I finally bought the book Dracula, it was on sale at the University Bookstore in Madison. Now that I have my degree, I have some more time to read, so I felt like buying something a little more high class than non-fiction or warhammer books... as it's been a while since I actually read something that's considered a "classic". I don't count Hemmingway, as Hemmingway is garbage... but the last "classic" piece of literature I read was Dante's Inferno.

It's funny as I've been a long time VC player, despite a sabbatical, and yet I haven't read this classic piece of literature... and it's the book that a lot of today's portrayal of vampires is based.

It does feel good to be able to read, and just read for fun...

A lot of today's protrayal is based on? Y halo thar faglight.

I'm unsure what this means? I do hope however it is not a negative reference to homosexuality as we take a very poor view of that on CN.

@ Swiss - I've just realised I have never read the book myself........that's terrible. I'm going to have to get it now.

I believe that Faglight = Twilight and the less manly depiction of Vampires that it holds, what with the sparkles, love and all that..

:vampire2:

You guys better start reading... that's unbelievable!!! :D

Re: Twilight - yeah, garbage... my wife tried to make me watch it... three times... and I fell asleep... ALL THREE TIMES!!

So you're saying we've found a cure for insomnia...

Ah yes, the damn glitterpire. I can't remember the last time I swore so much at a film.........I mean he was twinkling in bloody sunlight!! What kind of self respecting predator of the night would twinkle like a bloody fairy?

Suffice to say its banned in my house, and luckily my missus has the same views on the subject.

I have never seen or read Twilight and never, ever plan to. This thread gives me no encouragement either, which can only be for the good, my brain has enough shite inside as it is.

I read Big D. when I was 16, the lovely (noir-clad) librarian at my school lent me hers. She was lovely. Aaah.... *drifts off* *comes back* Sorry. I was very intrigued with the various characters' viewpoints, even if the blood & guts were a bit thin on the ground. I don't doubt there's some more subtle traits that I've missed so I'll doubtless give it another go at some point.

Incidentally I read the other day that there's a film of Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu's Carmilla (1871) coming out later this year, which should be interesting in several ways, and will doubtless ruin several more years of progress in equality & gender representation. Carmilla, incidentally, is the most likely source of the name 'von Carstein,' derived from the Karnstein family of whom Carmilla is, er, descended.

EDIT: I just noticed we have a member quite familiar with the young lady...

I would be quite interested in seeing a movie version of Carmilla.. I would hope that they do it well, but you can never tell when female vampires are the subject matter.. though as corny as it is, Hammer Horror's The Vampire Lovers still has a place close to my heart :D

And come on guys, are we still dealing with the same 'in the closet' issues when it comes to Twilight?? It's a throw away style movie, for sure, I should know, I own it on dvd. By throwaway, I mean I disengaged my brain before I watched it, but that is no different to when I went to the cinema last week with the gf to watch GI Joe: The Rise of the Cobra. Switched off the brain, enjoyed the eye candy and explosions, didn't pay too close attention to the plot, and enjoyed it. Funnily, it was my gf that wanted to see it, I wanted to see Public Enemies instead, and she ended up liking GI Joe less than she expected, and I liked it more than I expected. But for some reason, though Twilight is just as brain dead as GI Joe, it's attracted alot more hate and negativity.

Seriously, Twilight is no more drival than Lesbian Vampire Killers, they are both drival. LVK just has more eye candy and naked flesh than the other does, so it's justified for being brain dead, but to me, both have a place in terms of movies to watch with the brain switched off, and some days, you really need those types of movies to watch!

I'm curious, has anyone given the TV series based on the Sookie Stackhouse books, True Blood, a go? I'm kind of surprised that no one has mentioned it, as it roughly, and very roughly, falls into the same sort of genre as the Twilight series. Though is far, far, far superior. Actually, have to say it's really nothing like Twilight, alot more like the Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter series of books. It's a brilliant show that I would highly recommend. Check out the following link for the opening credits to give you an idea, and pay attention to how cool the theme song is :D

True Blood

Oh Disciple? You would love True Blood. Season One got an R rating not only due to the violence and amount of blood in it, but moreso because of all of the explicit sex scenes in it :D

Anita Blake can also rot along with the Twilight series. :D

I read Bram Stokers masterpiece several times back in high school, and am looking for a fairly priced replacement for it as we speak. I really do love it.

Never seen true blood, but then again, not owning a TV might be the cause of that.

there's only one part in the Twilight movie That I thought was cool at the end on that part where they kill the antagonist where the two guy Vampires grab his arms and the female vampire jumps on him and rips his head off the rest of the movie is Blah.

Hmmmmmm might have to be solitary confinement in a coffin wrapped in silver crosses for you after that comment, Onikaigo. :vampire3:

Just curious, have you ever even tried reading the Anita Blake series, or are you just want for throwing out disparaging remarks like that, without having any basis to them?

Hey, I respect completely it's not everyone's cup of tea, but I think anyone would feel slightly insulted when someone makes a comment like that about a series of books that you have invested alot of time in reading - 17 books so far and counting.

So coffin wrapped in silver crosses for you, and we'll you let you out when you can behave!
