Wolfenburg
Autumn 2017
Autumn 2017
Peter strode towards the command tent and smiled faintly at the five armoured figures standing guard outside it, they had swords of almost six foot leaning against their shoulders and all wore identical black plate armour, a twisted version of the Greatswords who protected the mortal Counts of the Empire.
All five were also Blood Dragons and they smiled at Peter in welcome before silently stepping aside so he could enter.
Peter stepped into the command tent and swiftly took in the scene.
Simon sat in the corner, arms folded, looking uncharacteristically sombre with a frown of worry creasing his forehead.
Damek sat next to him, slouched limply to the side, for the past few months he hadn’t even been attempting to hide his exhaustion and Peter wondered for just how much longer he could keep up his spellcasting.
Three figures stood in around a map table in the centre of the tent.
General Faulsing was arguing angrily with the black armoured man across from him, stabbing a finger at the map furiously.
”We won at Ostermark and we can win here! I’ve held this siege for two years and I will not give up now!”
The black armoured man shook his head and glanced back, his grim features relaxing slightly as he saw the other blood dragon.
”Peter.” he said in welcome.
Peter smiled in return.
”Dieter.”
Dieter Schwartz was of the same bloodline as Peter like the rest of Vlad’s Greatswords but he was also their founder and Captain.
It had caused quite a fuss when he had shown up with five other members of the Count’s twenty strong guard.
Despite the current circumstances Peter couldn’t help but smile at how well polished Dieter’s black armour was and how the silver wolf-head emblem on his breast shone.
Dieter ran his hand through his hair as he turned back to face Meyerling.
”Faulsing, you cannot win here. Look at your men!” he shouted stabbing a finger at Simon and Damek.
”They’re exhausted and we’re the undead! The supposedly tireless! How much longer can they keep focus in combat before making a slip and more importantly how much longer can Damek last before arcane exhaustion takes him! Even I know that magic tires even our kind out!”
Meyerling glanced over at his right hand mage, uncertainty entering his gaze for the first time in Peter’s memory.
”He’s right.” murmured the third figure next to the map.
Peter glanced at Akarin and saw he was wearing a sad smile.
”Pulling back makes sense, you’re the best tactician in the family after the Count, you know this.” he continued. ”It’s not as if the two years have been a waste, we’ve struck fear into the human’s heart and terrorised their capital for all that time. We tried and failed to defeat them, even I failed in opening the city gates before reinforcements arrived. Now with those reinforcements we can’t hope to stand against the might of the Elector Count.”
Before Meyerling could respond one of Dieter’s Greatswords stepped into the tent.
”Captain.” he said striding over to Dieter. ”Knights, perhaps two dozen have broken through our lines and are riding right on us and this force doesn’t have a true Mounted division only Black Knights.”
”Barely any at that.” Damek inserted as he pushed himself to his feet. ”We’ve only a dozen or so left, most were destroyed in the last attempt to break the enemy line.”
Dieter lifted his massive blade of the map table and glanced at Meyerling.
The von Carstein nodded in return and gestured for Damek to follow.
Within moments all the vampire’s stood outside the tent.
The Knights where in sight and Peter saw the Greatsword had been right, there was at least thirty of them.
”Faulsing begin an orderly retreat, if they can risk this many men on a suicide run at us then clearly they are reinforced more strongly than we thought.”
Meyerling frowned.
”It makes no...” he trailed off and nodded slightly. ”It is time to leave, I shall recall my troops.”
Damek stepped forward and pointed at the Knights.
”I’ll thin out their numbers.” he smirked and began an incantation, he was only a few syllables in when an arrow thumped into his neck.
The sorcerer was thrown from his feet and crashed into the ground rendered unconscious.
Simon was moving to Damek’s side before the other vampire had even hit the ground.
”Silver tipped and god’s know what else!” spat the blonde vampire as he removed the arrow.
Peter moved forward as Faulsing stumbled slightly.
”Meyerling?” he asked with concern.
The General straightened.
”It’s...nothing. Just the burden of controlling the entire army all at once when Damek lost consciousness.”
Dieter was staring in shock at the Knights who had wheeled around to strike out at a few fleeing mortal necromancer’s.
”Knights with bows?” he asked with confusion.
”Dishonourable bastards!” Peter spat.
Faulsing frowned glancing at the wound in Damek’s neck then back at where he had stood when struck.
Realisation dawned over his expression.
”Move!” he cried.
The vampires where a blur as they all move with supernatural speed away from their current location moments before dozens of arrows smashed through the air.
Simon stopped; he held the immobile form of Damek over his shoulder.
”What the hells?”
Meyerling pointed at the treeline to the right and snarled.
”Archers!”.
