the Fall and onwards.xD

3.) Continue to be more social, make this year better than the last, and love life.

Then I have other small Misc. things that I hope to accomplish.

I have 2:

No more spirits - that last time with rum killed me... I think I passed out half naked screaming "Forgive me!" in front of my friends mom :P

Keep track of things! - Just general organising really

I'll get in shape next year :P
