"I respect your sovreignty, of course." Vekarin told the Lahmian with a hint of deference, his head nodding slightly as he did so, "How my brother was ended is no matter. The members of the Blood Dragon forces will follow me or they will be branded as traitors to their bloodline and hunted down. I will not accept dissent amongst them."
As Vekarin said this, Victarias burst into the chamber, a question on her lips that died as soon as she witnessed the scene within. A quick taste of the air within told her the entire story and she rushed to the slagged and blackened armor that lay on the floor.

"What you do to your kind after we have fought Nagash is your own concern," Lesa said, "however before then we need everyone of them out there, and if they will not follow you we have a problem. I will not allow you to start exterminating the Council's forces to ensure your leadership."

Looking over at Victarias, Lesa felt a pang of sympathy. The love Victarias once had with her husband had been long gone, and for a moment she had another chance with the Duke. Now that had been cruelly taken away as well. Ignoring Vekarin for a moment Lesa walked over,

"I have no doubt he died honourably, fighting for what he believed in. In that regard he was probably the most honourable vampire I have ever met." Leaning closer she spoke so only Victarias could hear her, "and I know for certain he loved you like he had loved no other. When this is all over, perhaps there may be something that can be done to bring him back. With our kind nothing is ever final."

There was a scrape as Lesa lifted the Duke's sword. It had escaped undamaged, the fact the even against Vekarin the blade was still razor sharp and true a testament to the skill that created it. Lesa proffered it to Victarias,

"Possibly one of the finest mundane sword in existence, I am sure he would have wanted you to have it."

"I do not care why you were fighting Lord Todd," snapped the enraged von Carstein, "The fact that you two were brawling at all is enough. It is all very unseemly."

Peter and Todd both looked at the floor sheepishly, like two scolded children. The fact that they were both incredibly powerful vampires seemed to escape them in the wake of Lucia's wrath.

Calming herself down, Lucia turned to Jason, "I thank-you for the concern you have shown my Lord. At least one of you seems to know what is important," she added, before turning on her heal and marching from the room.

When she was well out of earshot, Peter mumbled something about her being better off still stuck in Altdorf, before turning his gaze to Todd.

"Well, you certainly gave me a run for my money," he said with a schoolboy grin, "Although you did get lucky," he quipped with a wink.

Luke poked his head in hesitantly. The room was a mess, with some blackened and smoked armor surrounded by ashes. Looking over the figures of the room Luke pierced together what had happened.

‘’So the Duke is dead? Well this is………..an interesting development.’’ Luke commented. He turned to Vekarin.

‘’You are the leader of the Blood Dragon factions under the alliance’s banner now? Correct? Now we can finally complete the mobilization. We'll be sending you informaiton on troop movements soon.'' Luke stated, turning around and starting to leave.

"That has not yet been confirmed," Lesa said to Luke, "until it is you will refer all information to myself." Without waiting for a response she handed the Duke's sword to Victarias before turning to Vekarin,

"I suggest we go out to the Blood Dragon's and see whether they will even consider accepting you before we make any other decisions."

Markus roamed the halls, his get had gone to see to the soon arriving contingant from the vault, he felt alone and he knew that he was never alone, wraith an archaic sword of power and hate hung at his side, oddly silent in his mind. He turned and looked out a window that surveyed the hills. He knew that out there in the wide world was his final death. A solem thought and a suprising one for a vampire to have, he turned and gripped the handle of his blade, "why are you silent? When I need your council so much" he had felt the pang of his own true mortality for the first time in his undeath and wraith seemed not to have anything to say on the matter. He turned back to the window "before I die I will kill the one who took you from me" his mind flooded with images of his lost lover and the lahmian queen and a single word escaped his lips "annabell"

Sweeney Todd had only pretended to be embarrassed, and rolled his eyes as Lucia turned around and stormed out of the chamber. He immediately began to silently ape her and would have gone on for a while more if Peter hadn't spoken to him.

"Well, you're pretty good yourself." Todd said with a light chuckle "And you got some nice gear. I wouldn't count this one as a 'win' for me."

Karl had remained silent for a few moments and sighed heavily with a glance at Luke.

"This is a mess." he said off-handely whilst making a small hand gesture, signalling for the young von Carstein to remain.

The Marshal shall have to be informed. he thought to himself.

He waved for Akarin and the Assassin's to step down, most faded away into shadow once more with the exception of Akarin himself who remained at the Baron's side.