Even as he pointed the dozen remaining Black Knights under his command charged straight at the location he was glaring towards.
A few screams emitted from the trees before silence returned.
Dieter meanwhile was jogging away with his Greatswords.
”A retreat now! I’ll hold back the Knights!” the Captain shouted.
Peter glanced at Meyerling who nodded slightly.
”I’ll have to abandon the lesser dead to hold back the Empire main force but I can evacuate the mortals, artillery and Great dead such as Wights. Go assist Vlad’s Guard. I will send a signal when we’re leaving.”
*******
Peter nodded and ran off, unsheathing the sword at his waist.
He stumbled to a stop a few moments later as he saw a lance-weilding Knight ride straight towards Dieter.
”Dieter! Watch out!” he cried.
The Greatsword Captain stood still, his sword resting against his shoulder as he watched the Knight ride at him.
When the Knight was a mere few feet away the vampire exploded into action, in a blur he moved to the side away from the lance and with once slash he removed the horse’s head.
The Knight flew of his now dead mount and smashed into the ground, landing roughly on his back.
Dieter watched as the mortal scrambled to his feet.
”Come blue-blood.” he sneered at the Knight. ”Show me your steel.”
The human left out a cry and tore his sword from its scabbard, slashing out with a ferocious cut.
Dietier parried the blade with ease and drove the tip of his sword into the Knight’s chest.
”I always said it was only the Empire’s infantry that knew how to fight.” he mocked the dying man.
*******
Dieter looked down at the dead body, half-buried disgust at the noble warrior-caste rising up but he pushed the thoughts down. They belonged to a long dead man.
Turning he saw Peter staring at him in shock and he smiled, the other blood dragon never got used to how quick he or his men could wield the large two-handed swords they used.
”Going to just watch or do you want to actually help?” he asked as Peter strode up to him.
”Well...” Peter started before flashing his sword out at Dieter’s head, the other vampire ducked swiftly before hearing a gurgling noise behind him.
Straightening he turned and saw a Knight pierced by Peter’s sword.
”Ah...” the Greatsword said glancing with annoyance at Peter. ”I knew he was there.”
”Sure you did captain.” the Blood Knight replied pleasantly.
Dieter rolled his eyes and gestured to where his five men where battling the still surviving Knights.
”Coming? I know it might be hard to keep up without a horse, I know you Knights don’t like walking or having to get dirty.” Dieter asked casually in a way that came with practice.
Peter replied swiftly, his face as composed as the other vampire’s.
”Of course, can’t have you dirty peasants messing it up.”
Dieter chuckled and both Blood Dragons set off towards the mortal Knights.
*******
Peter wiped the blood of his sword as the last mortal knight gasped out his final breath.
He glanced at the other Greatswords; Dieter was right about one thing, fighting with them was nothing like with his other Blood Dragon brethren.
With the Blood Knight’s it was about the first charge, the joy of combat and the honour of defeating your foe.
And whilst he knew Dieter enjoyed a good duel as much as anyone the unity with which the Greatswords fought was far different than that of the Knight Order that had trained Peter.
The Greatswords where more about efficiency and swiftly killing their foes, rather than trying to achieve personal glory.
It was easy to tell all of them had done this as mortals and had rose up the commoner ranks.
Peter noticed Dieter was looking at him strangely.
”Sorry, did you say something?” Peter asked.
Dieter nodded and gestured over towards the von Carstein front lines.
”Most of the Skeletons are destroyed, it’s only meagre zombies keeping the humans back by weight but they’re break through soon. Should we join Meyerling?”
Peter nodded and strode off with the six other vampires back towards their von Carstein masters.
Wolfenburg 2017, a day that would go down in infamy within the von Carstein family, a day that the many of the more political Sylvanian vampires would use to point out the mistake of giving command of an army to a series of third generation officers.
Fritz would call it the most amusing venture of the war.
Konrad was said to have sneered and pointed it out as an example of third generation thin-bloodedness.
However many others had the opposite opinion.
The Baron Karl would call it a show of tactical brilliance that so few had in fact caused an entire province to grind to a halt for two entire years whilst besieging the Capital and had managed to escape with the most valuable parts of their army from a sizeable amount of Imperial reinforcements.
Vlad had publically applauded the efforts of the third army’s General and his lieutenants as well as using the Knight Peter under Faulsing’s command as an example of how other Bloodlines could work alongside the von Carsteins so well.

//The third part of the von Carstein tales. A few years (well more than a few) into the First Vampire War. Been writing this lately at night and early morning due to sleeping problems.
Anyway took me a few attempts to do this, originally had Dieter as a Blood Knight but decided I wanted something different.
Anyway hope peoples enjoy it somewhat.//
