So, I picked up the June issue of White Dwarf Today, and found to my delight, the rules for spearhead, the new free expansion for 40k, which is apparently only available in that issue of white dwarf. Reading through the rules for spearhead, I am very happy with what I see. (I also downloaded the spearhead formations from the GW website).
Basically the way the expansion works, is that it has a different set of table/objective set ups (3 table setups and 3 objective setups). These setups are fought with each player deploying on a short edge of the board, fighting the battle across the length of the board instead of the usual close in battles. I like this idea, as I have become sick of 1# My tanks being in range to shoot from turn 1, making them be weapons platforms instead of actual tanks
2# My tanks getting assaulted so early in normal games.
This will probably enable players to actually maneuver their vehicles around like in real tank battles.
The second part of it is a modified force organisation, in which everything is a 0- normal limit choice, with the option of adding formations called "spearheads". Each spearhead is basically a selection where you put in a specified number of a unit type from your army list, and they gain a special rule or two. These spearheads are all made up of vehicles, but infantry can still be fielded in spearhead games (but arent going to be as useful in some cases as alot of players might just field tanks)
As an imperial guard player, this makes me very, very happy. Also, this free expansion (yaay its free) and the accompanying IG tank releases have inspired me to take up my brush and get back to painting my guardsmen, just when I needed some motivation!
My plan is to now hit the painting table (not literally, that would send guardsmen flying around the room) and paint up all my guardsmen. Once they are painted, I will paint my leman russes, and then reward myself by buying some of the newly released tanks.
Here are some nice pictures of some of the new stuff.
An important note about the new tank kits for the IG- the sponson weapons and hull mounted weapons are designed to just click on or something. Yaaay for interchangeability between games!
Also, Yaaay for GW giving us a free expansion!
Yaaay for new tanks!
Yaaay for tank battles that you can actually maneuver in!