Karl clicked his tounge and nodded glancing at Lesa and Vekarin.
"Instablility from the Council or the Deceased Duke's forces will be unacceptable." he said softly, his gaze resting on the ancient Blood Dragon after a few moments. "I care not who commands the armies as long as he is competent...as I am sure you are."

Akarin spoke up after a few moments, voicing Karl's earlier thoughts.
"The Marhsal shall have to be informed immediately, any weakness or lack of co-ordination between our allied forces will bring only weakness."

Karl raised a hand to silence the Assassin before glancing at Luke.
"We will wait until it is confirmed that Lord Banespike is now in command...and we shall have to confirm it immediately." the last was said with a look towards Lesa.

It was not a demand, it was a simple fact.
It would be better to finish this swiftly and inform the Marshal and Count in person rather than let them learn it second hand.

Kraskor Banespike hurried after Victarias as she burst away, wondering what was wrong. Drawing his Crimson Blade, Kraskor kept pace with his mistress, scanning for any sort of threat. Suddenly, rounding a corner, Kraskor set his eyes on his sire. Vekarin Banespike stood above a charred suit of armour, by the looks of it, belonging to the Red Duke. Kraskor instantly took in what had happened.

Vekarin now controlled all of the Blood Dragon's forces. It was his right. No honourable warrior could dispute his control over them now.

But what surprised Kraskor was Victarias' reaction. She hurried over to where the Duke had fallen, seemingly in grief. Kraskor was stunned, but did not show it. His sire was in heated debate with Lesa, the Lahmian, over whether or not Vekarin would inherit his brother's forces. Kraskor stepped forward, and bowed to his liege-lord.

"My lord Vekarin has complete control over every Blood Dragon that once served the Duke. We must obey him, he has defeated the Red Duke, and we must answer to Vekarin Banespike now. Of course, I serve my lord out of loyalty, and not out of convention or obligation. He is my sire, and I will stand with him until the end." Kraskor stood, his red sword still in his hand, and came to stand beside his master.

"I will always serve you, my lord Vekarin."

Lesa stared at the Blood Dragon who had just walked in before replying,

"Firstly, until decided otherwise these forces are under my control as agreed by the Council. Secondly if there is to be any decision as to who controls the Blood Dragons that will be between your master and myself, not one of his underlings."

Without another word she walked out of the room, leaving behind the empty shell that remained of the Duke. In silence the vampires walked, finally exiting the massive keep to be face awesome sight of the Blood Dragons arranged for battle. It was like a sea of crimson, so many were the vampires that covered the area before Drakenhof, and it was clear that perhaps every Blood Dragon on the world had gathered for what possibly would be the battle to end all battles.

With a click of her fingers Lesa summoned shard of shadowy magic from the ground, using the twisting darkness to propel herself upwards to better address the army before her. She could plainly see distaste at the use of magic from many of them, but she didn't care. They knew as well as she did now was not the time for squabbles, and until the upcoming fight was over they would do as she commanded.

"Blood Dragons!" her voice rang our clearly, louder than was seemingly possible. As she spoke again there was a slight echo that hinted towards magical enhancement, "the one that was chosen to lead you, the Red Duke, is dead." She paused for a moment for any response, but true to their martial training they remained silent, waiting to see what was said next. It was only because she looked for it that Lesa saw some the Duke's followers tense up.

"He was defeated in one on one combat, in an honourable duel between warriors. Thus the victor has claimed the Duke's title and his estate which is rightfully his according to your codes. So I ask you all, will you follow the one that defeated the Duke? Will you follow Vekarin Banespike?"

There was a moment of silence as some of the Blood Dragons glanced at one another. Finally one of the vampires turned to Vekarin, going down on one knee and shouting an oath of fealty. More and more followed suit and a relieved look came over Lesa's face as she realised that the Council's forces would still remain in tact.

"STOP!"

A shout full of rage and anger echoed over the field as some one ran from the castle. As they drew closer Lesa recognised Aubervillier, an incensed look on his face.

Auberviller ran towards the assembled vampires, rage burning in his heart. Many hours before he had gone looking for his lord and father, only to be lost in the maze that was Drakenhof. The damnable place truly made it difficult for any that were not Carstein to navigate and finally he had been drawn to the clashing of blades. He had exited into what appeared to be a balcony, although there were only slits in the stone wall to the area below. There he has witnessed the unspeakable, there he had seen the death of the Duke. Not an honourable death, duelling to the end, but the despicable cowardice of magic used against him by Vekarin.

