So now that the FAQs are out and so is the rule book and everyone has had chance to have a good look through them, what rare choices are looking like the best? I cant really decide what i want to use and seeing as all the models for them cost a fair amount of money i want to get the best ones possible. Im looking at the black coach, can this now be fully buffed up on turn one using 6 dice from the pool? with the new skirmish rules are wraiths as good as they were? What about blood knights now that they dont neccecarily have to automatically charge? With the nerf to terror and all the big blocks that were gonna see is the varghulf now weaker than the other choices? all input will be greatly appreciated, thanks.

All 4 will be viable just like before, and like before they all have there drawbacks

Wraiths
- Great against armies with limited magical attacks
- Become a big target for magic.

Vargaulf
- Gains Thunderstop
- Loses ability to use regen save on crumbling, can lose regen save via 1 flaming attack.

Blood Knights
- Tier 1 Cavalry. Might actually kill a nice chunk of giant blocks on 1st turn, cant be baited as easily
- Expensive! Regen banner no longer viable, less army points available to invest in a Blood Drinker vampire.

Black Coach
- Will suckup dice much more quickly so it gains Etheral and Flying Quicker.
- Still only has so much hitting power, after the 1st round is a sitting duck to crumble as the enemy will be fighting your skel/ghouls/gg head on.

2 vargaulfs for me, use them as support for black knights charging, nvr send in alone, unless they r killing squishy elves :suck:

2 vargys for me.

I use them as a pair to hammer engaged units or individualy to hunt small units/warmachines/wizards.

unless they die turn 1 they usualy preform really well.

In larger games (2500+) Id run a black coach as well, but I dont own one.
Wraiths will be staying on the shelf for 8th. Lost them too many times to anvil of dooms and other i-dont-need-los-to-nuke-your-t3-pointsink shenanigans

Varghulf and 5 Blood Knights with probably the Banner of Strigos.

A ridiculously points-heavy unit - don't care; I like the models and if they go off they will SERIOUSLY go off.

Blood Knights/Wraiths - Haven't tried them out in 8th yet so I can't give any input.

Vargaulf - Used twice so far but I was unable to get him into combat first game lost him in a crumble role when my general died second game was caught in a cross fire between skinks and terradons.

Black Coach - It is insane how fast this gets powered up, when I charged on turn two the Black Coach had almost all it's powers only thing lacking was flying which it had by turn three.

Now the bad news, this is one hungry dice eating beast I was already rolling low for the amount of casting dice and The Coach was averaging two power dice per magic phase so I lost what little advantage I had in casting dice.

In fact my friend was shocked on how many dice it was eating and how fast it powered up that He asked me if I was doing it right.

blood knights Are FTW they still are very viable and can crush most rank and file dudes and they are actually a good horde killer from the flank if you invest in the blood drinker vamp they are very hard to kill.

Vargulfs are supposed to be very good now with their really big charge range they may be able to get a charge off turn one. and thunder stomp is quite effective.

The black coach seems like an interesting idea with its ability to get its powers very early in the game.

wraiths will probably be not worth it in higher point games but in lower point games (1000-1500) I can see them becoming quite a nuisance for your opponent.

But in 8th ed I think its going to be our heroes that save us we have to think more into making our troop more reliable.

Not to derail the thread or anything , but if you meant you lost a vargy due to a crumble roll not via combat res in cc but to losing your general ya played it a bit wrong there. the vargy, and the coach, have the vampire special rule, and as such are immune to crumbling as a result of losing the general. =]

i really like the blood knights but i'm not really sure about this setup..

imagine you charge a full infantry block and suppose your Blood knights are full size:

your vampire often attacks first (initiative 6 or 7, or at the same time as elven elite troops) .... you kill something of course but you don't heal nothing because you are at 100%
Then you have blood knight's initiative 4 which is good but you seriously risk (you also risk to be challenged by the unit's champion and lose attack to the ranks) to be smashed out by the infantry or by an enemy hero.

Of course if you survive with at least 1 knight you can revive them using the blood drinker but it's very risky :frown:

You absolutely have to flank, attack small units or Monster's infantry or do multiple charges using Vanhel's dance.

Give your Vamp Lord the Accursed Armor. His init now drops to 4 and he can heal back wounds that were done at I 4 or higher. :)

I own Two Varghulfs, 10 Wraiths + 2/3 Banshees, and a Black Coach.

so of course I'll be using those. ;) But preference dictates I use Varghulfs and my Wraiths before the Coach, I just don't like chariots. :( and my Fluff also dictates Varghulfs, they -are- the Vampiric bodyguards of my Lahmian mistresses after all. :) I need more, come to think of it....
