I know this has probably already made its way up here somewhere but does anyone have a good way of stripping models? I recently acquired some ghouls for a greatly discounted price but the poor sod looked like he tried for a wet blending for shading but made the ghouls look like they were chocolate and vanilla swirl ice cream

First off I always get excited by this thread title and then it always disappoints :perv:

Secondly be careful with some paint stripping substances as they can melt detail off the plastic:thumbsdown:

well, obviously you want to start with the top layers first and work your way down till those models are bare :perv:

simple green seems to be a popular one for stripping models

I highly recommend Dawn Power Dissolver.

It's a spray on gel that is designed to remove burnt on grease from pots and pans. In my opinion, it's no more toxic than Simple Green.

My general method is to dump the bottle of goo into a plastic container, drop in the minis, and close the lid. I leave stuff in there for 24 hours, and psint comes off, even from the cracks, with minimal brushing.

I have used it to remove paint from metal, plastic, and resin without harm, even when left in the container for months. This product makes glue brittle and appears to reduce the adhesion capabilities of green stuff over time. It will not remove the newfangled GW primer from plastic.

Methylated Spirit. It seems to be rather underused but I love it! It's cheap, relatively harmless compared to other products, and good for metal, plastic and resin (though I've never tried it on Finecast). A good old soak and a scrub with a tooth brush and you're laughing!

Do you use purple methylated spirits, u_m? Because the clear stuff I used once melted the plastic piece I put in ...

Dettol, dettol is what you want!
Just soak your babies in it over night, whip 'em out, and give 'em a good scrubbin' with an old toothbrush.

It works on metal, doesn't melt plastic, and kills 99.9% of all known life into the bargain!
What more could a boy want?

Yeah purple meths. I thought that's what methylated spirit was. If you're referring to White Spirit that's a big no-no. Plus it leaves a horrible greasy film over your metal minis.

If it was white spirits, then it's not what I asked for (I didn't actually buy it), but I never got a greasy film ... But never mind, I have methylated spirits now

I've found the best wat to strip plastics in to use Dettol..http://homespices.com/products/Dettol%20liquid.jpg

Its not that expensive and saves the plastic.

Be casutious though, when cleaning the models only use the dettol mixture, if you add water to the cleaning process you'll get a lovely paint glop that will never come out of everything unless you do some serious scrubbing or let it dry...it looked like it had turned into tar....