His first thought had to be to shout and rage but his training took over. He would only alert Vekarin who perhaps would not wait around for anyone else to arrive. Aubervillier had raced off, trying to find a way to downstairs but again he had been foiled by Drakenhof. He had only heard what was happening outside when he had stopped a servant for directions.

Almost skidding to a halt near Vekarin, Aubervillier whipped out his sword.

"TRAITOR!!" he roared, "you do not deserve to lead us, you only deserve death! I saw you! I saw you use..magic" The last word was spat out, Aubervillier fighting to restrain himself from what would no doubt be a one sided fight, "you did not defeat my father honourably, you blasted him with some filthy arcane spell!"

There was a light thud as Lesa landed back on the ground, moving quickly to place herself between the two warriors. She could see many of the Blood Dragons moving closer, some looking on in anger, some in confusion, some in disbelief. The situation was getting more and more tense by the moment and it needed to be resolved fast.

"Vekarin?" Lesa asked, mentally preparing a spell in case things went bad, "is this true?"

Karl stood with both hands resting on his cane watching the other vampires with disdain.

"It is to bad they lack our family's unity, is it not so Luke?" he asked Micrea's get, he would be damned if he let the younger vampire out of his sight till this...annoyance was cleared up.

The Baron watched as another Blood Dragon came up, his sword flashing out as he threatened Vekarin.

"Oh dear." Karl said after hearing the accusations

He glanced at Akarin who stood tensely watching the other vampires, he no doubt had his followers in hiding, waiting incase these Blood Dragons started any more violence on von Carstein land.

"Now, now Akarin...relax, we shall stay out of the way, this is not our fight and our involvement may turn the Council even more hostile...we shall wait unless invited otherwise."

The Assassin nodded slightly but didn't relax causing the Baron to sigh again.

"Also Akarin...if they do start something send your men to inform the Marshal and Count straight away."

Akarin nodded once more, this time with a faint smile.

‘’Quite, quite’’ Luke nodded. ‘’Although, given the sheer size of the army, perhaps it’s best to wait until the Blood Dragons finish killing each other before we intervene. If we commit our forces here the carnage will be immense to say the least.’’ Luke commented.

‘’Anyway, at this point it’s probably best to way for the victor to emerge.’’

"It would be a Pyrrhic victory indeed." Karl replied to the young vampire.

He suppressed a smile, unlike his brother Luke was a man of quality and could rise rather high within the family some day.

The Regent turned his head slightly as he caught sight of a new comer walking up behind them.

"So boss, things goin' from bad to worst eh?" Silibar said happily

Akarin rolled his eyes and nodded.
"Indeed Silibar."

Karl glanced away, Silibar now there was a man the family should have been rid of a long, long time ago.

Kraskor sniffed contemptuously as Lesa left the room.

"I once held respect for Mistress Lesa. Now that I see even after saving her damned life, I cannot even swear my fealty and state fact in her presence without being reprimanded."

Kraskor walked alongside his master to the army of Blood Dragons, watching as they swore themselves to his master. Suddenly, another vampire rushed out, accusing Vekarin of magic. Kraskor stood forward, catching Lesa's eye. He hoped she would understand that what he was doing was not for personal spite, but for the good of all of them as a whole. Stepping forward, Kraskor roared to address the Blood Dragons.

"My master would never do such a thing! Yet, I am sure, this is not the fault of master Aubervillier, here." Kraskor turned to him, conveying sympathy and understanding in his eyes.

"Foul magicks have been at work here, but not by Vekarin Banespike! It was Drake Bloodfang!" Kraskor said, taking a breath, "I slew him as he attempted to kill Vlad von Carstein, and the senior Carsteins and some senior Council members. His magicks have shocked this very castle!" Kraskor roared, "He has twisted visions, warped the halls and corridors, and even creating ethereal flames from whence there was none before! It was not Vekarin who used these foul magicks!" Kraskor cried.

"It was Drake Bloodfang! Vekarin defeated the Duke in honourable combat! What Aubervillier here saw was a distorted sight, turned false by dark magicks! My master, and your master, was never guilty of such crimes!" Kraskor roared to the Blood Dragons.

He hoped Lesa would somehow get Aubervillier away, or perhaps to support Kraskor's story. This could be over before it started, and the Blood Dragons would be whole again.

"Indeed it would Baron." said Vlad emerging silently beside the other Carsteins. "This change in Blood Dragon leadership concerns me greatly." he said watching the events with interest. "There is something strange going on around here." He turned to Akarin "Keep Vekarin watched at all times. No matter where he goes."

