This is an idea I thought of as well; a timeline of major events. I think it'll serve three purposes.
One, it'll serve as a living document to keep tabs of major events so if people join later, they can come up to speed.
Two, if people go away for some time, this will be a good place to look to see what happened, and quickly get back into the game.
Three, strictly documentation. If this goes for a long period, you can look back at this to remember things that have happened.
