In regards to the demis, I'm not sure why he doesn't have musicians in them, You only lose the standard if they break from combat.

I am not an expert on demigryphs (or anything for that matter
) but he could also add in a magic standard bearer..with NO champion. The champ is the last to die, so if you have a std bearer without a champ, the banner bearer becomes the last to die. This means you maintain the banner's ability for as long as possible. A magic banner may be worth adding, at least to one unit. Flaming banner perhaps?
Just some food for thought.
+1 attack and the ability to challenge, may make adding full command or a champion better. I don't know.