"I suggest you keep out of this," Aubervillier snarled to Kraskor, "I know what I saw." His voice rose so the other Blood Dragons could hear him, "I saw him cast the magic, saw him put forth his hand to cast. I saw him gloat of our fallen leader! It was no accident and do not insult me by suggesting I could be mistaken!"

More and more of the Blood Dragons, especially those who were previously part of the Duke's army and had fought many times with Aubervillier, were turning to Vekarin with anger on their faces.

"Vekarin, if you have anything to say, I suggest you say it fast," hissed Lesa.

‘’Is this true Vekarin?’’ asked Walach, stepping out. The Grand Master of the Order of the Blood Keep was armor clad, as usual, and he was wielding his greatsword across his back. His helm was off, exposing his cold handsome features.

‘’This is obviously a great crime if you indeed have used such methods.’’ Walach stated. He looked at Aubervillier.

‘’Sir Knight do you have any proof of sorcery being used in combat? I don’t wish to call your word into question, but I would like to explore all possibilities if possible.’’

Jason glided down from the balcony where he had been perched overlooking the battle he was slightly disappointed over all the battle had been short and while the armor has proven itself had not compensated for peters lacking skill with his blade talented enough through he was..
"Fine work Mr Sweeney, Fine work indeed. I wonder if it is not you I should have made the equipment for?"
As they spoke some of the gets began to move away some angrily others more sluggish the blades however stayed watching Todd intently, but If he noticed he gave no sigh.

Rick moved though Darkenhof looking something. what it was he couldn't tell he just felt this was a path he should be following. he finished the thought as he overheard Markus talking to himself... again. Somewhat grimly, as always. He slid into the room shadows dancing off him as he spoke quietly like he had been standing there with Markus the whole time .
"Brother how good to see you I had through you much dead or eaten? I wasn't quite sure, I have heard many stories many of which I am unsure, of others which I believe ring true. Tell me why Jason send you to the vault?"

markus turned, shocked, "Oh rick..." he listened to ricks questions "Brother, it is good to see you... Jason sent me to the vault after our war with the lahmians... For my own protection and to rebuild, the whore queen took away my last shred of humanity and if jason had not sent me there to refine my skills and to gather an army there, then i would be dead now... in another rash assault on Her keep..." his mind went back to the battle in the queens chambers years ago, how he had almost gotten jason killed and had lost his love, vaskatchis get annabel. "I lost more against her than i ever thought possible... But jason was wise enough to lock me away in that keep were i was reborn, he saw the danger i was in and rescued me. There is more in that mountain then just the dead and ore... there is artefacts of power that will help us when it is our time to strike the whore down... this war with nagash, I am only here because jason summoned me, My gets who are here are all ready to fight and die for me, they have all sworn the same fealty to jason as i have and we go were he wills it... I care not for this council nor the bloodlines within it, I only care for my revenge." he stopped and drew his blade "Do you not hear it brother? the sword it speaks... in the mind, it spurs me on and with it I shall run her through... everything I am is because of this blade, if it had not been for it I would not have attracted the notice of jason, nor would I of taken the keep from the dwarves who defended it... without its voice I would still be a norseman pillaging and caring for nothing but plunder and murder... Now I am a warrior and it guides me down this path, It speaks in my mind brother and jason knows little of it... I was sent to the keep as punishment and protection... more for us all then myself.. after that day in her throne room, I care little for this 'immortal' life, I have raised an army, thousands strong, with the might of giants and other wild things of the north turned by necromancy"

he was truly a madman

Vekain looked out onto the awesome spectacle of the Blood Dragon host, their banners flying like the great wyrms from which the warriors took their moniker in the bright, silvery moonlight. The massive warrior's eyes burned in his skull as he looked over them, the most powerful fighting force ever assembled in the Old World and he paused for a moment before acting, as if carefully considering his next move.
The hellish visage of the skull-like mask that adorned Vekarin's face turned to face the razor-edged sword of the Duke's get that shined in the moonlight as it threatened the Blood Dragon lord. He made no move for a weapon, but it was clear that should his opponent attack, Vekarin would be more than prepared to meed his assault. He spoke quietly to the sword's wielder in a grim whisper that none beside the assembled council members could make out.
"It would be unwise to challenge me, youngling, for it would not be but a flex of my power to end you as I did your master. Lower your sword, lest the credence of my words be proven on the edge of me sword."
The massive warrior turned, glancing toward the towering figure of Lesa as she glided above him as he raised his hands to address the assembled vampires.
"I assure you, honorable sons of Abhorash, that these falsehoods hold no truth. It is the wish of my enemies to spin lies and weave dissent between the warriors of our bloodline, but that should not be so. Follow me into the fires of battle and I will more bring glory and honor to the line of Abhorash past that that my predecessor, the weak fool that he was, could ever have hoped to, and those miscreants who seek to break our resolve will be hunted down like the craven dogs that they are."

