All I can say is that Chaos would be the worst enemy to depict in what could be the first and last Ultramarine or space marine movie due to the fact that they are mirrors of each other. Its like having the evil twin as the main villain, super cliche, boring, and predictable. Don't get me wrong now, I love Chaos (especially Nurgle, I mean my main 40k army is Death Guard) but I don't see it as providing a deep or interesting antagonist. Tyranids are alien, with vast possibilities and an infinite intelligence behind their every movement, sure they are mindless in some ways, but it is the sheer alien-ness of their concept that makes them so threatening. They are the original Zerg, the original concept of the bug alien, the hive mind (so far as I know, I mean they have been in 40k for over two decades at least..) although I can see what your saying.
Personally I think the Orks, the Eldar, and the Tyranids are all valid adversaries, I don't include Necrons because they are even more mindless than the Tyranids, I mean their whole existence is to snuff out life, at least the Tyranids are working towards evolution. Looking at the Ultramarine history (and I have done this on many occassions) those three offer the most realistic grounds. The Tyranids are, however, the largest threat and the greatest victory the UM have ever had and they still represent a massive chunk of the UM history and culture to date, so it stands to reason that they would be the enemy.
I think that you guys should get your hands on some Tyranid Codexes and read the timeline and the epic battles the UM have had against them, it would make a truly amazing film if they just did the battle for Macragge imo!
