When trying to send a PM I get this come up on my screen -

Hey Mark,

Looks like we had this error before. I suggest not talking to people that used to live in Barrow. Sounds like a haunted place to live, and quite likely Sirhair is a ghost. Also, it is well known that ghosts love Colin Dexter.

This issue has reared it's ugly head before. What is happening is the database has been told to use Swedish language rules to coallate text. What this means in layman's terms is there's an offending special character in your reply that the system is choking on.

Now, as to why the database was setup to collate in Swedish I have no idea. I don't think DoN does either. It should probably be changed, but that is a large change that should be tested.

I could grab a copy of the DB and do the SQL on it if DoN wanted. It would need testing though (honestly, I have never tried to change collation mid stream but it can be done.).

@Darv: It's not the PM system. It's the text in the message. The database system is having an issue with the characters themselves. It would likely be the same error if posted in a thread.

Hmm. So Malochai is trying to post some bad characters? Perhaps like Mandarin characters or some unrecognised symbol? (Like a heart or a copyright symbol etc.) I can't think what it would be. Perhaps Malochai could try and describe what he was trying to send in case there is anything like that in the PM? (He could always PM it to Grish if he doesn't want it to be public!)

Nothing particularly private ...

We're just talking about books, exams, Waterstones, Barrow, music and small progress on his WH army. I can't see any symbols that are out of the norm ... It obviously has to be my part of the message, because Siri's came through without a problem ... This is my reply :

There is a problem with that bit, because I tried posting it here. I may try posting it paragraph by paragraph, see if I can identify the problem paragraph ... If you mods don't mind?

In SQL, <>?;# and more are special characters.

Test >_<
Test ;
Test ?
Test ~

The way to test is putting it up a paragraph at a time. Then when it crashes, you know the paragraph, and can trouble shoot from there.

Do you have a language other than english setup? Character codes are interesting things... especially Unicode

Never heard of it, but would you recommend it? What’s the blurb? I quite enjoy the Morse TV series; never read the books ... Probably won’t. I don’t think it’s my kind of book. Well, I know you can’t read to much! But most people I know would disagree. Fools that they are!

They were OK, nothing special. Especially the last maths one. Hated it, but not too worried, as I have my A guaranteed. Doesn’t bother me anymore :D

Don’t evil-glare-smiley Waterstones! I have a relatively small backlog because of how quickly I’m reading them now I have so much free time. Although I do have the book of the new Red Riding Hood to read ... You know, the new film version? I THINK the book came first?

It was about the iPod shuffle, I think ... I listen to music everyday, or pretty much anyway, now, but I didn’t back then. Now I’d hate to live without my music :O And hahah, I don’t have lyrics stuck in my head ...

It should change! How much progress have you made today? Quite a bit, I hope xD I got white spray today, and tomorrow I’m thinking I’m going to be painting. I have 20 GG to do, and I think I know how I’m going to do their red cloth ...

Then post it all in one thread entry, then post it as a PM.

What you've done is typed it into a word processing program, then copied/pasted it into here.

It's not quite the same as what you did originally, which is type it directly into here.

Maybe it won't be recreated, and maybe it will be.

I'm a ghost? That explains many things. Heh. Although this Sirhair character sounds a tad suspicious. I do love Colin Dexter, one of the best authors I have ever had the pleasure of reading.

Received his PM, so all is back to normal.
