this comed from the Age of Sigmar facebook page

That’s right, guys. As of this summer, you’ll have your pick of 3 great ways to play Warhammer Age of Sigmar. We couldn’t be more excited, and we’re certain you’ll love it too.

We’ll have more details for you soon. For now:

Open Play is probably the most similar to the way you play now, but there are new rules on the way to give you even more freedom, including the option for huge multi-player battles.

Narrative Play is as you’d expect – recreating the great stories and epic encounters from the Age of Sigmar. To help you forge your own stories within the Mortal Realms, there are also some really cool campaign rules and tools on the way as well.

Finally, Matched Play is something we know a lot of you have been keen to see. We’ve put these rules together in association with some of the world’s biggest tournament organisers, to create a new standard for balanced competitive play. And yes, it includes points values.

Okay Internet, go nuts.

With things like infinite summoning and stackable automatic saves points seem kind of pointless. Still, some guidelines to army building won't hurt I guess. I'll probably be more into narrative play.

Match Play 'includes' points values, but is not 'limited to' such. They're apparently working with the SCGT people, so it's likely that this will include an entire supplemental rules pack as well.

Honestly, this shows an ability to recognize misteps and redirect course that GW has been painfully lacking over the past decade, as well as some much needed community interaction - both in terms of maintaining the facebook page and making announcements like this on it and more impressively in terms of reaching out to tournament organizers to help craft rules tailored to an organized play environment.

I cannot help but see this as a hugely positive move. A shame that things had to get to this point for it to happen, but this definitely feels like a turning point, in a good way.

And even for those not interested in competitive tournaments and pick-up games, the campaign rules mentioned in the narrative section sound like something this game has been crying out for even for the sort of free form narrative games it's been aimed at up to this point.

while i personally think that points will always be unbalanced i still think that it's a good move. first up they decided to keep the current ruleset along side the new points system. and it also shows that they are listening to the customers. i'm curious as to how they will integrate the points with the current and new units at this stage.

Because the points are not printed I think they will be just digital so they can easily be addepted when they are to unbalanced. This will be way better then in 8th.

With summoning, ues something needs to be changed for tournement play, but with the new course I am sure they will do something about it

I was going to post about this, but I'm glad the news are out!

I imagine they will correct and fix some things for tournament play (aside from all we know), like Kairos's ability to choose any result on dice rolls only applicable to a single dice (should be... die?) and only for possible results (ie: 1-6).

Interaction with your customers is a fine way to start rebuilding the Fantasy/AoS lost community.

So... we wait for it, and then... we shall assemble our armies!! =D!

I must say that I am pretty excited by this ;) This is surely some progress. Won't give us square formations, but maybe it'll be able to compromise between total freedom of army composition and some kind of balance. I wonder if those rules will include Tomb Kings and all the lately squatted minis.

Still, I am waiting for my customization options, items and powers. I don't want my every Vampire be the same generic one ;)

Let's wait and see if they come up with points for all the "discontinued" warscroll compendium armies like Tomb Kings and Bretonnians.

They've already responded to that question in the affirmative. Our Nehekharan brethren won't be left behind. So that's good news. I mean, the system could still be terrible, it's not guaranteed to be a great result, but the attempt itself, and the way they're doing it - bringing in the SCGT people, committing to support of discontinued lines, etc - that's all very positive signs.

The Generals Handbook is an awesome new release from games workshop that includes 3 new ways to play Age of Sigmar including Open, Narrative and Matched play.

Open play is pretty much Age of Sigmar as we know it now, Narrative is story driven along the line of the realm gate wars books and the 3rd version is Matched play which includes a FULL POINTS SYSTEM for all Warscrolls in the Age of Sigmar.

Ben Curry (Bad Dice Podcast), Dan Heelan (Heelanhammer), Wayne Kemp and Russ Veal (Facehammer) were invited into games workshop to, and i quote, “Help make it great”

This episode is our experiences on this fantastic weekend and a first look at what is coming in the Generals Handbook.

In the show, in addition to talking about the fantastic time we had meeting Jervis Johnson and other members of the studio, and getting to play stet some of the ideas and scenarios in the book and we also release more information about the contents of the book.

  • First thing, its a book and will be release in the summer.
  • There are 5 new campaigns including path to glory,
  • 22 new battle plans from small games all the way up to epic battles between the games biggest characters.
  • 6 new ‘Pitched Battle’ scenarios
  • Multi-player and team play and of course,
  • full points values for every Warscroll in Age of Sigmar.

Yup. That was a good podcast. Got me really psyched for the book. I had hoped points would be released free online but oh well this is good too.

Already posted the pic in a different thread, but it belongs here nevertheless...

P.S. Excited about the news too, both campaign system and competitive (read: tournament) rules are good news for me.

I've come to be a bit more reserved about it. Rumors are now starting to sound that the match play system uses the same core rules and FAQs, and I have a hard time seeing this game as playable with saves that stack up to invincibility, infinite recursive summoning, large models that can charge backwards but cannot turn around, models crawling on each others bases, Laser guided cannonballs sniping individual heroes out of melee, etc.

I mean, it's not the biggest problems, supplemental community rules packs and/or local scene house rules will still cover things, but I was kind of hoping that such wouldn't be necessary after the GC was out. *shrug*

Strange. The podcast said that there would be summoning restrictions. I assumed there'd be comp not just points. I totally agree that adding just points is not very helpful if you care about instant balance with strangers, for exactly the reasons you stated. I guess we'll see.

It seems as though GW is trying to cater for a wide range of needs with this forthcoming expansion. I think that, on paper at least, this is a sensible move. It's also refreshing to see something about narrative gaming, although I'm not sure how much I like the idea of replaying famous battles, I'd rather see more guidance and ideas about how to create narrative campaigns, so I hope that this will be included as well.

It's the narrative element I'd really like to see being enhanced overall. There are issues with the rules, but there were issues with the rules in later editions of Fantasy too, at least for me, so if GW can inspire me by improving Age of Sigmar's narrative elements, I'd be persuaded to give it a go.

This. It's the main point of the new world. The possibilities are endless, I'm happy they have chosen D&D as their main inspiring force (like D&D itself was inspired by the Scandinavian mythology, not mentioning Indian one, for example). But you have yet some inspiration anyway, I'd say the Balance of Power and Grand Alliances do the trick the best.

I'm mostly excited for a points to give a reason to take regular rank-and-file over their elite counterparts. You may as well take 1 wound elite troops like Grave Guard or Temple Guard If you count wounds as many unofficial systems promote right now.

Off topic: I love your Konrad's avatar image!! looks very cool!

On topic, a campaign of sorts is supposed to begin this June 11th (of which I know nothing more about) and therefore I am left to wonder: Will this event begin with the official points system and tournament rules we need to make this game competitive again?

I hope it does! :D

Maybe they will. The advertisement for the points system is specifically for tournaments and competitive play. Not only that, but they already helped participate in one tournament and then made army bundles based on the top three winning armies to sell. One of which has already "temporarily sold out".

So they've just proven there is money in the tournament scene, especially when they participate.
