Hey guys,
I've recently played a few games against a Lizard men player and I cant seem to really put up a fight. I just wanted to know what list you would run to deal with these lizards and how.

He used:
SLAN MAGE (General, BSB)
4 Disciplines
- Focus Mastery
- Foxus Rumination
- Higher State Of Consciousness
- Becalming Cognitation

--

Tetto'eko

Skar Veteran
- Banehead
- Pirahna Blade
- Trinket 4+ Wound Ignored On First Wound

--

2x25 Saurus Warriors (Full Command)

10 Skink Skermishers

2x1 Jungle Swarm

--

2x6 Chameleon Skinks

20 Temple Guard (Full Command)

--

2 Salamander Hunting Packs (Add Crew)

-------------------------------------

How he played:

Priest inside Temple Guard - Centre Position.
2 Saurus units either side of Temple Guard.
Chameleons scouted and plinked at ghoul horde.

The thing that caused the main problem was those 3 heavy squads in the center. Saurus warriors are kinda like elite units but.. core? 0.o
Anyway.. heres my list for the last game.

Master Necro (In Zombies)
- Dispell Scroll

Vamp Lord (In Grave Guard)
- Harmour
- Enchanted Shield
- Ogre Blade
- Presivation
- Quickblood
- Redfury

--

Vampire (Goes With BloodKnights)
- Barded Nightmare
- Harmour
- Lance
- IronCurse
- Redfury
- Lvl 2

--

35 Ghouls Horde

5 Direwolves (redirectors)

30 Skeleton Warriors

20 Zombies (Bunker)

--

30 Grave Guard (Horde)
- Great Weapons
- Banner Of Barrows

--

5 BloodKnights (With Vamp)
- Full Command

1 Terrorgheist

----------------------------

I may have used a 'different' list for this game, but even with my competitive list I still seems to do bad.

What I think the problem is, is that his core troops are superior to all my core and most elite units.

Hehe, thanks in advance to any replies. :)

I am assuming that Slann also goes in the temple guard or is he one of the few that runs a lone Slann?
My favorite way of killing lizards is lore of life and especially dwellers from below. If Slann is in the temple guard (as he usually is) make sure that your caster is within 24 inches from the temple guard but more than 24 inches away from the Slann. This lets you keep your 6s when rolling to cast. This gives you a relatively high probability of killing the toad together with a binch of his lizard friends. Once the Slann is gone it will be a lot easier to deal with the rest.

I B-Line my lord inside skeleton unit straight for the temple guard slaan unit. And if I play it right, I can get my 6 strong unit of varghiets to the rear of that unit, where his assumingly newly exposed slaan lie. Graveguard easily take care of the other saurus.

He is running Temple Guard. The Slann HAS to go in that unit. He will also be in the second rank, so you can potentially be within 24" of the Temple Guard but not Slann.

But, to be honest, with only 20 Temple Guard, you should be ab;e to grind them down. Lore of Light helps you to strike before them, Lizards have low I as well as our core. Death/Shadows is also good if you get Purple Sun/Pit of Shades, but don't count on it.

Personally, against Lizards I would go max magic defense, and not rely on spells too much. Go Combat characters.

A lot depends on what lore the Slaan is using, i'm guessing Life or Light, but Death would also be an issue. Your TG is a points sink that can be annihilated by his poisoned shooting if your not careful. The Slaan is quite capable of neutering your magic. You should aim to destroy his support units first, skinks, sallies etc then concentrate on one saurus block at a time. Usually if you get the Slaan you win.

Hey all, Thanks for all the replies.

Yeah the Slan is with the Temple Guard. He also had Loremaster of Heavens and light.

I just faced him again with a slightly changed list (I won by 217 pts).
Changed the Terrorgheist to a BlackCoach (Reached Ethereal fast).
Bloodknights got a very nice charge off, through salamanders, finished saurus and into Slann.

The idea of the 24" of the Slann and Guard is really cool and I will indeed try this in the future!

Thanks again all, im sure my next few games will be more successful against the Lizards! :vampire3:

The Slann will be in the center of the unit so getting within 24 inches of the unit but not from the Slann is usually relatively easy if you come slightly from the flank rather than straight into the front.

his army is very weak and relies entirely on "cheese" in the three forms of:

1) slann that can choke your magic phase and has an extreme magic phase of his own.
2) tetto eko that has an incredible chance of casting with IF.
3) the scar veteran who will charge your general and will cross his fingers and hope for one wound (that becomes 4 wounds and thus killing your general).

these tactics may very well work but they are fairly easy to counter as long as you are aware of them. just as mentioned you can stay out of range of the slann while being in range of the TG. tetto eko can be killed by anything fast, and the scar vet can be bogged down to prevent him from reaching your general.

on top of this he has very few fast units (though the jungle swarms can be annoying) and thus you should be able to control the battlefield, if it werent so that you also had very few fast units and thus you cant take advantage of this. i suggest you get a lot more direwolves (and possibly remove the skeletons since they will not be able to do anything against any unit) so that you can take charge of where you fight and when.

If you can kill his TG you will win, but usually (if he goes life and i assume that he is) they are just too hard to take down. T8, 4+ regen and ressurecting d6+1 model means that you wont kill any models, and if you do they will return to life at once (im a veteran LM player myself, and i have used that tactics often. believe me, it works). I would recommend you to kill the other saurus blocks and try to divert the TG. if you absolutely HAVE to fight the TG, you pretty much have to get a rear charge off aswell. that makes resurrection harder since if there is no where to place the models they cant be resurrected.

So, do whatever you can to gang up on one of the saurus locks while diverting the two others. if you for example attack the right flank-sauruses with GG and bloodknights they will die in no time. if you can block off the TG with wolf darts for example, the TG will usually be in the way of the left flank-sauruses so that they can not support their friends. if you can kill one of his saurus blocks (and his chaff) while losing only your own chaff you will win. it will be very tough to score a more decisive win than that against this type of army.

The one Lore we can not take!!!! ;)

I wouldn't take Skeletons to this game and take more Zombies instead, because to a Saurus Warrior or Temple Guard, there is very little difference between the two and Lizardmen are really difficult to fearbomb with their cold blooded leadership.

Hey again :)
Thats interesting, thanks Vectra, next game I will use more wolves as diverters and concentrate more on the blocks.
Cheers everyone, be interesting if I can do the 24" deal :) Got a game later today, I'l post how it goes and both lists used.

Robthewise - aye good point, Il rework my list :) Thanks.

....Correct, forgot about that one. I am relatively new to VC and dont think I have ever faced Slann with them. My other armies are mainly WE and some daemons that both have access to all lores. Most lizard players in this area seem to have put them on the shelf for a while and switched to other armies (mainly to skaven and WoC). At the moment I dont think we have any active lizards or tomb kings while all other armies have at least one person playing them.

I play LM a lot. I am surprised he is using so few Temple Guard and I am surprised he's using Swarms at all. They are commonly viewed as the weakest unit on our list. He seems to be investing everything in the Slann.

My advice, don't bother attacking the Slann directly. With a unit of Temple Guard that small you should be able to take it down with your Ghouls or Graveguard to the front and another force to the flank (probably the Bloodknights).

If you can kill all the Temple Guard the Slann will lose CR. Since he is probably the BSB he will automatically die if broken. That is the most common way Slann die.
