I just read that when "beasts" attack a warmachine, they count as "3 models" when figuring out how many can attack the warmachine, which means that only two d. wolfs can attack a wm at one time.

Is this correct?

Is so, an entrenched Dwarf WM can easily fight off dire wolves.

Correct BRB p. 110.. and they usually do.

The important thing is if their in combat they cant shoot.

Unfortunately true. I'm not sure why you would charge Dire Wolves at Dwarf warmachines though. Maybe Empire or Bret ones but Dwarfen of Elvish contraptions are a poor target. It doesn't matter that you can't get shot, you'll still die. I guess maybe you could hope to stop it shooting next turn if you hold in CC.

This is unfortunate, I don't know why they did not make it that cav/beasts count as 2 models, like it was in 6th.

Against dwarfs it is tough.

Against HE its OK, they only have 2 crew and don't have saves against S4 of wolves on the charge.

I think 5 Wolves can eventually beat 2 HE crewmen. Assuming he passes fear, 2 HE crew man deal 2*8/9*0.5 = 8/9 wounds (ie. kill one wolf). Wolves deal 2*0.5*2/3 = 2/3 crew dead.

On the second turn HE kill one more wolf and wolves will on average, have killed one HE crew.

So third round of combat sees 3 wolves vs 1 HE. My money is on the wolves. :)
