Ok I've got my first ever WHFB comp comingup, played in plenty of tourneys before but just never using WHFB rules. My main opponent that I have been training against uses Empire and this list seems to do well although it is not tweaked just to face the Empire.

The Total is 1982pts which leaves me with the option of kitting the GG out with Greatweps instead of sword and board or adding a few more to the rank and file to bring it up to 2k. The Vamp Lord will sit in the Skeleton Unit and the caster vamp will lead the GG.

My Wight Lord will ride with the Black Knights and will lead the assault along with the Wolf vamp. I like this character set up and I've used it a couple of times now to great effect, the two caster vamps keep the main battle line going while the Wolf Vamp makes himself a nuisance and I just love Wight Kings.

I've nver tried to fit GG and Black Knights into the same list before and I dont know if its putting too many points into the Special slots.

Any thoughts?
 
Looks well rounded IMO. Some infantry, fast elements and a couple of hammers which are supposed but a good magic phase. I would try and find points for the dead legion banner for your GG, easily the unit which will attract most of the shooting. Quite handly to start with a US of 36-40 depending how your characters deploy.

Apologies for the thread necromancy but I want to canvas opinions for this tourney which is taking place this Saturday.

Ok I've tested the above list a few times and it performs ok however theres a few things that are really bugging me now. I just dont seem to have any luck healing my units the dice gods may hate me even though i'm usually casting the spell on a 3+.

The Varghulf I now have mixed feeling about, he's great at supporting attacks and providing a march down the flanks but he can get bogged down if he ends up on his own un supported.

Black Knights! Absolutely fantastic if you ask me especially with the Sword of Kings Wight leading them and banner of the barrows. This unit has kicked ass in every game I played. The big wow factor for me is the ability to move across terrain at 16". Big Thumbs up here.

Anyway the point is I'm a bit fed up with relying on magic to keep me going so I sat for a few hours in my tower of doom going over various tomes when the words "Blood Dragons" popped into my mind. And on that note I present you with the following list for review.

One thing you will notice straight away is that I've dropped from 2k to 1997 pts. I've fielded this so I get the minimum of 2 core choices but no Lord choice and heres why I've made this crazy move.

I've substituted a Lord for the tooled up unit of Blood Knights who will have a 4+ Ward save vs Shooting and a Regen save from the BSB making them pretty tough (In theory). This unit can be fielded for the same amount of points as a tooled up Lord, its just as tough and throws out 19 lance attacks on the charge. My black knights are still there and a unit of Grave Guard to hold the line.

My Army general is pretty resiliant and will lead the skele's along side the Grave Guard in the centre. In true Blood Dragon Style theres hardly any magic and its definately weak on magic defense. the wolves will screen the Blood Knights and play fetch with any war machines or wizards badly placed.

So I've written what I think about the list lets hear what some of the older Vamps lurking around here think. In particular I'm interested in feed back on the Blood Knights, how have people found them so far in battles etc?

Unless your tourney is 1999, you still need to have 3 core I'm pretty sure. I've never seen the arguement "I know it's a 2K battle, but I have 1997 so I only need 2 core" TBH.

I think your general could be assassinated without too much trouble. He's also paying 20 points for a GW, you must REALLY want str 7 =p

Any leadership type of attacks/spells/effects will have a field day. Casket, other VC players with Banshee, ect.

Maybe swap 2 units of wolves for 1 unit of fel bats. They can charge 360 on the turn you want your blood knights to go.

Take a warbanner instead of endless nightmare. You don't have the magic to keep the unit at 25.

As an aside, the lord in your first list has too many points in bloodline powers.

It's an interesting experiment, but I don't think I'd play a list where I intentionally neglected the strengths of my army. That's just me though.
