Oh hey here's the whole army so far, the photos are shopped a little to more accurately reflect the true colors of the army (I'm using an ancient digital camera...)

I have to say...I keep looking at the pictures, and, well....
My eyes keep drawing back to the banner. You did an awesome job on it. Is it freehanded? It must be with how amazing it is.

Thank you. Yep it's freehand. There's more paint than plastic in that thing... I had to keep redoing it when I messed up. I have a Wight King standard bearer I converted from the flaming skull head/torch (Empire Wizard) and banner/body from the Longsword kit. But his banner just doesn't measure up yet so I haven't posted him. The banner says "Tempus Fugit" (Time Flies) and has a little hourglass with bat wings, but it doesn't have the visual punch of the burney banner.

Ok, here's the Wight King BSB. He was originally holding a torch, but it looked distracting and goofy. Now he's pulling out a sword... or something. Good thing there's that cape there.

"Tempus Fugit" is latin for "Time Flies". Based on the temporary nature of life and all that, and the inevitability of death. Good sentiment.

Anyhow, I'm thinking about making some sort GRAVE GOLEM (or two or three) as stand in models for ... something. Mortis engine, black coach, vargulfs, anything. I just really want to make a massive golem made of gravestones, dirt, and mangled flesh. I'm thinking black coach, but if people believe mortis engine is more useful, I could go for that too.

So in order to do this, I'm going to need gravestones and loads of greenstuff and assorted bits. I can either make the gravestones by hand... or I could order that massive Mantic zombie pack that comes equipped with all the tombstones I'll ever need.

Has anyone mixed and matched Mantic and GW zombies before? Does it just look goofy? If it looks halfway decent, I might be tempted to give that a try. On the other hand, if you believe that making these tombstones would be super easy and cheap to DIY, then tell me that too (especially if you have tips!)

Ordered a whole mess of stuff recently... I couldn't resist... I mean... it's not a 1000 point army yet, but it's slowly growing into 500-750 points. More zombies, Grave Guard (zombie greatswords) and a few skeletons (zombie state troops) on the way. Maybe a vampire or two I cobble together from spare bits as well.

Still kind of meh about the Wight King, but that's fine. Any suggestions to improve him would be welcome.

Great job! +1 from me bud!

Brahm

Thanks man!

Hey guess what? Those empire state troops arrived today... so... I was incredibly impressed with the presence and detail of these models. They're all begging to be made into individual characters... and I did.

Much better than using them as a block of zombie skeleton troops. I got two necromancers, five vampires (and once I pick up a 5 pack of skeletons), 3 wight kings. Now that's value.

It turns out that the halberd/spear haft on the State Troops is compatible with the heads of the Empire wizard staff, so now I have two necros in the process of zapping some unfortunate souls.

The rest are just conversions using bits from the greatswords and zombies kit. Some of them feel kind of imperial vanilla, but hopefully that will change once they're painted and gore spattered. I might even put a few body parts on the bases. Here are the models so far:

ai1095.photobucket.com_albums_i464_jseitelm_P1010085.webp

And yes I know necromancers can't equip shields in-game. I can always rip them off if there's an uproar. It really only looks good on one of them anyway.

I am thinking a grave golem made for a mortis engine would be great and maybe more fitting.
The "Tempus Fugit" banner is just as beautiful as the other banner. I envy your freehand skills.

I havemt tried mixing the zombies between mantic and GW, but the ghouls mix fairly well. You need a little greenstuff, but it works.

Oh, and your new friends are looking awesome.

Yeah a mortis engine would make more sense than a black coach. Hmm... it's very tempting to get those ghouls and tombstones... but I have more than enough on my plate to paint already. Maybe in a month or so.

I assembled, prepped and primed 20 more zombies, 10 more graveguard and those 10 misc. characters. In the interest of maintaining interest, here's two wraiths and a wight king assembled from zombie, greatsword and state troop kits (and some Greenstuff for the cloaks)...

Yep. I'm beginning to see the benefits of non-bright, non-contrasty color schemes. I've tried to make every model I've painted max contrast and max color, so now the characters really don't stand out as much as they should. Oh well.

***EDIT***

Just finished up a vampire! Here he is in a unit of grave guard and on his lonesome.

And Another...

Will update this post as more are finished!

Love what you've done with the Free Company - you're right that they make better individuals, probably because that's what they were originally made for.

(Ah, Mordheim...)

Anyway. I think the issue with the Wight King is one of scale. His cloak arm is that much thinner than the other one, and the hand that much smaller. A slightly bulkier forearm (maybe an old Skeleton arm?) might help address this. The shoulder's a bit awkward-looking too, it might be worth sticking an armour plate over the joint or something.

Mordheim huh? That's interesting. They are surprisingly detailed.

Here's the latest update... only the two necromancers to paint before moving to the bulk of the new troops... doubling my zombies (to 40) and my graveguard (to 20).

So... all the characters so far.

ai1095.photobucket.com_albums_i464_jseitelm_HeroSpread.webp

Revamped Wraiths, now with extra blood splatter to their ethereal cloaks.

ai1095.photobucket.com_albums_i464_jseitelm_WraithSpread.webp

And the new vampire/wight king figures.

The characters are mainly just for fun... once I complete the zombies and GG, I'll be ready for my first 500 pt. battles =)

Uhm... if the wraiths are ethereal, what is the blood sticking to? :O

Anyways, you might consider making the characters less contrasty, more solid colors to stick out from the troops? Kind of the opposite of the average army.

(My two cents is I like it as is. :) )

You know, I thought about that?

It just looked 100% cooler than pure "shady blue", so I decided to paint first and justify later.

And the solid color idea is solid. It actually starts to work for the character with the big red cloak. Maybe that way I can paint my eventual head vampire in all black... classy.

Ok... finished all 20 zombie greatsword Grave Guard now.

Here are some photos of the finished regiment.

It's not that... professional, but I'm glad it's slowly progressing. I do like the swords, although I'm sure they would stand out more if the regiment was more uniformly colored... less peacock, more like something black and silver.

Going to try to buy some Crypt Horrors this week so I have something a bit different to paint. I think they'll be a little gorier than the stuff I've done so far. Although I still ought to finish those zombies before moving on. Oh well. (and yes I know some of these minis have already been posted... I don't have any way of distinguishing the original 10 from the new 10.)
