This thread is for voting on the one of the Special options for the Legion of Nagash - Locust Swarm

Please note: This is not to vote whether they fit in with the theme etc. That is what the discussion in the threads is for.

It is to check and ensure we have created fair rules that are not unbalancing, or there is not something grossly wrong that has been over looked.

This Poll will close on 11/12/09

*Please note the option to retract your vote has been enabled, so if you do change your mind after discussion it is possible to do so.

0-1 Locust Swarm - 35pts per base
Unit size 3+
In the desert of Nehekhara, despite the unforgiving sun, some creatures cling to life. Occasionally, when the rains come down and bring life to the river, vast swarms of Locusts emerge from the ground, drawn by the moisture in the air. These insects are voracious and hungry, and spend their short lives hunting for food along the river, devastating swathes of land. However, unlike in other parts of the Old world, these insects do not die. Foul necromancy from Nagashizzar spreads across the land and infuses these insects with unholy vigour. Flying in front of Nagash’s legions, these swarms spread death and disease, devouring anything they come across.

Droning Horror

Fused with the dark magic of the Supreme Lord of Undeath, the drone of the swarm takes on a horrifying sound that cannot be ignored. It grates on their senses, setting their nerves on edge and even the stoutest warrior hesitates as the swarm bears down on him
Any enemy unit within 6” of a Locus Swarm must pass a Ld test if they wish to fire a missile weapon, or in the case of wizards, if they wish to cast a spell. If failed they cannot ignore the drone of the swarm and suffer a -2 to any to hit roles. In the case of warmachines that fail and do not roll to hit, the player controlling the swarm can choose to make the warmachine player re-roll the artillery dice. This rule also applies to stand and shoot if the swarm charges a unit, however in this case there is no range limitation. Any wizards that fail the test will miscast on double if they roll a double ‘2’ in addition to the normal double ‘1’.
This rule does not affect units that are Immune to Psychology.

They look good to me, but perhaps they should have some kind of limiting factor to their flying movement, much like the VC Bat Swarms? Swarms of small insects can only move so fast after all, despite buzzing around with their wings. :)

While the 10'' Fly move is fluffy and all, that is the very reason why nobody* takes Bat Swarms. So the question now is, fluff or playability?

*Obviously not literally everybody. But the vast majority of VC players fall under this category. I know I myself don't and never will take Bat Swarms as long as they Fly only 10''. Likewise I have never ever seen 7ed Bat Swarms fielded in my LGS for the same reason.

I'm with Todd. The whole reason for taking the swarms would be to interfere with enemy shooting etc. If the swarms are slower than the armies Cav why really would you take them. Plus they would probably get shot to bits before they got there.

I think they should have the normal fly rule.

In regards to flying, many insects are very fast, a Bee for example can fly over 60MPH.

These Locusts have a few advantages over most other Swarms though, namely poisoned attacks and their Droning Horror special rule. With a 20'' flying move they'd be amongst the enemy ranged units on turn 2 by the latest and cause numerous leadership tests due to the size of their bases + being skirmishers (they're on 40mm bases like other Swarms, right?).

Now, admittingly, they do not have the Undead special rule that the Bat Swarms have which lets them cause fear and to be healed through IoN which is a big bonus for the Bats... still, I do think that these Locusts might be a bit too powerful if given the hyper-mobility of regular flight.

It was late summer when I have read the novel Nagash (Time of Legends). The idea of a scarad-like swarm is perfect for the legion of Nagash.:O
