WHFB 7th edition rulebook page 121:

A character that is not allowed to wear ordinary armour cannot be given magical armour (unless differently specified in the armybook)
A character that is not allowed to carry ordinary shields cannot be given magic shields

new vampire counts armybook page 85:
all vampires may be given magic armour (including the enchanted shield). This replaces any similar items of mundane armour they posses through having the avatar of Death or Dread Knight vampiric powers

If your vampire does not have either of the vampiric powers, you CANNOT give him magical armour or shields.

Yet I see tons of lists in the battlereport section with this error.

please be aware: judges in tournaments will catch you for having a illegal list.

That's in no way true. That is because both rules are talking about something entirely different. The Rule Book says that you can't take any magic armour if you can't have mundane armour. The VC AB states that any vamp can take magic armour. If you decide so to take, say the Flayed Hauberk, as well as Dread Knight, the DK's heavy armour does not get used.

Also notice:

This replaces any similar items of mundane armour they posses through having the avatar of Death or Dread Knight vampiric powers

It says 'similar', so if you give a vamp Dread Knight and Armour of Night you don't get the effects of the heavy armour on DK, but you do get the effects of AoN, including any other armour, like shields and barding.

that is complete rubbish. Why would the rulebook explain this? It didn't do that for the templar grand master in the empire armybook. He comes with full plate, but he can buy magic armour.
Empire armybook doesn't state anything about replacing the full plate.

You know why? because it is abudantly clear the templar grand master can buy magic armour because he has a full plate.

Vampires don't. they only have armour if they buy the vampiric power for it and then they can buy magic armour.

Rules as written foulks.....

"Any Vampire can take magical armour"

Rule as written Pal... with an added passage to make sure Vampires don´t run around wearing two different sets of armour at the same time.

Vampires are ALLOWED to wear mundane armor, but they can't buy it without a bloodline power. The rule is there for wizards that want to buy magic shields and such, who are not ALLOWED to use a mundane shield.

There isn't any overriding needed, as far as I can tell it fits fine within the rules.

I think the top of page 85 of the Army Book clears this one up pretty easily:

Quote:
All Vampires may be given magic armour(including the Enchanted Sheild). This replaces any similar items of mundane armour they possess through having the Avatar of Death or Dread Knight Vampric Powers.

It just means that if you have the Dread Knight power and Flayed Hauberk, you dont count the Heavy Armour that comes with the Dread Knight, other wise people would be trying to combine the two for a negative armour save.

Its pretty simple really.

I agree as does everyone on this forum that all vamps can take magical armour, Astragoth can you please refrain from also stating on every army list posted that vamps cannot take magical armour as some of the less experienced members may get confused, I have seen about 5 where you have already posted this on. This discussion should be settled in this thread first before posting on others.

Correct.

All Vampires may be given magical armour (including the Enchanted Shield)

Correct.

Question answered but people keep in mind that people do miss things every now and then, so lets chill :)
