I was looking at Vlad in the UL book and started thinking combined with a Tomb King a GG Horde may be viable again. Especially if flanked by mortise engines.

Any thoughts or input is appreciated.

Hello there

I was thinking along those lines as well for bigger games. I wouldn't take a king or prince though as vlad would have to use their WS and I'd rather save points for something else. The shadow aura is a decent amount of protection without the TK ability. I would try out your idea in 3k games though as double engine, vlad, GG horde and support casters will cost a good chunk of points.

My mistake. Still, I would rather spend the points in a support unit instead of going for an all eggs in one basket approach

I had a discussion about this build in another thread on the forum. https://www.vampirecounts.net/threads/undead-legions-sweet-combos.27948/ it starts somewhere in the middle on the first page.

With the new End Times magic I was thinking about maybe another variant. Since Vlad will know 4 spell lores he has boatloads of utility, from re-rolls to wound and to hit, to reducing the enemy´s Toughness and Weapon Skill. If you can get it off you could even Mindrazor the horde for Strength 10 Grave Guard. Also, since you can cast multiple instances of the same spell (Invocation of Nehek for instance) the need for support casters is lessened. Another cool thing is the double movement spell combo you can do here through Breath of Darkness and Van Hell´s Danse Macabre.

I would even argue that the unit doesn´t need Great Weapons and can keep the sword and board because of the buffing through spells, this will counter some of the more obvious weaknesses such as stomps and the need for mortis engine support.

The base unit would look like this:
Vlad, Mortarch of Shadow
49 Grave Guard
-Full Command
-Banner of the Barrows

I´m not sure if the Tomb King is all that necessary, since as Seneschal said the -1 to hit is good enough as is and spending around 200+ points extra may be too much. Maybe adding a Wight King BSB with the Rampager´s Standard would be better to guarantee the charge.

It´s all theory so far though and maybe it´s rubbish, you´re dumping a lot of points in one unit but such is the way of things with Death Stars.

The issue with Grave Guard is that they're still too fragile and cumbersome to be an optimally effective combat unit. It's simply too easy for the highly mobile armies that dominate the game these days to out-maneuver, chaff, and avoid them.

HOWEVER, GG/TG are still great as a denial unit. You can tie up a really large amount of points into that unit, and with the right buffs there's very little that your opponent is willing to throw at that unit before substantially whittling it down.

That makes it really effective in a gunline army. Two massive units of zombies/skeletons anchoring the flanks, a huge Tomb Guard horde in the middle, all forming a big wall in front of your battery of light/death mages, catapults, and caskets.

The goal would be to make that unit so scary that people wouldn't be willing to go into it without knocking it down a few pegs, with the ranged support to punish them for spending the time doing so.

I'd probably run a blender lord, level 4 to vampires for bubble heals, a tomb prince with GW and magic resistance, all in a big Tomb Guard brick with halberds and razor standard (because they strike at I). Behind I'd have a unit of 20 or so archers bunkering a level 4 LHP on light with mighty scroll, and two level 1s on light with dispel scroll and forbidden rod. Then I'd also have a pair of catapults (unupgraded), a casket, and a hierotitan (or two caskets).

Supporting I'm thinking vargheists for warmachine hunting, two huge bricks of zombies, and a corpse cart (since you won't be moving anywhere anyways). And chaff, of course.

The one thing I'll say about this army, though, is that it's boring as shit. You basically just hole up in a corner and melt stuff with the council. Say goodbye to sportsmanship votes.
