Hey all I am beginning Vampire Counts, and don't have lots of Cash. So I remember people making Unit Fillers, and I made about 4 lol for my Zombie Hordes. Are they Legal to use? or are they just for show?

but its not legal to use a non GW model? how about converted GW models..? for isntance a bretonnian knight turned into a blood knight?

There is no 'legal' requirement to use GW miniatures at all. Restrictions only apply to using non-GW miniatures in certain tournaments and in GW stores, so if you don't intend to play in their stores or enter their tournaments, you can use whatever range or type of mini that you wish.

I have never come across a problem using conversions (and GW encourage this). I have regiments based both on Bretonnian knights and empire ones.

Yea got 4 Fillers almost done! found 2 more big bases, I love my Zombies making units of 40, hope to have 3 units of 40 soon.

2 of Fav.s are Ogre one almost done need more Zombies, and one where they coming from Ground. and some hands are poping out lol.

One little thing that I'm planning to do with my ghouls and zombies is to simply take a 40x40mm base and stick 3 models on it instead of the 4 that would otherwise fit. After 3 such bases I'll have saved enough models for a fourth! :D

It will also make the ghouls and zombies to look less ranked and uniformed, giving them a more shambling hordy feel, heheh.

I want to work on a filler that looks like a stone column with a Dwarf/elf funeral pyre on top of it with what appears to be 3 ghouls climbing the column. The body is going to have glowing yellow/green eyes like its about to join the undead :) What do you think?

Unit fillers are okay However I would ask the TO if you are planning on going to someting such as a GT because even though Unit fillers are allowed at the Alamo GT I got informed to not go to over board on them by the TO...just a heads up.

Ricw If you have questions on ideas for unit fillers I would check /post in the Painting and Modeling advice forum as its not really a rules question...but here is a link...

Unit Fillers

I predominantly use fillers for undead thet I have raised, and they are are on an assortment of base sizes, regimental bases, 40x40 bases and using single bases to fill gaps. I will try to get some pics up in the Painting and Modeling advice forum in the next day or so, if you want to put up a thread (or I will do so once I have the pics)

The main thing with Unit Fillers is whether they detract from the army or not. If all you are doing is sticking down 40mm bases with a Zombie on it in the middle of a Grave Guard unit then it really ruins the army (but different tournaments will react differently).

If you use Unit Fillers to actually add to the army with little dioramas then it makes the army look even better. Things like Rats tearing apart a Zombie, Zombie Ogres or grave stones among Skeletons look fantastic and no one will have an issue with them.

In context at the last UK GT I went to I took my VC which has some 40x40 bases among infantry units. There was no issue with it from the staff, and people really saw it as a improvement to the units not a cash saving measure.

The only thing I would mention is that some people use them stupidly, not putting in much effort, but just putting as little as possible on to try and save cash etc.
Those kind of unit fillers will get you looked down upon by most people. If you are going to do unit fillers then I suggest putting decent effort in.

I personally want some zombie ogres.

I agree.

The moneysaving I understand, but if you want to save money, do it in a creative way. Replacing 4 ghouls for 3 is just lame. However, if you place 3 ghouls on a large base and then add some gravestones or a small tree it looks really cool. Doesn't cost you anything more and at least it gives you something nice to look at. ;)

Bah, I've been busted! Now you've forced me to fix some small scenery to place with my 3-ghouls-on-a-40x40-base fillers! :(

Heheh. :)

Ghehehe! You shall work for those spare ghouls!

(and after that you post some pictures on this forum so I can check if you did your homework (and compliment you on how well you've done it) :P ).

Good use for your sprues that normally get thrown away. You can build some pretty nice scenery for the unit fillers using the sprue plastics. i'm working on one now and I'll post it when I complete it. Don't get in a hurry though work is nuts right now.

Well one I'm working on now is to take a pair of wire cutters and a craft knife to cut a sprue into small "bricks". You can creaste a wall of tower out of bricks then primer/paint it. For the bricks use a red paint mixed with some brown to tone it down and paint the cracks and crevices an off white. THen cut sprues to make a "wooden" top to the tower to mount your character on. I've even made the base out of sprues....

Scroll up to see my project (not quoting it again as joseph got made at me last time..lol)...

I dont care. If it is clear what type of unit it is I really dont see the problem. I can understand why people want to save money on the hobby and I really do not understand the 'silent dislike' of unit fillers... I mean I perfer unit fillers over proxies any day and even if minimalistic can enhance the appearence of a unit extensively.
I mean I could remark on certain colours or whatnot but I keep such aesthetic opinions to myself(unless asked for of course), they are no more valid than my opponents.

Creative = good and less is sometimes more.

Just my 2 brains.

I think they can be entirely appropriate. Why not have a ghoul raiding a graveyard in the middle of your unit, or a sarcauphagus?

Make it pretty and thematic and you shouldn't be troubled.

Of course, a corpse cart works as well!
