You guys seen this scale picture of Nagash? He's huge! Bigger than I expected:

and yes, I have seen that. it's the main reason i said screw it, flipped the table, and preordered him.
Lol, yeah I hear that. Pretty much can't not have him. This has to be one of the coolest models they've ever done. Big 180 from the original, one of the worst models they ever done.

What I love is it looks like Nagash is generating buzz with the 40k guys. Getting some of them to come over to fantasy.

Most of the buzz I've seen from 40K players is using him as a Dark Elder Wraithknight or C'Tan. The armour is very reminiscent of DE.

I agree with you. And I'm not saying GW is doing everything right. Lord Marcus makes a good point about Tom Kirby's forward too. But they aren't doing everything wrong either.

Oh, I agree. There's a reason they've survived despite their ever-rising pricing structure and constant criticism -- no one does what GW does better than GW in my opinion. I'm all for the free market, and, like I stated earlier in the thread, I think Nagash is reasonably priced for what he is, but being a working-man, I'm prone to a little grumbling on prices overall sometimes. :)

That model is just huge. Truly befitting the Supreme Lord of Undeath, and something I would pay full price for.

My sentiments, after seeing the scale pic with the skellie. I kind of prefer the pose in the concept art though, versus the model's floating fowards look (concept art in new WD)

I was on the other end when I saw him too. But, I pre-ordered mine anyway, I've waited awhile and now this great model appears. My VC army has grown so much in the past few years and to finally get this (bite my arm because of the price) however, I did buy a few of the DE models when they came out, $60 US for 10 plastic witches. I have a question, someone stated that his rules are coming in the box? So we don't need to buy the book set? Thanks

I started to play and cpllect warhammer for so long man....but i don't belive the hype anymore and it takes about 10 sec on wikipedia to understsand the GW marketing policy. They are insane.
Than you go to the new site and they list stuff for price FFS!!!!!
i love the game but GW lost me 5 years ago, i have a VC and BA 40k army now and the only thing i bought from gw shop are 2 brushes, some colors from indipendent reseller and the TG from Wayland games.
the cast and plastic might be better, but when the first 3d printer got commercialised the 1st thought of use was copyn fuckin gw miniatures...
i will not buy nagash pre-order,i will not buy it later and please, let me know when the first copy comes out so i can support the chinese who do all the job anyway.
65£ for a model i s insane,is plastic,cool or not,is fucking plastic. mantic sale for half price better mini,so....

I would be very interested to know what the actual production costs for a model are. How much money goes into the design process? How much is the sculptor paid? (I hope they also make residuals off their work, but that's probably too much to ask.) How expensive is it to prepare the model for being molded, and then to make the mold? What are the materials and production costs? (There are almost certainly more materials involved in casting than the material being cast.)

Historically, conventional wisdom was that it was relatively inexpensive to make molds for metal models (which is why smaller companies focus more heavily on metal), while plastics, though cheaper to make, required a massive initial investment for molding and infrastructure. I never saw any numbers to bear any of that up, but the decisions made by GW, Privateer, Ral Partha, and others over the years seem to support the theory.

Today, with computer modeling and 3d printing, I have absolutely no idea. We can theorize based on the context of how other models are priced, but without actual data, it's all just speculation.

I agree with Skittelz1981 100%, people that know nothing about warhammer and walk past the shop and see some cool looking models will keep walking when they find out the price, im buying less and less models from GW because the price of stuff is starting to get out of control. Its got to the point where i dont want my girl friend to know how much im paying. Its just a plastic model and i hope GW are keeping you guys happy because you wont find many new people taking it up.

Aren't the recasted minis typically of a very brittle and hard, inflexible resin? I'm curious if GW is making some sculpting decisions based on that since all the big pricey kits coming out for VC seem to be based very precariously like Nagash being tethered to the ground with thin spirit hosts and the big mount for the multi-kit is balancing on its tail.

there is also the fact that GW has a production facility in house, and thus costs are cheaper as they are internalized and they are not paying the associated fee's with contracting to a third party manufacturing plant.

From wikipedia :

In the 25 years since the first edition of their flagship game Warhammer Fantasy Battle, the cost of some like-for-like game components have risen steeply. For example, a metal "Goblin Fanatic" miniature has increased from 40p[12] to £2.67,[13] an increase of 567.5%. In early 2008, Playthings magazine reported that retailers selling Games Workshop's products had seen a reduction in sales due to market saturation and "more importantly...the price increases."[14]

did any salary increased of 567,5% anywhere but the chief and stock market assholes?

plus, they r selling less at more, same shit that apple does, love the game, hate the gw,buy from smaller companies at less.
is just the chinese cusin that work in the factory on the other side of the street anyways...

1. "They list stuff for price." They are the Manufacturer, it is mostly in their right to charge RRP on their website. I do think it is odd that they don't have sales though.

2. Wayland games is slow and horrible about correct stock levels, I refuse to buy from them now.

3. 3d printers are a long way away from the level of detail of GW cast plastics, especially since they still have texture and smoothness issues.

4. The chinese do not do the job, GW's manufacturing plant is adjacent to warhammer world, their headquarters in Nottingham.

5. The price is hefty, that is true, but as I pointed out earlier it is on target as being the same price as some of their other large scale kits.

No, but the costs associated with the move-in of the manufacturing plant have to have been considered. Furthermore, Kirby has a massive share of the company, and wanted higher dividends.

Keep in mind public companies stocks are held by everyday people too. My grandmother got herself out of financial ruin my grandfather unintentionally caused (he has since passed) and she is living with her housing and medical needs met without encumbering her family (which was very important to her) because of her sticking a little money under the mattress and then investing in the stock market wisely. So not all stock market people are predatory, there are every day people investing in companies hoping to get a return on that investment.

On the matter of cost, I had heard at one point that the machines to produce the plastic models are in the tens of millions of dollars and that getting a mold created is 100k range. So, if true, very hefty up front costs. I don't know what the sculptors get paid.

The high end machines are expensive, but not in 10s of millions I would think.

The guy who runs proxiemodels picked up an older one and is using it in his garage.

my vc books says "printed in china" and an average 90% of the plastic of this world is made in china.
However they are tryn to make it an elite game every year more, and the reason why i'm pissed i cause i love the game, but i can't get in shit every 3-4 years cause they change 4 pages of rulebook,3 of codex and i gotta buy everythin all over again.
However i'm doing some research to see what is the average price of such big miniature before my final verdict, but that gw is overpriced is enough to look around a bit, because so far, mantic games,is better, gamezone, same same and so on.
i'm a concerned consumer,i see what they r doing at the 40k and i don't like it one bit.

They are a company. They exist to make money. They are not doing it wisely, and are thus shafting the consumer to keep revenue up instead of making changes. we have to deal with that.

Where did you get the 90% figure, may I ask?

Further, there is photographic evidence that GW has their manufacturing plant attached to their HQ.

@ Lord Marcus: I thought GW had made the transition over to 3D printing their plastikits and that this is the reason why newer kits have been able to be so much more detailed.

Not as I know it. From what I have heard they are using CAD technology to "sculpt" the mini's. and then laser etching the tools that will produce them.

Yeah I've certainly seen the CAD tech. The new massively detailed kits are one of the reasons I'm looking forward to new Bretonnian stuff (Blood Knight/Swane conversions). Although one of my friends tells me there are rumours afoot that they might be doing away with Bretonnians and rolling them into the Empire to create a single "Armies of Men" book... I'm not sure I totally believe that. GW would make more money from selling books individually at the very least...
