Here are the rules:

short of it: 1800 sdk, 4 heroes max (monster heroes count for two), 2 hero wizards, 2 monsters total (monster heroes count for one), minimum 7 different units, no formations.

On top of that is allowd a 750 point summoning pool (max 1 summon per turn, no heroes in the pool, max 1 monster in the pool, summoned units that are killed can be summoned again). I'm not sure if summon pool monster counts towards the limit of 2 monsters per army, but for the moment I'm assuming that they DO count.

Haven't looked at the scenarios yet, but here's my tentative thoughts:

Main list:
* Wight King with Black Axe (commander)
* Arkhan the Black
* Necromancer

* 1 Morghast Archai
* 14 Grave Guard (shields, full command)
* 30 Skeletons (spears, full command)
* Mortis Engine

* Necrosphynx w/ venom-spiked tail

Summoning pool:
* 2 Morghast Harbingers
* 6 Spirit Hosts
* 20 Skeleton Archers with command

Some options: I can drop the necrosphinx, summoned archai, and summoned archers to fit a terrorgheist in the summoning pool. Is a re-summonable terrorgheist worth more or less than a necrosphynx to Arkhan? I'm not sure, nor am I sure just what I'd include in the main list to fill the points vacated by the sphynx, other than putting the morghasts and archers in there.

Alternate core list (would require me to purchase a corpse cart):

Any suggestions welcome. In terms of stuff I have to work with:

I have no coven throne, no zombie dragon, no abyssal terror, no mortarch mannfred, no neferata, no corpse carts, no black coach, no vargheists, no varghulf, no bat swarms, no mounted wight king, and no blood knights. Anything else from the vamp counts compendium / grand alliance death book is fair game.

On the tomb kings side, I have access to the necrosphinx & skeletal archers already mentioned, plus the four generic heroes on foot and a casket of souls, nothing else.

I can probably make a single purchase of us$50 or less, provided my tax return arrives in time.

I pretty much have to have the list locked down by the end of Saturday, as I'm going to have approximately two weeks to paint basically everything.

Not sure how Arkhan holds up in close combat, I've always figured him to be mainly caster/summoner.

Do you think you'll have all the beef needed to deal with most of your enemies with your current selection?

Offensively, the primary list has:

Necrosphynx, re-summonable harbinger missiles, and a combined arms deathrattle block consisting of a large spearleton horde bubble wrapped by a smaller grave guard screen, with the wight king's command ability and up to two casts of danse macabre to support them. It's also got one large (or two small) re-summonable spirit host blobs to wall a flank, with arkhan and his single archai bodyguard able to add a bit of weight to a combat once more threatening enemies are tied up.

The alternative list has:

Resummonable terrorgheist, a pair of archai, and a similar deathrattle formation, but with more grave guard, plus the re-summonable spirit hosts.

At the moment, I'm leaning toward the former list, since the terrorgheist banks a bit too hard on targeting low bravery enemy units, and I've already got the mortis engine to hassle them.

I'll be asking the event organizer this weekend whether the 1/summoning pool monster counts towards the 2 monsters per army limit. At the moment I'm assuming it does, but if it doesn't then I'll be re-arranging to include both the deployed necrosphinx and the summoned gheist.

New Version:

Main List
- Arkhan the Black
- Wight King with Black Axe (commander)
- Necromancer
- 1 Morghast Archai
- 10 Black Knights with full command
- 20 Grave Guard with shields and full command
- 30 Skeleton Warriors with spears and full command
- Mortis Engine
Total: 1793 out of 1800 SDK

Summoning Pool
- 6 Spirit Hosts
- 3 Bat Swarms
- Terrorgheist
Total: 748 out of 750 SDK

May not be as strong as before, I don't know, but it has a couple advantages on the prior versions:

- Only uses units from the Grand Alliance: Death book, so I'll be operating out of a single source for my army rules.

- The main list looks more like an army, what with the 50 infantry and 10 cavalry. These are the first models I'll have painted for my undead since I sold off my old army a year or so ago, so it would be nice to have something that feels like an actual army finished when I'm done.

- I'll only have to buy the bat swarms, which will save me money compared to the corpse cart I would have had to buy for the old alternate list (the store lets us play whatever models, so i can get the cheap reaper bones swarms - not ideal models, but then again neither are GW's for this unit).

The primary downside is that I have to paint my Terrorgheist, which I expect to be a much harder process than painting the necrosphynx would have been, since I have already glued it to its large rectangular base, so reaching all of its nooks and crannies to paint it will be a major pain. Partly for that reason, I'm considering re-basing it, but I put a fair bit of work into making a place on the base that my ghoul king can stand, so... I don't know.

I can worry about that later, though, as I've got a lot of other stuff to paint first.
