hello All,

I've just started a VC army, I'm a 40k player so charging being part of movement is weird for me!

Currently I'm in the process of building and painting 60 zombies, 40 Skeletons and a Necro.... Where should I go from there, I will be playing against Every other army.... Help would be appreciated! I've read through the forums and there are great bits of information about!

Cheers Alfie

Don't ever forget to have your opponent take a fear test. May seem minor but from hitting you on 3's to 5's makes more livable troops. Read through the excellent guides by Najo and Sunny, they took the time to go over every unit. Even if you don't agree with their findings due to your play-style, still worth browsing

Yeah those guides sum a lot up. Not just for "beginners" either, but I've used VC for nearly two years now and I never thought about the pros and cons of letting your unit being charged so that the next turn you'll be able to have the magic phase to raise more back. So, yeah, some pure gold in there.

Yeah, my friend still doesn't understand my tactic of actually wanting to be charged
I think I forget fear about 50-60% of the time, its really annoying, but then I also forget killing blow on my grave guards all the time, it's all about practice I guess.
Get a vampire model, I have about 6 now mainly because I get them cheap on ebay, picked up an isabella yesterday for £2 from my local store, you need a vamp to make a blender regardless.
Next buy will be some kind of hammer, so grave guard or black knights, we had a discussion here about buying 2 BKs and some spare horses. That will give you a good lot of hammers. Personally I'm going to buy 1 box and a box of TK skele cavalry and proxy 5 BKs.
Hexwraiths and vargheists are also good hammers.
Grave guards are expensive to buy, especially when you need at least 2 boxes but are an auto include in footslogger armies for me.
Altho you have skeletons, you need a proper anvil, so crypt horrors (4 minimum) should be high on your list :)
These are kind of the building blocks for a starter army, once you have that you can start getting all the fancy stuff, some might argue a terrorgheist should be high on your list, I've not got the cash for it myself.
Edit: Oh and you cant go wrong with direwolves and spirit hosts as redirectors!

Thanks for the reply draykorinee , I was thinking of a big block of grave guard with black Knights as support, I've actually got a terrorgheist which was one of the first models bought, will 4 crypt horrors be enough? I would imagine they would be a high priority target? So would the terrorgheist?

4 crypt horros are fine for small games sub 1500 but once you start going over that you're going to want more. They aren't normally a high priority target particularly if you are sending a TG and a black knight bus at them :P The TG will be number one priority for nearly every player to the point where people leave them out if they're facing a decent gunline.

Great stuff!

So in fantasy movement wins the game, what would be the best way of deploying the army? I will be have my first game against Empire, so most likely a gun line..

Skeletons and Zombies don't want to be in horde mode, too much difficulty maneuvering them and they take more hits. Sometimes grave guards with GW in horde mode is quite good. Otherwise just stick everything up front and try to use terrain to your advantage.

Thanks for the kinds words guys! It's cool that you use our guide so much! Find it in my sig btw. We'll soon make a great expansion to it.

Regarding what to buy next you won't regret buying the following:

8 Crypt Horrors (convert Zombie Ogres if on a budget :D )
6 Vargheists
X Morghasts (Archai are the better choice most of the time)

I'm trying out my hexwraiths (some proxy boar models painted ghostly wooo) next weekend, if they don't work for me I'm getting hold of some vargheists for sure, if not I'll pick up some hexes.

Thanks Sun, I've actually been following your guide, out of it so far I've bought 8 Crypt horrors , currently built ready to paint, Spirit host? Yes or No? Can you take Morghasts/ Archai in a normal VC list?

Cheap price wise, great models, cheap points wise and versatile, you can't go wrong with spirit hosts. I personally find them lacking against dwarfs who are my main opponent, but I hear great things about them holding up things far more expensive than them, I shall be facing an ogre army soon and shall take a couple along.

I've always had good luck with the spirit hosts. No frenzy to control, move through most things and then you add how much can't even hurt them. They are even cheap enough if they get focused and die I just shrug because that means something else didn't get hit

Awesome! There's some great members on this page! I will look into using Spirit host, anyone know if the Morghasts/Archai can be taken in a normal VC list?

Harbingers/Archai can be included in a Vampire Counts army or an Undead Legions Army. Their points count toward your Special/Rare allowance.

Sorry to bombard everyone... But to use the Morghasts/Archai I will need to get their rules etc. from the end times book, is there a pdf floating around that any knows of?
