Tree Model Variants

Hey all,

I'm after a 'counts as' for Crypt Horrors and would like to add to my autumn forest theme by using evil tree monsters instead of big ghouls. Besides GW's Dryads, Tree Kin and Treebeard, I'm wandering what other tree minis there are out there (that can ideally fit on a 40mm base) as I'm not too familiar with other brands. All suggestions would be welcome.

P.S. I managed to find this on the net:

...which looks decent, but is a bit too big (he's on a 50mm) and also a bit too cartoony looking. Something smaller but meaner would be perfect.

if i'm not mistaken Reaper miniatures had some pumpkin monsters which might suit your purpose. worth having a look at. and i think someone already used them as crypt horrors so the size should be fine =]

I would recommend the citadel wood set. You get a bunch of trees which can be chopped up and converted easily. I have seen some pretty cool monsters made from them.

Malifaux also does some cool trees if you look them up. I have one in my plog as a Varghulf.

@Eyeless Cheers mate, I'm going to stay away from pumpkin golems (although I really like the minis). I've got evil trees set in mind for Crypt Horrors.

@robtion Thanks for the idea about the Citadel wood set. Do you have any pictures of peoples' conversions of this? I've taken a look at Malifaux's hanging trees, which look quite cool. I've yet to look through your plog again as I've been pretty busy with packing to move these days.

Raging Heroes have metal tree kin alternatives, but they are quite busy and not very mean, like the rest of their minis. Other than that, I don't remember anything. Maybe try sculpting them yourself? Trees shouldn't be difficult...

@robtion That link seems to be getting blocked by the Great Firewall of China, but I checked out the treekin conversions and there are some fairly inspirational ideas there.

@Borgnine I've just checked out Raging Heroes' tree minis and I'm not sure what to make of them. They're pretty cool as they are, but perhaps not completely suited to what I'm after. Their poses are a bit over the top but I find their stature inspiring to the thought of doing as you've suggested and making my own.

Cheers for the tips and help chaps. I'll post progress and ideas in my plog once I've moved and gotten my man cave established.

Trees can be pretty easily made using wire, crepe tape and structure color.
By adding some leftover arms and faces from the ghouls you can make some pretty creepy models. I have only a WIP, but it's looking good so far.

I just log in with my phone to drop this picture here while I remember. Is it too cartoonish? I find the faceless variant kinda twisted and menacing.

Just gotten around to checking these images out after finding a decent VPN.

@robtion The Citadel Wood tree monster conversions are pretty decent. @Sessioni Thanks for that link, I like the hulk-style tree appearance. These pics are definitely giving me some ideas that I want to play around with. Cheers again chaps.
