Hello all..
This is a thread on a new war game matt i made over christmas. In total it took an evening then an hr the next to dry brush.

:suck: Materials,

6' x 4' carpet (i used an off cut i had but you easily could get any remenant, the piece i had was felt backed)

5 tubes of acrylic flexible sealant (decorators caulk, you can go cheap but i went for a middle make that i knew was flexible)

sand and basing materials, i like to use a fine cat litter

acrylic and ready mixed paint

tools,clamps,paint scraper,paint brushes

:clown:how to

i started by cutting down the carpet to 6x4 then painted the edges with pva glue to seal the edges from fraying (i have now gone back and put gaffa tape around the edges to further stop fraying.) i then proceeded to mix the caulk, sand, cat litter and paint all up to make a thick sludge. i did add some water to help make it more fluid but it added to the drying time.

i then spead it all out over the carpet with the paint scraper but instead used my hands,i kept back some of the mix and added more black,or more grey i mixed the colours up so patches were all different

once i was happy with it i left it to dry for an night the next day i rubbed some of the bigger loose bits off and added a wash of watered down black paint i mean really watered down like the consistancy of tea with out milk, then washed over eveything once this dried about an hr i added flock and left to dry again,

once finally dry i drybrushed different shades of grey and brown till i was happy,

once complete i kept rolling it up hand hoovering it to get rid of loose bits, but now afeter 4 games two differnt houses it looks brill

here it is to my armies 40k and whfb

It certainly looks awesome, especially with your similarly-based models on top of it.

But can you still roll it up? If so that's genius.

Yep I have rolled it up and moved it now from house to house and only a little bit crumbled off but nothing of note. Its stored rolled up aswell.

Thanks for the tutorial! Gonna have to try this... I never thought I'd be able to have a playing surface that didn't take up a whole closet when stored. Truly an inspiration!

I may have to try that basing when I make my table top.

With the way you made the surface, do you think it would work well with flock as I am thinking of doing grass fields rather than dirt terrain.
