Having a couple of practise games on Monday with a mate for an event over the summer (Midlands Open in the UK) and I've decided to give VC a go. Now one of the things which has put me off the Counts is the amount of models you need, but realisticly how many do you need for raising? I know a lot of it depends on your list but a 'rough' figure.

20-40 zombies should be enough unless you're really planning to spam them.

If you're playing with the skel/ghoul bloodlines, and you should be, then you'll need another 20 or so skels/ghouls too.

That seems about right. I lost both my games but that I didn't raise 'that' many things but I think it's more because I was trying to be offensive with the Lore of Vamps rather than using it as a supporting lore

Yeah the VC lore is not really best used that way. It is designed with supporting the VC units in mind. If you want to be offensive I would suggest you perhaps take Forbidden Lore and choose Metal / Fire etc.

On the other hand if you do start using the Vampire Lord more supportively via Vanhels etc (just don't go overboard spamming), you should find the battles a bit easier.

these numbers are pretty accurate. I got a lucky break, playing Ogres and Vampires, as I use my Gnoblars as zombies and have an extra 40 or so to go with my already numerous horde. So I can field over 100 zombies if I really want to now....

I've only once summoned more than 40, and that was a 'WTF' moment that we both just sat back and looked at the Ironbreakers struggling against oh, 60 Zombies that charged from the back. It was pretty epic.

But in all honesty, have ten to twenty extra models of whatever 'Master' power you're focusing on, and at the most 40 zombies onhand for friendly games. If you need any more than that, your opponent probably doesn't think you're very nice anymore. :)

Well I think part of the problem was that I fancied trying out the Ninja Lord (9" scouting Lord with Sword of Striking, Walking Death, and Carstein Ring) for a Laugh. First game he got battered by a Keeper of Secrets and next game he mistcast and doubled oned!

On the other hand if you do start using the Vampire Lord more supportively via Vanhels etc (just don't go overbaord spamming), you should find the battles a bit easier.

I think I need to learn how all the support units work together as I think that's the key to Vamps. It also didn't help that all the terrain scattered into the side of the board I ended up having.

We have a couple units to help with Terrain; Black Knights and Wraiths. Both excellent.

Vamps are indeed a combined army, and finding their balance is key as well. Once you have that balance I find they're a very forgiving army.

20-40 zombies should be plenty. Plus I'd say 15-20 for skellies/ghouls if you take the blood line power.

Plus with zombies/skellies you can always model the extras as emerging from the grave, just get some extra bases and use up all those bits! It'll save you some money. Personally, from a thematic point of a view, I recommend all your "starting" zombies and skeletons should be "full bodied" just as if they had been raised well before battle. It looks better, and it also really helps sell the "raised" feel of the new stuff.

Though if you play at 3k+ you may want to add A LOT more than what has been recommended, just to warn you.

Though, locally (especially in casual games) we tend to use dice to represent the extra. If we need to check for charges we just place some on that side to see if they'd hit. However while in tournaments some might be ok with that, I would not count on it.
