I have been using him recently as a chariot hunter against Tombkings. he is as fast as their chariots and unless they have flaming banner or a rank he will normally survive the impact hits if he fails to charge.

I just recently started to play with 2 varghulfs, and I love them. Yea they have a hard time for a turn or 2 vs dwarves but atleast they are the ones drawing fire and not your other stuff 
It also takes a lot to bring them both down, especially when you use fences and crypt horrors to give them some cannon protection. And if you happen to face a lot of flaming warmashines bring a baby vamp on hellsteed with 2+ ward v fire to cover one of them and hunt warmachines with.
They hit really hard and are only 175pts each, and they come out of the rare section, and not the really crowded special section. They can march without the general and they don't suffer from frenzy. Also they don't die to a sneeze like the vargheists do. I got models for both and I've started to give the vargheists some serious time off.
