Good good. I should hope most of you have already started (and are near finishing...) because the idea was to give you plenty of time (ie: when I opened the thread till when I close entrance) so you could write. After all, it takes time!

Darvy I hate to do this, but I just haven't had time and then when I do start nothing seems to work. I'm going to have to drop out of this :(

I do hope this will be the only drop-out... don't worry, Malochai, real-life comes first. (Well, except for me anyways.) If you do find time just say so. The entries won't be needed for at least a couple of weeks anyway.

@ Boo: I'm looking forward to it.

When is a guideline date that we have tl be done by, I don't actually have a computer right now, and typing 3000 words on an iPhone seems a very daubing task..

Well it depends when the GB is all done and dusted. Not for at least two weeks, I'd say.

K, this is going to be a rush for me *sigh*.. I'll still get it done, don't want to let you all miss out on my awoke story xD

The Golden Bat has finished... and the Sable Scroll will soon begin!

A fixed date for the closing of new entrants and the opening for the entries will soon be released, but to give you a general figure, it will be within the next couple of weeks, so if you haven't finished (egad!) get writing!

Meanwhile, there is still time for new entrants (although you'd have to write like a beast, I may give special permissions for later entries there) so sign up quick before it's too late! New entrants will be barred from entry before the official entry-opening so as to avoid last-minute copy-and-paste cheaters, so you really don't have long to join up! If you want to take part, post here or PM me before it's too late!

Write like a beast??? I haven't even started yet!!! :clown: I'm starting tomorrow anyways, don't worry, I'll get it done

Well to be honest if you really sat down and gave it a solid tanking it would be fine. It's only meant to be a short story not a whole novel, and whilst there's a maximum word-count, you can write as little as you wish... I personally will not be aiming for the top-end of the word limit, but somewhere nicely in the middle.

Sanai's story submission:
I am a guardsman
I have a lasgun
He is a marine
He has a bolter
My lasgun goes pew pew
His bolter roars
He stays standing, I fall.....

Lol not my real submission :)

I thought lasguns went 'freem'.. This is a REVALATION:happy:

EDIT: I've started writing, mine's inspired by enemy at the gates, anyone know that?

Computer crash!:swear: Good thing I know the story by heart almost so I think I can type it out in time but darn it it'll never be as good. Curse myself for not putting it to my external HD whilst backing up.

@ Mannfred; enemy at the gates was a pretty good movie IMO. Lots of people disliked it as it was unrealistic well yeah it was but the overall story was good and in Soviet Russia any movie with hero is good.

Unrealistic??? The movie is based on a book, which is a diary! It's goddam historically perfect, that's what really happened

To be honest they did change a lot in the movie adaptation, for instance Vassili and Tania did not end up being happy together. After the battle they both thought the other had died. When Tania found him a few years later he was already married to another woman and her being Jewish in Soviet Russia...well..she wasn't that popular anymore *understatement*

There's also some controversy about the "duel" between Vassili Zaitsev and Konig as it's all based on Vassili's account. The German's claimed it was a man named Koenig and not Konig who got shot down. Though Vassili claimed to have found papers that identified the man as teh head of a Berlin sniper school these papers were never published (the sniper rifle that supposedly belonged to Konig can be seen in a museum in Moscow to this day). It was the Soviet government that identified the man as Konig whilst even Vassili was silent about whether or not it was actually Konig.
The duel itself also lasted for a number of days instead of a few hours.

A German-Russian writer who played as an extra in the film also criticized it for it's very unrealistic portrayal of Soviet soldiers. He tried to persuade the movie director to change some details but to no avail. The Stalingrad Veterans guild even tried to ban the movie!
And lets not even begin about all the Soviet Jews that really weren't welcome to fight as privates amongst the Red Army. They were tolerated at most.

Remember that this story has been used as Soviet propaganda for years and what really happened we will never know for certain. Add to that the touch of a director and his team and it's even one more step removed from the truth.

Just my two cents.;) It is an interesting story though and I did like the movie despite it's inaccuracies.

Yeh, sorry what I meant was the book isn't unrealistic. I agree that there are certain points which arendebated but the entire thing isn't unbelievable, which is why I have changed it into 40k. Completely unbelievable now :clown:

The movie on the other hand.. Is a very good movie, but nothing else, its completely unrealistic, yes.

When do we have to hand these stories in?? According to previous fates we've reach the deadline some time ago. My story is sitting around gathering dust..

Editing time!! xD

Ok, time to announce an official date, methinks:

[mod]Entry opening begins on the 18th September. It will remain open for a little while after to make sure everyone can get on to post up their entries. Instructions for the entry process will follow shortly.[/mod]

I'm having to rethink a couple of things regarding voting etc. due to recent conversations concerning the Golden Bat, but more info on that later. There will be a full forum announcement this Saturday about the entry opening.

The competition is now officially

[mod] Closed [/mod]

for new entries. Please see the voting & entry process thread for details on how the competition will run. You can still ask any questions in this thread if you need to, but entrants will no longer be accepted. PM if you have any issues/problems etc.

Good luck!

~ Darvy

EDIT: Not problems as such, just matters concerning confidentiality of posters etc. to keep things fair. It's too late for it now because of the system I've used; but I will have to refrain from entering to avoid any potential bias. :( I'll post up my story separately though.

ah what the heck, it's been ages since I've written fiction(I used a ...pencil and legal pad). Count me in. No pun intended. :konrad:

Sorry, the competition is closed for new entries... I had hoped this would be made clear by the big red banner. Sorry about that.

LoL...that will teach me to not just read the rules and hit reply. :) G'luck all. I'm looking forward to some great short stories.