As he made the speech, the armored figure of Victarias glowered at Vekarin's massive back with a hate-filled stare, the Duke's sword burning in her hand.

"AND DOES THAT INCLUDE ME! VEKARIN SON OF ABHORASH!" Vlad's voice boomed across the room from where he stood next to Karl startling the von Carsteins around him. "Am I a craven dog to be hunted down by you?" he asked coming forward. "What about the members of the council who don't agree with you becoming military leader. Will you hunt them down too?"

Stepping into the centre of the room Vlad stared Vekarin dead in the eye. Vekarin was an impressive sight with his stature but even he paled in comparison to the legendary master of the von Carsteins. To his credit Vekarin held his ground as Vlad continued.

"Vekarin here has just brutally murdered one of the Council's finest officers for his own selfish motives. While this may be acceptable to you all. I remind you that we are effectively at war with one of the most powerful forces in this world and we are now a man down because Vekarin has just disposed of an extremely useful and reliable resource. Do you intend to reward the man who has just weakened your forces and done so in a way that is most suspicious?!

‘’Well if it was in honorable combat I don’t see the problem’’ Walach said. ‘’This sort of thing happens often enough in the bloodline.’’

The Grand Master turned and looked at Vekarin.

‘’Brother I’m afraid we shouldn’t be too hasty here. I’ve heard what you’ve said and what the knight here said, but we of the Blood Dragons must make an educated guess, or at least myself and my Order. Now, Mistress Lesa, do you mind bringing the remains of the Duke here? We might as well at least inspect the corpse to find out if it was magic that was used.’’

Walach paused for a moment.

‘’Say, why exactly did you kill the Duke anyway?’’ he asked.

As Vlad ordered Akarin to watch Vekarin the Assassin's gaze went blank for a moment before refocusing on the count.
Akarin bowed deeply to his lord.
"It is done my lord." he murmered.

After a few moments Vlad marched forward to confront Vekarin on his words.
Karl lazy walked forward, moving smoothly into position a few steps behind his count to smile politely at the Blood Dragons arrayed before him.

"I'm afraid there is no corpse them from the...duel, no doubt collapsing into dust under the weight of endured ages." the Baron interjected with a sorrowful shake of his head.

His eyes darted to Lesa for a moment.
We need to calm this matter, the council is too weak an entity to withstand any infighting.

His gaze transfered to Vekarin.
"I'm sure the honourable Lord Banespike has a perfectly acceptable explanation of the events." he said diplomatically.

Kraskor stood agitatedly with his lord as Aubervillier continued to throw his accusations. Then, his master, Vekarin, spoke to the assembled army, doubtlessly swaying more and more to his side. Surely now they would not try to fight him?

But then, suddenly, Vlad von Carstein appeared, from nowhere, and made an accusation so crude and so flippant that it galled Kraskor to even hear it. Vlad had been nothing to do with the internal affairs of the Blood Dragons, yet now he involved himself. He seemed almost like a spoilt child to Kraskor.

Kraskor stepped forward to Vekarin, and spoke to Vlad:

"My lord, these are the internal affairs of the Blood Dragons. Do not trouble yourself with this, please, it will only over-complicate things further." said Kraskor. When he heard that somebody would be going to fetch the body of the Duke, Kraskor interjected:

"Alas, the body will give you no clues. The magic of Drake has burnt it to a crisp. It is only a ragged corpse now, burned by magic, with no remaining evidence of Vekarin's masterful sword-strokes. Examining it will do no help."

Kraskor leaned in towards Vekarin, before whispering, so that not even a vampire could hear, "See how they interfere? They dispute your right to command, then Vlad himself comes and accuses you of petty disputes and warmongering, and of selfish, personal glory-seeking. Is that not what he himself has just done by involving himself in a dispute of our own honoured bloodline?"

Kraskor then turned back to Vlad, "Like I have just said to my master, if we are not allowed to fight or kill, how can we defeat Nagash? We must be sharp and combat-ready, and by pruning away the weak, we make ourselves stronger as a whole. Vekarin was victorious, so is obviously more fit to lead than the Duke ever was."
