My friend asked me "money aside which army for WHFB would I most want to play?" I picked VC, and he was on my door the next day with a legion box, and army book.

I am excited to play, but have no experience, a very small army, a budget issue (I'm a teacher), and an opponent that can field 5000 pt armies in Skaven or Dwarfs. Having read several threads, I'm not afraid of losing, I just don't want to get wiped so badly that I don't enjoy it. I have picked up some GG, and Hexwraiths, but am wondering what I should get next.

I am likely going to get a couple hundred bucks allotment for fathers day and want to know how best to invest. It sounds like I need some zombies badly. I don't mind spending the money as this is something that I plan to do for a long time. I just need to build slowly. From what I have read, the Vargheist are really good, I have Krell and need to get Heinrich if nothing else because I have known him from WHFRP over half my life.

I would now like to apologize for the very tasteless Sparkly vampire reference. Thanks in advance.

Buffing up your core models is a necessary evil that we must all do. Zombies is a must as you've said, and some like just zombies. I prefer to have one unit of either skeles or ghouls as well (skeles for me, purely for aesthetic purposes). So find out how you want to play your core blocks and get plenty of them.

Dire wolves are also a must have IMO. They are cheap redirectors that tale up core allotment. Sure fell bats and spirit hosts do a better job but they are not core.

If you get some bats and ghosts depends entirely on how important map control is to you an your playstyle. Personally I would convert for those models (part of my personal to-do list). Herron a swarm base and putting any sort of soldiers or even civilian looking models on with an ethereal paint job would do for the ghosts. I plan on making winged skeletons/zombie/ghoul creations using the 40k tyrants gargoyle wings.

If your getting grave guard 3 boxes will do you fine. 30 is ideal for lists over 2k and 20-25 may do for smaller games (I admit I don't play smaller games with VC often, so perhaps ask another for unit sizes)

Next up would be to decide what type of monster you'll be having (unless your going all infantry with even more grave guard). All are good but all play differently. For example crypt horrors are reliable and solid anchor and vargheist are a powerful and fragile hammer. Varghulfs are great all around monsters and terrorgheist excel at taking out anything that isn't a large block of troops.

In the interests of saving money in Zombie land and you don't play at Games Workshop stores, I would buy Mantic Zombies, they are better models, much cheaper than GW zombies and are the same base size as GW zombies.

Althought your local GW probably won't let you use models from other companies. So only really an option if you go to different game clubs or your friend has their own gaming table.

Welcome! And happy gaming!

To save myself some money I took a couple of zombies with scythes and gave them green stuff cloaks. You can use them either as characters or as a unit.

Unit fillers are also a great way to increase the size of your units. That's what those grave stones are for!

Also, seeing as you're playing friendly games, just borrow some models and designate them as being whatever you want. Try before you buy.

Hope you have fun.

Thank you gentlemen. It is a pretty friendly club there are 4 of us total, two on budgets.

All things considered so I should not have any difficulty playing before paying. thank you

I will defiantly check out Mantic Zombies. yes he has a table with the topographical covering and everything: buildings, trees you name it.

I see why they call you Rob the wise.
