As the name might suggest, I'm considering permitting (forcing) one of my baby Necromancers to carry the Forbidden Rod. If I'm feeling generous I might also give her a pair of oven gloves to hold it with, or maybe the Seed of Rebirth.

What's the general consensus, though?

On the one hand, an extra d6 power dice on that dreaded snake-eyes Winds of Magic roll could really let me put the hurt on the enemy. On the other hand, it's a 2/3 chance of blowing up a Necromancer. But then, on another hand still, Necromancers are cheap... Though not that cheap, including the Rod itself.

Too many hands!

It seems like the sort of thing I might not even use every game, but it might be better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

In the list I have in mind I already have a Dispel Scroll on my Vampire Lord and one other baby Necromancer with the Cursed Book, because the Cursed Book is cool!

The second baby Necromancer will probably be naked if she doesn't get the Rod. And all three casters are Lore of Vampires (L4 VL and two L1 Necromancers).

Forbidden Rod allows regen saves? I just don't remember if it does.

Anyways, it's always fun to blow up a necromancer! No other army justifies this better than VC, haha.

If you have the spare points... yeah, use it! If Regen can save his almost-undead skin, even better!

I'd use it =)

It only says no armor saves. So I would think that there would be regen. And a necro is cheap and if you can sacrifice him for an amazing magic phase then it is worth it.

No armour saves does not prevent ward and regen saves.

If the intention is to prevent those as well, then the description would read "...no saves of any kind..." like our crumbling rules.

I had been thinking about ways to increase the amount of PDs available in a Mannfred list and this really got my interest. I hope to get a game in this Sunday, and if I do I will try this out. :)

If you've got the points, you might as well have the option open if there's nothing else you want to spend it on.

I would only put it on a level 1 though and only use it late game if things were looking fine on the vamp lore casters front

Agreed, Lynks.

I'll be putting the seed of rebirth on the poor soul as well, since he'll be hanging around an Engine. With a 5+ regen he should stand at least a chance of surviving.

And now I bethink myself the Opal Amulet is a better add-on than the Seed of Rebirth.

4++ against the first wound suffered means the Rod has a 50:50 chance to zot the bearer.

50 points in total (Well, 115, counting the baby Necromancer) for +d6 power dice and a 50% chance that a Necromancer dies once per game.

I run a Skink Priest with an Opal Amulet and Forbidden Rod on most of my Lizardmen lists and I rarely regret it. I see no reason why it wouldn't carry over to Vampire Counts.

If your Necromancer does survive, you can use the Lore of Vampires attribute to heal the damage pretty easily.

Won't the opal amulet only stop 1 of the potential 3 wounds from the rod? As I read it the rod doesn't cause a single wound with the multiple wounds (d3) special rule, which could be negated entirely with one ward save. The way I see this is if you roll a 5-6 on the d3 wounds, the necromancer will be toast.

I'd gladly be proven otherwise, though. ;)

You are correct.

However, the combination of Forbidden Rod and Opal Amulet has six equally probable results, three of which result in a dead Necromancer and three of which result in a live one with 1-2 wounds left.

I didn't get a game in today so I couldn't test the rod out, but next weekend is scheduled game night and it'll be coming along then as well. :)

This will even go good in my wait for it..... Vlad list. yes i perfer Vlad over Mannfred but i do take Mannfred as the alcolyte in my list.

i do the same and this has caught my eye too as i do use a mortis hmmm :D

I've heard that there are people out there in the farthest reaches of the world who... blasphemous as it is... play for fun

Vlad in an all-infantry(ish) list... with Isabella sounds not that bad.

They'd move slow for Terrorgheists but... could work. 2 Necros with Death should do the trick.

Vlad can munch any infantry really, and should not die that easy. Plus it's always fun to send Isabella to die so he can pwn everything, haha.

I'll give it a shot! It's been years since I field my Vlad!
