Thanks for the chart. It will be very helpful. The mega paint set saves Americans a grand total of...$.50!? What a deal they are giving us. ^_^
Well spent a good chunk of the day trying out the new paints, some are better, others are worse.
The Medium will be good and the texture paints work well.
The Drys are basically old paint that has started to congeal.
Nuln Oil is better than Badab Black but Drakenhof Nightshade is a poor excuse for Az Blue, There is a really good prospect though for a green wash I have been using today.
The New Boltgun Being Ironblaster (or something to that effect) is not as good and all the paints have been watered down in advance of being used so you don't have too..... but they are also cheaper to make and you get less use.
Plus side the new pots (yes new) are only slightly different but get a seal around the lid so it is shut as you would expect before opening much like a pop bottle and they have catches that keep them open..... and it works!

I also spent a pretty big chunk out of my day (about 3 hours) playing around with the pretty colours. The texture paints seem to have a bit of versatility (mud on miniatures and that sort of thing) but most of the time i can just see it being used on bases. It takes a long time to dry if you want to have any sort of variance in height, and you need to be careful not to crush it when you are painting over it as you can flatten detail out (the grain isnt hard like sand). But I can see it having it's applications, it's just something you have to be rather careful with.
I actually thought the 'dry' paints were pretty good too. Initially they seemed like a bit of a waste of time, but they do really spread a lot more evenly and easily than using other paints to drybrush. This is basically evident of all the paints they had to show, they do what they are intended to do, and well. Green glaze was definately star of the show though, I would have liked to test some of the other glazes after playing round with that one.
On the topic of the catches, I believe only the shades and the glazes have them, although the rest do have the seal.

That I will say though is it takes at least twice as long for things to dry now on all washes and a bit longer with paints also.
The green was great and I am looking forward to using it more but a single model took 90 minutes to dry and not fully when washed with it.......
In short, bring a magazine.
Carroburg crimson is beautiful (equivelent to baal red imo) and is so smooth. Glazes are great when building up a paint scheme (power weapon painters, Enjoy!)

Australian Price-
$870
-$165 (the army figure case that comes with it)
=$705
$705 divided by 145 pots of paint
=$4.86 per paint pot
The usual price of a pot of GW paint- $6
So you are getting an almost $2 saving on each pot- and bear in mind, this is the australian prices, the UK/American prices will be much, much cheaper.

That works out at £333.50 for the paints and a free case.
But the point is £300+ is a huge amount to spent, especially when just on paints.
Now if you have £333 to spend on paint, be my guest but the new set costs a fortune which I rather spend on models and buy paints as I need them as lets face it there is a huge new range but did any of us ask for 24 shades of green?
And the case being a huge army case means its no longer handy to carry about as you need the biggest case they produce, its no longer something to pick up on the way out the door, its more of a strap it to your back ready for the long arduous trip into town.

Its a large sum of money yes, but thats not what overpriced means. Overpriced says "this costs more than the sum of whats in it should"
i had a chance to test out the new Ceramite White (base colour) the other day... and OMG it only took two coats from matte black to a decent even white.
Then forgive me for not using the exact wording, I did not expect my use of the word to be picked apart.
Either way though, at that price and for what you get with the new paints I don't think its worth it, the old one was but the new one will only be truly useful to pro painters who spend all day blending, to everyone else its a bit of a waste and I think you should buy what you need as you need it rather than walking out of a GW to find you have been robbed and your wallet sacrificed on the twin alters to Khorn and GW Marketing.

I don't think Games Workshop expect everyone to buy all 145 colours 
its a waste of money to alot of people (i.e anyone who isn't a huge/pro painter), but buying a box of grey knights is a waste of money to alot of people too (i.e. anyone who isn't a grey knights player)

I would like to chime in as a semi-pro painter that Vallejo paints have long since dominated those produced by games workshop. I hardly touch my GW paints any more and even have oop colours such as Nauseating Blue, Brazen Brass and so on.
I am interested to see what GW has done with their paint range to 'warrant' a new release. I'm am not holding my breath expecting something revolutionary....

Anyway, back on topic. I will buy some of the new paints, but not colors i already own. I actually don't care if it is gw colors, vallejo, p3, reaper, or anything. I buy paints cause i need them in my palette.

I just wish with my current uni workload, I would have some time to paint !!! However that just isn't the case so far. I have quite the ORK army on the back burner, but the new Vampires have certainly piqued my interest due to their painting potential.

To be fair on the 145 paints thing, I counted my paints the other day and have over 100 pots of GW paint, and its down at that number because of a lack of different shades- I can easily see myself increasing my paint collection to 145 with new shades available.
Tested some of the new paints today and holy hell the quality has improved! Pigments are much better and even the dry range has its use though I was very skeptic of that one and expected nothing.
Some dry metallic named necron something was great for subtle highlights.
Washes, these are now called shades and have much better covering so you will not go through pots as fast nor is there any noticeable splotching, for lack of a better term, on large or flat areas.
Textures are nice time savers if you hate messing around with PVA and sand. They cover really well and dry a lot faster than the other paints despite the thickness.
Glazes are like lesser pigment shades though instead of hunting the lower areas mistly they spread more evenly. Tested this on a white test model and it turned it a nice light green.
Bases are better than foundations IMO as they aren't as thick and do not dry so darn fast. Effectively the paint you are used to but covering like foundation. I used the new white on black and even a single coat was actually...white!
And then there us the range itself, some old colors retun under a new name inclyding many pinks, blueish grays, terracotta-ish color and brass.
I have heard people moaning about how the new paints do not match the old ones but there are only a few that do not match precisely and even then the difference is minor. Biggest change is the old emerald-like Dark Angels Green. That one is truly gone.
Rest of the colors I really would not worry about. I tested some of the greens, reds and greys next to old paints and they matched perfectly, forget the list GW put up and look for your own replacements. I was using that list first but found better matches by just looking at it though not all paints were available yet so better matches might just be around the corner.
I also immediately noticed, by being antisocial and opening some pots of the same color, that they all looked the same. The old range had horrible variations in tone. I had two pots of the same Mechrite Red and one was more brownish whilst the other a perfect red. I had five of the new pots together and the color was consistent. It is funny how people cry about slightly changed colors yet never noticed that this already happened between pots in the old range.
Last but not least; caps stay open and close really well too.
GW did some really stupid stuff IMO and I am far from a fanboy praising them but these new paints really are amazing.
I am horribly critical of paints as an artist and I can spot bad quality a mile away, this stuff is a lot better quality than the old paints and with no change in price the money is finally well spent. I even sniffed and twirled the new pots! Really I am that terrible but for those wanting to know; you will no longer get high from using washes!

This all sound very good (very, very good I must say), but one thing still bugs me...

@Zephyr: The pots stay open you say. Is it due to a small plastic "spike" pointing upwards inside the hinge? If yes then it is nothing new, the first pots of this kind (notably the first washes and foundations) had these, but for some reason they were removed from the newer ones.

My two cents about the new paint line....
I can't wait to get my hands on it, I am so sad that the local game store cant get it until next week.
My only issue is where to put it....I'm running out of rtoom. I need to organize like lillilllliililllil. (by the way lillilllliililllil, I think I fell in love.erv: ) If I didn't have kids and kittens I could organize like you. :slapface: What was I thinking?
Anyways... As soon as the game store gets my set in, I'll do up my own review.
