Hey folks,

I picked up a varghulf at the weekend, and its the first big metal miniature I have bought. I was just wondering when I am putting it together, do I need to pin the wings or should loads of glue and green stuff do the trick ?

Cheers
Buck

Good question,

While I personally hate pinning, it's best to do it. Believe me, I've pulled off some great gluing in my time, betting my life that it would work. Sure enough, while playing, the model tipped over and off came the wings.

It's a pain in the butt to have to repaint and put together, plus you get a sick feeling when you see the mini burst like that.

Be safe and pin!!

Good answer !

I have just discovered an amazing new FLGS about 15 minutes away from where I work, and they have a lovely little pinning kit.... its a good excuse to go and pick it up, and I am sure a few other "essential" bits and pieces while I am there

When pinning I'd recommend wearing plastic glasses, the sort you'd wear in a Chemistry class, incase the drill or pin snaps and heads towards your eyes (this has happened to me more than one).

Always pin metal minis. I used to be of the glue and green stuff camp but after my old minis had some breakages I started pinning and so far so good. I always use green stuff in combination with pinning and I swear you could play soccer with a mini after that (if you don't mind the paint coming off and it becoming all crooked and bent).

Lord Reginer, do you have any recommendations or links for powered drills that you value? I've been looking into them but I haven't really had much experience with powered tools and don't know where to start. Is there a powered hobby drill sort of thing that you use or do you use a more standard power drill?

I was using a standard smaller cordless drill with a very small bit. I also have a Dremel. That's it for "power tools" as far as minis are concerned. Something better then a normal drill would be nice, since my drill is basically crap now (wont hold a charge)

My drill is also in the "crap won't hold charge," but it slows down the speed of the drill which is ok by me. I also have a varghulf sitting in its box waiting for the pinning to happen. I've managed to avoid pinning for the most part, but I know this guy is going to need it.

I use a Minicraft hobby drill, not cordless so you need to keep the wire out of the way, but I've had it since I was 13 (that's... 13 years!) and it's never had a fault. Never need to replace old batteries when they can't hold charge either. Other makes (e.g. Dremel) have variable speed, but that's not something I've ever missed.

A down side to mine if that it has a twist chuck (the part that holds the bit in place, for those unfamiliar with drills), I'd recommend a key chuck instead of a hand-twist.

I'd also re-iterate the safety goggles/glasses necessity, as otherwise something *will* go in your eye.

How's the varghulf coming along?

So this is how everybody pins stuff! power tools and i'm sitting here with a pin vice wondering how anybody has every pinned anything (I always give up and just glue it) if it keeps breaking I usually pull out the epoxy resin then it won't break again!

I don't actually use my electric drill for pinning since small parts are too fiddly for that sort of thing. I would highly recommend you get some hardened steel (HSS) bits as they go through white metal far more easily than the normal stainless steel bits you get with the GW set.
