In early fluff it was green, but I'm pretty sure they've changed it to a purplish red, no doubt because it contrasts a lot better than green on green.. Will look for references!
Thank you was just wanting to know I was right and they do not bleed pale green. Much like a plant would which led to me explaining milk plants who bleed a milky white.
Well they reproduce asexually. In the 7th ed book it says something about the spores from the stars (something like that). 40K orks reproduce via a symbiotic relationship with fungi (eww, don't wanna know) the fact that they have bellybuttons does somewhat clue to them being mammals.. But if they use hemoglobin (that contains iron) to transport oxygen their blood would turn red.. The last part is speculations though..
The best explanation is as I said earlier that it is a lot easier to paint and looks waay better.. People wont question a blade with red on it but green or some other funky colour and they look at you wierd.. The 'eavy metal team got tired having to explain what they were painting
