Ooh aar me hearties

Hi there. I'm Ash and I'm new to the forum. I'm collecting and painting VC to make my first ever army. While I did collect and paint in my youth in the distant mists of time I only ever remember playing one battle and it wasn't a painted army. This looks like a chatty well used forum and so I thought I would give it a go.

I'm looking for some advice. I want to make my army pirate themed but I didn't start painting and collecting in that vein. So far I have painted 9 skellie spearman and 13 zombies. I don't really want to start converting and reprinting what I have already done. I have another twenty zombies already assembled and same requirement there too. Any credible ways to make the rest of the units a bit nautical without redoing what I have already completed? I thought if I mixed the yet to be painted models and existing ones but added small cosmetic touches to the newly painted ones then this would be more credible than the new ones all being pirates etc. I'm thinking of adding barnacles or seaweed to the new ones.

Any idea on how I would do this or other ideas? Thanks!

Welcome to the forum buddy!! I love pirate themed armies and trust me, there are a few on here (I believe in Santawraiths Plog you can find some, although it's ... 250+ pages so it may take a while lol). Check out non GW based models. I know Reaper mini's has a ton of models you can use (Shark men for Crypt Horrors, A wierd pirateship lady thats really cool for a vamp or banshee) Also, Hordes by privateer press has some undead pirates although that may be a super exppensive route (I think they're like $30 for 10). There are a ton of ways to make an army like this so don't get intimidated by the work that may have to be put into it!

Greetings, Ash! Enjoy your stay here, and yes, it is a great forum. And if you want to use a very pirate themed force, there is a Zombie Pirate Army Book project in the User Projects Archive with some rules for Zombie Pirates. Not many, though, as the project collapsed, but still, there's some, and at last a different theme (as in, really different).

Thanks all for the warm welcome! I'm building a small 1000 point army to start with. The army list is elsewhere but think this is pretty much correct. 20 zombies with bearer and musician, 20 skeletons with spears - full command group, 2 cairn wraiths with tomb banshee, 10 dire wolves and ten grave guard. Originally my list had a Vampire Lord with additional vampire hero with very little equipment to have full quota of vamps I could but in retrospect I think it would be better to bolster my troops and swap the second vamp for a necromancer instead. Yet to decide how that will affect my final list though.
Like I said what I have so far is not so piratey. 13 of be zombies are painted with a few colour schemes but the most predominant one has a green- bluish skin tone (I think 8 of them). They will be called 'The Drowned' and are the corpses my general dregged from the quays when first building his force along with others he captured that he force drowned ie. made to walk the plank. I plan to model seaweed on the bodies of remaining seven (will try small pieces of paper soaked in kids craft PVA glue) After time I will take the non-blue green ones and add to a separate unit while all new entrants will have seaweed modelled on them with the blue green colour scheme. After time hopefully the unit will be big enough that those zombies with the right colours and seaweed will predominate.

PS. Corien I have seen the Reaper piratey ship figurehead lady and agree she is awesome! I will acquire her as a tomb banshee substitute but as want to game in a GW store I want to have a compliant model to hand too. I was thinking of modelling a sea siren based on one of GW's tomb banshee models
