So, how do I build myself a hellsteed ?!

Hey guys!

So I really want a hellsteed riding baby vampire.

I'll run him.

Vampire:
Lv 1(shadow), Heavy Armour, shield, Dragonhelm, Dawnstone, Lance, Quick blood, Hellsteed.

But I don't know how to build him.

So far I got my eyes on Archaon and his beast of a horse. Just changing his head, maybe swaping for a lance and then removing all chaos icons and spiky bits from the model.

But the problem is finding a pair of suitable wings, so anyone got any ideas for what I can use?

Or maybe anyone got a better model to base it all on.

Help would be great!

the vargheist wings would do the trick. or special order the wings off the dark elf pegasus.

Mine was a bretonnian horse done to match my army.

But the way archons horse is rearing back it would make a impressive hellsteed. If you get this done I wanna see pictures. Sounds like a great conversion.

To be honest I intended to use the base Archaon came with, since there really isn't an official base for the hellsteed.

I don't think anyone would argue with me over it ^^. Just seems abit to hard to fit him on a cav base ^^

I usually recommend the 40mm base as it is what Pegasus knights are on. Which is basically kinda what a hellsteed is. Only due to it not having a real base size. I agree with the calvery base.

Though a 50mm works too.

Honestly if he is on a 50mm base he could swing both as a hellsteed and a abbysal terror. Might add some alternative fielding.

Hmmm you could enter him in the abbysall terror challenge if you wanted then too. HMMMMMMMM

Well, you can stick your Hellsteed in a unit of knights, so a normal cav base might be the best option for conformity, however you'll have a hard time fitting a winged steed with a vampire on a normal cav base, which would bring us to the 40mm square base, which does not rank up very well with normal cav. This brings us to the 50mm square base, which would fit well with normal cavalry, offers a lot of space for you to model your hellsteed, BUT the hellsteed is not a monster and thus should not be placed on a base this large... I'm at a loss here honestly. Probably the biggest option is best for modelling and most opponents won't mind a larger base. It's the smaller ones everyone struggles with for a reason

For the modelling aspect I suggest the Dark Elf pegasus wings that look a bit bat-like. They might be too small for archaons steed though, so you should consider fitting them on a slightly bulked up normal one.

Yea the base is a problem, but it feels like the least of my problems

The wings are a far bigger one! I've been looking at the dark pegasus wings, but like you I also fear that they will be to small for archaons steed.

So I took a look in the "wings" section at the GW website, and I figured that the "winged nightmare" wings might be a better choice.

Now I need to fish for some money. I wonder how many beers I would have to sac for this

Yea that's right, but won't they be a bit to big? I don't have either model at hand so
I will be getting archaon soon thought, since I just got a job, the it will be easier to judge

Yea the gargoyle wings should be good for smaller steeds, but isn't archaons a bit bigger ?

Not as spread wide as the Balrog, not as small as the 'Nid wings. He's a bigger model and I'd bet that's the best fit you're gunna get for Archaon's giant mount.

There's a Varghulf conversion somebody did where they put those wings on it. I've been hunting high and low trying to find a pic so you could have an idea of how the size looked, but I'm not having much luck. Anybody else seen that Varghulf someplace?

Right wings, wrong conversion. But that one gives the right idea, i'm sure. That'd be the wings I'd go with. Hope they're what you're looking for!

Personally I used a Pegasus from a Bret. peg knight sprue.

I kept the feathery wings because i felt bat wings looked silly.

Added some part from the dragon prince sprue to make it match my Blood knights and put a zombie dragon rider on top..

In order to make him fit in my cavalry units I just piled a heap of skeleton parts on the base and re-arranged the wings to make him fit.

Was easy even for a noob-converter like me and it looks the part.

i think i know which conversion is intended. wings on the gw varghulf, spread out upwards, sitting on rocks or some building/ruins. pretty sure it's among the finished army section in this site. awesome model and work, but many didn't like it cuz vargs don't fly...

If you don't mind a bit of modification to add the shield and helm, Mantic's Vampire Lord of Undead Pegasus is a pretty good match for what you want.

Unfortunately, the BoW video of it's down, but it's a rather nice one for a hellsteed. You might want to rebase it so you can add some weight under it since the thin & flat one that came with mine wasn't quite stable.
