@Borgnine Yeah thanks man, I am definitely going to stick with it. I get a bit better every time I do it, but it's a technique that I've always wanted to master. I hate painting with metallics, especially on tiny scale miniatures with a high level of detail. They clump, dry quickly, don't work with a wet palette very well and are generally unreliable. I also have lots of trouble highlighting them. I don't think it will ever fit into the rank and file of my VCs though, just reserved for characters as it does take a bit longer.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

Virgil Neuberger

The Master took pleasure in breaking Virgil Neuberger, Captain of the Seeingart Guard. He basked in the bliss of destroying the man's sanity. First he took his wife and drained her to dust while he slept peacefully in the bed beside. The cries of anguish as he woke tickled parts of him he thought long dead. Then his children, two young boys, just babes. Not drained, oh no it was the kiss of life that he bestowed upon them. The Master soaked up his pain as he came downstairs to investigate a noise only to find his hell spawn playing in the blood of their guard dog's corpse. The master took everyone he knew and stole their life away until his sanity finally cracked. Virgil raised the knife to plunge it into his own heart, and then The Master saved him. His vengance would make him the most brutal killer in his army, his insanity would make him merciless in his rage and the kiss of death would make him strong and loyal. Not a leader, but a rabid wild dog, a killing machine.

Virgil is painted using all non metallic metal techniques. Dark Sea Blue is the base colour for the metal and Vallejo Model Color White is the highlight. I've used the loaded brush technique along with some glazes for most of it. I'm really happy with the result.

He's on a 20mm square base and I've plugged it into a 40mm round for display. You can hardly see the join. I hope you like it.

@Leithel Beautiful paint job mate. That NMM has turned out really well and the model itself is pretty awesome.

Really nice work.

You really swept everything up with your NMM! Some crazy progress up there ;) I'm not a fan of this particular shade of yellow, as I may have already said, but overall it's very, very awesome! The scenic base is also a pretty addition to the mini, if only that mould line on the gravestone wasn't missed ;) I am looking forward to more of your endeavours with NMM.

Oh I've been quiet but it's not all over. Here is my latest work in progress. This is a mortis engine, or it will be. WIP work on the ethereal tornado, the floating platform and the base still to be finished. Lots of work to go including the slaves, the rider, the basing and the blood... oh there will be blood.

Sorry about the crappy image quality, they're just WIPs, long way to go.

I'm sitting on that vortex too for just this conversion project. I'll be glad to see another take on it before I get to business with mine. Great work so far!

Looks promising! The sand around the edges of the platform really reinforces the feel that it was ripped out of the ground. Can you share your ideas about this project, or is it a secret? ;)

Sorry @Borgnine I missed your response. I don't mind sharing. The top of the platform is going to be filled with the blood of sacrifices with a whirlpool flowing down the center. I've not worked with water effects before so this is a good chance to try it. I'll be using clear resin for the blood and my own blood color mix.

Three slaves, one dead and headless and two upset fells chained on top of the platform and the decrepit, dirty and poorly dressed necromancer holding the skull of the dead man and drinking blood from it while directing the platform.

Skeletons rising from the crack in the earth left by the wake of the ethereal tornado and pulling down Averland henchmen.

It's not as complex as it sounds but there's heaps of new techniques I wanted to try and this project has them all. Airbrushing, OSL, water effects, plasticard cracked earth, pigment weathering and one of my absolute favorite models that I finally bought and have started to paint... that one you'll have to wait for.

Also, thanks heaps for the feedback @Adam_Barrow . I hope that this project won't disappoint, I'm having heaps of fun with it.

i hope it's "my own" - "blood color mix" and not "my own blood" - "color mix".
and to be honest it would not surprise me if it were the second. so much passion on this forum! :vampire1:

@Leithel Your take on a Mortis Engine is looking pretty wicked - I like the ethereal tornado idea with the grim vision of the necromancer atop drinking blood. Really looking forward to seeing your project progress.

HAHA @der vued I hand't though of it that way until I re-read it after your comment. I put myown blood into the paint to add a little "extra flair".

No it's just a mix of colours that I like the result of, really just black wash and red gore, nothing special.

Thanks @Farmer7574 . I don't have much left to finish really, just waiting on an order to arrive so I can chain up my slaves.

Thanks for sharing - sound quite complex and interesting, I'm definitely looking forward to it.

Hey, I once knew a guy that actually used a bit of his own blood on the edges of the weapons on his warriors. It quickly dries and turns brown, so it's not as effective as synthetic blood effects xD Also, he was a little weird ;)

And you'll be using some real chain? I found it good to use a bit of superglue on it once it's in a desired positon, so it doesn't hang around and shift later. But seeing how much you research about the hobby, you probably know that already

The Mortis Engine

Porážkou Dobytka continued to stitch the hole in his robe closed. It was a tattered and feeble garment, but when one owns but two shreds of cloth alone all care must be taken. Porážkou's scrawny fingers worked feverishly to finish his work for today was the day, this hour was the hour. His mind returned to the beginning of his path, the first of his sacrifices. The loss he felt as he bled his own childhood friend was his gift to the great lord of the dead, the demon of his dreams, the saviour of his soul. As he slit the puppies neck the visions began and his path was laid.

"Please! Let me go!"

The plea from his prisoner broke his train of thought. Porážkou threw his robe over his head, drew his dagger and plunged it deep into the thigh of his prisoner. The blood flowed easily spilling over the consecrated ground, running into carvings into the stone and the earth began to shudder beneath his feet.

My mortis engine is complete. I had so much fun playing with this conversion and while it didn't come out exactly as I imagined it, I am very happy with the result. You can find heaps more pictures and some details on how I made it here:

Great conversion  Bonus thumbs up for the story  Adds a lot to the model by giving some context. Porážkou is certainly one sick...puppy.

Thanks @robtion . I was going to make the story worse, but then I figured this site probably has some kids on it too heh

BTW the name is a bastardisation of "Slaughterer of Cattle" in Czech, a bad bastardisation because I had to make it sound like a name.

It turned out great! So wet, bloody and gory :) Other than wonderfully painted characters on the top, I like the blood splatters on the stone and the torn out trail in the ground  The story itself really enriches the mini! And I wouldn't be so afraid of making it bad for children - I've read worse stuff here ;)

As for the name - I looked it up and saw how did you build it - and it's all good, but in the end you came up with Porážkou, which is just a step from porážka, which means a failure or a defeat - rather unfortunate for people familiar with slavic languages xD When I saw that you used 'Slaughterer' I expected rather a word for a butcher - Řezník ;) Still, it could work as an interesting twist on this character :)

Oh I like it even more now that I know that porážka means failure of defeat, works better than butcher for the character. He's a scrawny waste of a man, outcast, left out and defeated at every turn until he found the shadows of the Strigoi. I might run my next name past you @Borgnine and get your thoughts though, it would have been good to know that first.

Really sweet conversion and a great paintjob.

If you want to write up the more scary story you can post it in our Beast Within sub-forum. Pretty much anything goes in there.
